Billiard Players of Richmond Fight for City Championship.

HANDICAPS ARE ARRANGED.

The city handicap billiard championship tourneruent U now on at the Simmons Brothers pool and billiard hall. Eight of the best known players in the city are entered in this match and general Interest in its result is being taken by the followers of the cue. Thursday afternoon the first match was played between Braffett and Burr, the former, .winning after Burr had led him nearly the entire distance. Thursday evening R, Poundstone defea':d Roberts and last evening Bacon took Twigg Into camp by playing a brilliant steady game. The following is a list of the players with their handicaps: Braffett 150, Bacon 110, Suters 125, Hibberd 110, Roberts 95, Burr 85, R. Poundstone 80. Twigg 75. These handicaps, for the benefit of the uninitated, . mean, for instance: When Braffett and Twigg play Braffett must run 150 points while Twigg is running 75. Last year Hibberd won the city championship from Braffett.

Charlson Will Pull Off Double Header on ( Monday, November 30.

Promoter Charlson writes that the next wrestling match In Richmond will be pulled off on Monday, .November ::0. "I am arranging a double header that will outshine all other matches ever held before in Richmond," he ays. Charlson does not state who the principals in this match will be. Olson will probably be matched Against the former wrestling partner of Hackenschmldt, who was defeated by Gotch for the world's championship. This mat artist weighs .210 pounds 30 pounds more than Olson and is said to be a wonder. The principals of the other "match will probably be announced next week. Thursday night at Anderson, the Turk defeated Young Beel, after losing the first fall of the matc'i. . Olson challenged the winner but . the Turk refuses to take him on.

QUAKER PLAYERS NOHRACTICING Gymnasium Is Undergoing Repairs.

All basket ball practice at Earlham has been declared off for the next several days, as the gymnasium Is undergoing repairs, a new steam heating plant being Installed. The new system is being put in as rapidly as possible, and it is expected that practice will be resumed by the latter part of next week. During the meantime, Coach Vail is working among the students, .stirring up enthusiasm.

"Jane Eyre" Gennett. Something different in the way of a comedy-drama production will appear here at the Gennett theatre when "Jane Eyre" makes her first bow this afternoon and tonight. This is a clean-cut comedy in the broader sense with a dramatic story threaded through so intense in its telling that it compels attention. There is not a dull moment or incident from the rise of the first curtain. Every reader of good literature has read Charlotte Brontes great work (Jane Eyre) and after its lirtit production in Chicago, so great was the demand for tho book that the publishers were compelled to put out several new editions. "A Message From Mars." Gennett. "All the world loves a lover." In "A Message From Mars." which will again be seen here at the Gennett theater, matinee and night, Nov. 24, there are a pair of lovers that rivet the attention of audiences from the time the story of the play begins until it ends and of course it ends happily. True love does not seem to run smoothly anywhere and as shown in this play its smoothness is disturbed by that most abominable of crimes, selfishness. . That girl throws her sweetheart overboard because he is selfish. When he reformes she takes him , back, but in bringing about the reformation is the interesting part of the play. It is heroically done by a messenger from the planet Mars.

Not Up to Date and Fails to Illumine an Old Theme Utilized In "Pudd'nhead Wilson" and by Campbell and Boucicault. j From Our New York Dramatlo Correspondent. "The Great Question," at the Majestic theater, will not advance to any appreciable extent the claim of Its author to fame as a playwright Thla new drama by Frederick Paulding, In which Jessie Bonstelle stars, is old fashioned and crude. Long ago Bartley Campbell and Dion Boucicault succeeded in extracting melodramatic possibilities from the "white slave" question, and only a few years ago in Mark Twain's "Pudd'nhead Wilson," dramatized by Frank Mayo, the results of miscegenation figured more or less conspicuously in the plot. Mr. Paulding has nothing to say on the subject that can be of Interest at the present time, nor does his play take on any added importance because the time of action is set down as "during the Cleveland administration."

It never seems to occur to the learned legal gentleman assuming, of course, that legal learning is essential to his retention of the seat on the . highest tribunal in the land that let-' ters written by the woman to the man in a case of this kind would not be regarded necessarily as infallible testitnon.v in a court of law. When the justice is on the point of yielding to his enemies the daughter learns of her origin and refuses to allow him to sacrifice his honor. She is willing to face the Inevitable disgrace. j Her unbappiness Is further accentuated by the fact that she will now be unable to marry the man she loves for fear of passing the taint on to future generations. The young man In question, however, although he has previously been emphatic in bis expressed aversion to such relationships, now argues the holiness and strength of their mutual passion, but Is finally nent away, though tearfully exclaiming at the last that he will continue to wait and hope. j Miss Jessie Bonstelle, who comes forward in the chief feminine character, is a proficient 6tock actress whose effort commands respect, though the role

of the heroine is not entirely adapted to her.

SENTENCE COMMUTED. Preble County Burglar Gets Off Easier. Eldorado, O., Nov. 21. Fred Ellis, who was sentenced to the penitentiary from Preble county, for ten years, for burglarizing an uninhabited dwelling, has had his sentence commuted to six years "by Governor Harris.

In the last ten years over $20,000,000 has been spent by the Wesleyan Methodist church of England on churches and halls for religious work.
