HISGEH PREDICTS - FIGHTING PARTY
Thinks Independence Party Will Be Factor in the Next Election.
PLEASED WITH RETURNS.
CANDIDATE 8AY8 THAT STANDARD OIL STOOD MORE CLOSER TO DEMOCRATS THAN TO REPUBLICAN NOMINEE. Springfield, Mass., Nov. 5.- Thomas ti. Hlsgen, Independence party candidate for the presidency, issued the following statement frim his home In West Springfield: lowing statement from his home In large Tote In my home town. Returns from the country at large as yet are bo Incomplete that it is impossible for us to know Just how many votes .the pew party polled. The growth of sentiment toward a new party is necessarily slow. Because of our lack of political organization throughout the nation, and also because of our lack of funds, we were unable to reach any large proportion of the voters in this one campaign. Practically without a campaign we have made surprising gains in Vermont, New Hampshire and other states, and in viW of the fact that all other political parties in Massachusetts were united we have held our own in tfiis state. "During the next four years political organizations that we would have had In this" campaign, if time had permitted, will be completed and in 1912 the Independence party will be in a position strongly to contest for the electoral vote for many of the states in the union. ; , Say Party Won Victory.
"Although we were not successful in electing our candidates this year the party has won a victory achieved by no other party In this campaign. It made political corruption and trust methods an issue. It exposed Foraker, retired Haskell and made it dangerous for any party to publicly recognize such men as Bailey, McLaurln and Aldrich as leaders. "That these exposures had an immense effect on the national campaign la conceded by all. The voters believed that the republican party under the domination of Roosevelt and Taft represents less Standard Oil and trust support than the democratic party under the leadership of Bryan in view of the tru3t affiliations of some of his prominent supporters and this , is ehown by the vote.
MOVING DAY WAS

The large vans and Email wagons and drays were busy throughout the day. There was as much Interest taken in laying carpets and ' putting down carpets yesterday as ever in the early days of May. Election day determines the home of many men, who seem to live at one place but claim another as their borne.

THOMAS L. HISGEN. Hisgen "in commenting upon the election believes the Hearst party will make great gains at next election and says that the principal reason Bryan was defeated this year was because people thought the Standard "Oil more closely affiliated with the democrats than with republicans.
PARENTS BLAMED
Should Urge More Regular Attendance in the Public Schools.
NEW SYSTEM TO BE USED.
In an effort to secure the co-operation of the parents of the children' attending the Richmond public schools the principals at the different buildings have received blanks which they will fill out and send to the parents and telling number of cases of tardiness, number of minutes lost on this account and the number of days lost on account of sickness. One evil that is pointed out is the irregularity In attendance, many children falling back in their studies and then dropping out of their classes. These slips were originated by Prof. W. O. Wissler principal of the Pinley school and after a consultation with the school board it was decided to use them. The Letters. The following is the form of the letter to parents: (Name) School, Richmond, Ind. To the Patrons: Our school work is greatly hindered by irregluarity of attendance oa the part of pupils. Few parents seem to realize the , necessity or the importance of having their children in school every day, or the great disadvantages under which the child labors after a day pr two days' absence. He can seldom, if ever, take up his work where he left it, because the class moves on over a definite portion of the work each day. Many parents keep their children out of school on account of the most trivial circumstances. Nothing hinders the child more than this. Morally and intellectually, the results are demoralizing. There will always be much necessary absence for unavoidable reasons, but deliberate, unnecessary absence defrauds the child of the best of the school work. Since the beginning of this term of our pupils have been absent a total of days of this was on account of sickness, but fully one-half of it was unnecessary. In this same time we have had J. .... cases of tardiness. Parents should remember that by aiding the children in punctuality and regularity of attendance they are doing more than in any other way to help them; that unnecessary Irregularity in attendance begets in the child a spirit of indifference, aimlessness and helplessness, that will be detrimental to his school work and his life's work. One effect of irregularity in attendance is that many children fall back in their studies and drop out of their classes. This forces them into classes with those much younger than themselves. This often causes discouragement, and frequently leads pupils to drop out of school. The teachers desire your co-operation : in securing a more regular and more punctual attendance. They invite you to visit the school and to confer with them concerning the work of your children. ; , (Signed.) PrincipaL
DEATH Id MOTOR CAR
One KilledOne Fatally Hurt in Cincinnati Last Night.
ONE NARROWLY ESCAPES.
Cincinnati, O., Nov. 5. Swiftly speeding across the Eighth street viaduct in an effort to reach the theater in time for the opening act, a big two-seated Royal Blue tourist car, belonging to Undertaker J. J. Radel, of State avenue, driven by his son, Steven Radel, and containing two other young men, William Regan, a chauffeur, and Albert Altfeld, a butcher, became unmanageable last night about 8:30 o'clock and crashed into the Iron railing on the north side of the viaduct, at a place where the sidewalk had been torn out. The machine wedged into the open space and hung out into space, while the three men were hurled out of the machine. The bodies of two of tbem, Altfela and Regan, were thrown clear of the railing and forty feet to the ground in the bottoms on the east side of Millcrek. Altfeld was killed almost instantly, his brains 'being dashed out on the wheel of a contractor's dirt wagon about thirty feet distant from the bridge pier. Regan was. hurled into a pile of rubbish, and received a fracture of the skull, broken hands and numerous cuts and was badly injured. Saved From Death. Young Radel was saved from deatn or serious injury by the fact that his right foot became entangled in the steering wheel. He fell over the side of the machine, but caught hold of the edge of the bridge and pulled himself back from the yawning opening. His ankle was broken ana he was badly bruised.

Henry Watterson Says People Were all Well Contented
Lib bib.
Louisville, Ky., Nov. u. Henry Watterson said in today's Courier-Journal: "The result of Tuesday's election shows conclusively that a great majority of the people of the central section of the United States are well contented with things as they are; that it is better to endure the conceded shortcomings of the party in power than embark upon an unknown sea of continuous agitation; that Bryant meant this, whilst Taft meant rest; In short, that a dollar, though tainted, In hand is worth a bush full of patriotic abstractions. , "The idiosyncrasy of the time is commerce. As in the last century it was liberty reaching out after institutional freedom and measurably attaining it it is now materialism reaching out after market. The average voter of better education and Intelligence takes no thought of the hereafter, and is even more Indifferent to the herebefore. He is completely engrossed by the present. That which Bacon calls 'the wisdom of our ancestors makes as little appeal to his reverence or reason as that whicn

Burns calls 'light from heaven' makes to his imagination. He would not exchange the current crop reports with a rising price list for political economy. He either carries the fool of the vicinage with him or else raises enough dust to blind his eyes and disarm his suffrage. ...j.; ... ; f . . , Deaf to All Appeal. "The results show that we oversi2ed the spiritual and undersized the material in the hearts and minds of the people. They were deaf alike to precedents, to reason and to eloquence; for nothing could surpass, as nothing, has ever equaled, the personal canvass of Mr. Bryan; its wondrous lucidity and power of statement; its splendid intellectual and physical endurance; its unanswerable argument. Nor did Ignatius of Lyola sweep to triumph through a word of Incarnate evil bearing the cross of Jesus to triumph with greater force of Inspiration and truth than did the heroic son of Nebraska traverse a land gaping with curiosity, but too busy over its work and play to consider any danger to the immortal soul of its constitutional fabric."
