"Jane Eyre" Gennett. Something different in the way of a comedy-drama production will appear here at the Gennett theatre when "Jane Eyre" makes her first bow this afternoon and tonight. This is a clean-cut comedy in the broader sense with a dramatic story threaded through so intense in its telling that it compels attention. There is not a dull moment or incident from the rise of the first curtain. Every reader of good literature has read Charlotte Brontes great work (Jane Eyre) and after its lirtit production in Chicago, so great was the demand for tho book that the publishers were compelled to put out several new editions. "A Message From Mars." Gennett. "All the world loves a lover." In "A Message From Mars." which will again be seen here at the Gennett theater, matinee and night, Nov. 24, there are a pair of lovers that rivet the attention of audiences from the time the story of the play begins until it ends and of course it ends happily. True love does not seem to run smoothly anywhere and as shown in this play its smoothness is disturbed by that most abominable of crimes, selfishness. . That girl throws her sweetheart overboard because he is selfish. When he reformes she takes him , back, but in bringing about the reformation is the interesting part of the play. It is heroically done by a messenger from the planet Mars.
VaudevilleNew Phillips. Swans alligators, the sensation of the vaudeville circuit will be headlines at the New Phillips the coming week. The act Introduces Bert Swan, England's champion deep sea diver and aquatic champion. Feats of unheard of novelty will be seen In the performance. The alligators, carefully trained show much intelligence.

One of them is a wrestler and Mr. Swan has a fierce contest with him in the water. Nancy Lee Rice, the dancing harpist, is another novelty that will be featured. This graceful girl beside being a creditable dancer is a skilled musician on the harp, and combines
the two in a most happy effect. Her act is much as would have been the dancing of one of the ancient girls of. the Jewish courts. Nich and Lida Russel, in "The Professors Substitute" have a good

Affairs of the Sporting World
One of our local contemporaries is now publishing a series of obituary notices of the members of the late la
mented Earlham football team. Later
they will be published in bulk by the Undertakers' Fireside Companion. Thursday at Havana, Cuba, the Cincinnati Reds, with Spade pitching, were defeated 2 to 1, by the All-Cuban team. It is impossible for an American to pronounce the names of the Cuban battery, so they are withheld. Nelson and O'Brien, both of whom have heard the "we're full" gag from big hotels, are going to star next spring in a revival of "Under Two Flags." Dode Criss, the volunteer organist of McAleer's choir, demands more kopecks in his 1909 contract. Dode saved all of his press notices and has the proof to show that he is the goods. Carnegie Tech announces that it will engage a coach of national reputation, have a great football eleven and play
Harvard. Penn, Yale and Princeton next year. It is said that it has offered $25,000 and the professor of zoology for Center Rush Marks and Halfback Means, of the Penn team, but Coach Metzger says nay. Rudolph Unholz, the Boer comedian, who is a champion scrapper from the feet down, has sailed for Australia, where the cables carry little about boxing events In America. Horse race owners not only have been chased out of New York, but Europe, their expected haven, has also
j run up a big flag on them. The only
thing left for them to do is to establish a circuit In the Orance Free State, the home of personal liberty. James R. Keene, will contribute a $50,000 event at the Los Angeles race meet. It will be known as the Governor Hughes stakes. Hurl a piece of cheese at any bread line and see how many bookmakers you strike.

JESSIE B0NSTELLE AS STAR.
Col. Ellery, of the Ellery Band, has probably been tne recipient of more compliments regarding his band than any manager thai ever toured in America. He says that he particularly appreciates the words of praise that come from the very old and the very young. On the occasion of the first) appearance of the Ellery Band in New York City at the Hippodrome last year, an old man with snow white hair. Issuing from the concert with his children and grandchildren, was overheard to exclaim with the tears in his eyes: "That was Heavenly Music at Mortal Hands." The uplift in the Ellery music is something that must be experienced In order to be fully realized. Music-lovers who once hear a concert by this band, cannot remain away from the subtle atmosphere of Its Intimate charm. Ellery appears at the Coliseum tonight-
disclose to the receiver and the creditors how many have been taken up by Van Vlissingen, who is now a convict in the broom shop in the Joliet penitentiary. Since the confession of guilt, which startled the business world and pre
ceded his sentence, by only a few hours, Van Vlissingen has repeatedly asserted that $7fO,O0O' would cover the j forged paper which he disposed of to! clients who believed that they were In-'
vesting money In securities which were beyond question.
New Drama by Frederick Paulding le
Not Up to Date and Fails to Illumine an Old Theme Utilized In "Pudd'nhead Wilson" and by Campbell and Boucicault. j From Our New York Dramatlo Correspondent. "The Great Question," at the Majestic theater, will not advance to any appreciable extent the claim of Its author to fame as a playwright Thla new drama by Frederick Paulding, In which Jessie Bonstelle stars, is old fashioned and crude. Long ago Bartley Campbell and Dion Boucicault succeeded in extracting melodramatic possibilities from the "white slave" question, and only a few years ago in Mark Twain's "Pudd'nhead Wilson," dramatized by Frank Mayo, the results of miscegenation figured more or less conspicuously in the plot. Mr. Paulding has nothing to say on the subject that can be of Interest at the present time, nor does his play take on any added importance because the time of action is set down as "during the Cleveland administration."

the Justice's oldest dhugntet. This emotional old scoundrel, who leaks sentimental bathos when he is not bleating for revenge, falls in with the Justice's enemy, a supposdly shrewd lawyer. He agrees for a con
sideration of several thousands of dol
lars to deliver into the lawyer's hands certain letters written to the justice by the "slave" years before. These prove the Justice to have been her lover.
It never seems to occur to the learned legal gentleman assuming, of course, that legal learning is essential to his retention of the seat on the . highest tribunal in the land that let-' ters written by the woman to the man in a case of this kind would not be regarded necessarily as infallible testitnon.v in a court of law. When the justice is on the point of yielding to his enemies the daughter learns of her origin and refuses to allow him to sacrifice his honor. She is willing to face the Inevitable disgrace. j Her unbappiness Is further accentuated by the fact that she will now be unable to marry the man she loves for fear of passing the taint on to future generations. The young man In question, however, although he has previously been emphatic in bis expressed aversion to such relationships, now argues the holiness and strength of their mutual passion, but Is finally nent away, though tearfully exclaiming at the last that he will continue to wait and hope. j Miss Jessie Bonstelle, who comes forward in the chief feminine character, is a proficient 6tock actress whose effort commands respect, though the role
of the heroine is not entirely adapted to her.

Billie Burke, who after living ten years in London got so that she liked it tremendously, has In less than two years of reacquaintance with her native land decided that she will make her home on this side .of the water hereafter. It will make no difference to her whether she plays in this country or in London and Paris, her home from this time on will be in America. She has become one of the great favorites of the American public, and It is safe to predict that the affection between her and theater goers will grow with the coming years.
