New Book of Poems Issued And "Strick" Apologizes For Work.

THE MOTTO IS RESTORED.

Local numismatists and bank em-

j ployes are a unit in rejoicing over the

new $2.50 and $5.00 gold coins, a small

' consignment of which have been re

ceived by the banks of this city fresh

from the mints at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. The purpose of the new coins is to restore the motto "In God We Trust," and to make it possible for the coins to be stacked with convenience. Both purposes have been accomplished. The design of the coin minted about two years ago, which raised such a hue and cry, has been abandoned entirely. The eagle, whose- heavily feathered legs resembled trousers, has been modified and drawn true to life. The Indian head has also come in for improvement and has been made to resemble a real Indian. All designs instead of being in relief are sunk into the coin like a cameo. The effect Is much more artistic and will render the coin more durable. On the eagle side of the coin in a semi-circle at the top are the words "United States of America, while under the feet of the eagle Is the date of the mintage. Above one wing are the

words "E Pluribus Unum," and above the other, higher up, "In God We Trust." On the opposite side is a carefully modeled Indian head surrounded by twelve stars and the denomination of the coin's value. The edges of the $2.50 and the $5.00 denomination coins are milled with the usual straight line, while the $10.00 coins have stars around the edge. The new coins are not yet In general circulation in this city, the supply at the present time being limited.

HOMES DESIRED FOR CHILDREN. "The agents of the Board of State Charities have in the past year been very successful in securing a large number of good homes for dependent children who are public wards. There are still a large number of desirable children available for placing in suitable homes. Doubtless there are many families that would make a home for a child. An important part of the Board's work is to bring the homeless

child and the childless home together.

The Board solicits the co-operation of

all who are interested in securing

propej- homes in families for child ren." For further information ad dress the Board of State Charities,

"Including Finnigin," is the title of

a book of verse from the pen of Strickland W. Gillilan, formerly city

editor of the Palladium and now one of the best known humorists in the

country. Although Mr. Gillilan has been for

several years writing for the leading

periodicals and newspapers in the United States this is his first effort in issuing any of his works in book form. As usual Mr. Gillilan does not take this splendid literary contribution of his seriously. He asks the pardon of the great American public for his "persumption" and offers a laughable excuse for his "temerity." Why he should feel called upon to apologize

for issuing such a book will cause his many local friends to wonder when they read it.

"King David, who used to do plain psalming for a recreation." says the famous Richmond poet-humorist,

"once had it in for a friend of his.

and wondered how he would get even. Then a thought came to David, and he gritted his teeth and said he wished his enemy might write a book. That would fix him.

"At least I have gratified a choice

collection of enemies by writing a book; or rather by compiling one I

had written by fits and starts for years and years. This bit of gratification to my foes is called 'Including Finnigin,' and has seventy-eight other of my versifications, funny and otherwise." "At first I handed my collection of some thousands of verses to a friend, with the request that he eliminate the worst from them. After several weeks honest toil Mi said he couldn't do it; that he had found, ever once in awhile, one he thought was worst, but always found, afterward, a worse one. "So I had to do it myself. The result is bound (to succeed) in two colors, both of which are green. It is really a beautiful book. I had no hand in that part of it." The first poem in the book is "Finnigin to Flannigin," the most famous bit of dfalect ever written, and which was composed while Mr. Gillilan was wearing out lead pencils at the Palladium office in response to the office boy's continual howl for "copy." The book Is from the press of Pearson Brothers, Philadelphia, Pa.
