WILLIAM H. TAFT CARRIES THE COUNTRY (Continued From Page One.)
Indianapolis Indications are that Marshall will carry Marlon county. The Btate democratic committee claims Bryan will pull through in the state. The claim is made, also, the democrats will carry Marion county for all offices. In Monroe township Marshall beats Watson by 160 votes. In ten precincts in Montgomery county Taft's vote is 2.042 and Bryan's 1,893. Three precincts in Franklin county give Bryan a plurality of 13 and Marshall 15.
Indianapolis 100 precincts in Indiana, mainly in Marion county give Taft 24,050; Bryan 23,330; Watsou 19.9S7; Marshall 22.5S5.
Indianapolis Chairman Goodrich has a dispatch from Frank Hitchcock saying Taft will carry New York.
Indianapolis Sixty-two precincts In Indiana, give Watson 15,542; Marshall, 1G.S42. The democratic gain over two years ago is 2,64.
Indianapolis, Ind. Forty precincts in Indianapolis heard from by the democratic committee, give Taft, 9,796; Bryan, 8,J53. The first twenty-five precincts out of 138 in Marion county, give Bryan. 5,084; Taft, 6.US7, a net democratic gain of 775. At this rate Taft will carry Marion county by about JSOCk Taft and Marshall are running close together on the vote.
greatest surprises of the election. Instead of giving Bryan the 100,000 so confidently claimed by Bosses Murphy and McCarren, Taft actually carried the metropolis. This is the second time a republican candidate for president has carried New York City, McKinley having a plurality of 61,000 in- 1896. Four years later Bryan carried the city by 28,000 and in 1904 Parker carried it for lieutenant governor by 139,000, and this year the democratic leaders felt sure of from 90,000 to 110,000 for Bryan. Even the republicans conceded the city to Bryan by 75.000 and probably there are no more surprised men in the country today than the Taft managers with the glad tidings from the great city before them. It will be difficult for the Tammany leaders to convince Mr. Bryan and the democracy of the country that the national democratic ticket has had a square deal in the metropolis. Hearst's scheme of private revenge upon Bryan did not change the result in New York state, but it did contri
bute materially to keeping down the Bryan vote. Hisgen polled upward of 30.000 votes in New York City, most of which would have gone to Bryan if Hearst had not been out after the
commoner's scalp. The Hearst candidate for governor of New York, Shearn, did not get enough votes to have saved Chanler if all had been cast for him. It is undoubtedly true, however, that Hearst's warfare upon Bryan and Chanler, both of whom were declared "ingrates and traitors," seriously hurt the democratic candidates, and hurt them more than had been, counted upon. The election returns give no indication that the Rockefeller episode did any damage to Taft. They do indicate that the tremendous opposition of business men to Bryan, based upon fear of him and fear of labor as a political agency, which was roused into great activity during the last two or three weeks of the campaign, did much to make the decisive states safe for Taft.
Democratic, 5,770; scratched ballots, 17,540. It Is believed that at least two-thirds of the scratched ballots will go for Taft and that he will carry this city.
Denver, Colo. Colorado is surely in the Bryan column by from 2,000 to 4,000, and Shafroth (Dem.) will be elected governor. The legislature is democratic by 15 on a Joint ballot insuring the election of Charles J. Hughes, Jr., to the senate. Taylor, a Democrat, will probably be elected as congressman-at-large.
Denver, Colo. Twenty-three precincts out of a total of 146 in Denver, Bryan 1,360. Taft 1,403 on straight ballots.
Denver Seventy precincts out of 146 in Denver report Taft 6,108, Bryan 5,770; scratched 1,754.
OLD WAYNE GIVES TAFT GOOD VOTE ELECTION DAY (Continued From Page One.)
Kansas Topeka, Kans. The hearvlest vote in the state's history has been polled. Both sides claim a victory.
Topeka, Kans. Returns from fifteen counties indicate Taft carries Kansas by 22.000.
Colorado Denver, Colo. Both sides claiming state; though chances are Bryan has been successful.
Indianapolis Marion county, thirtyone precincts, Taft, 7,918; Bryan, 7.5G0; Watson, 7.SS8, and Marshall, 8,-363.
Denver Returns received at Republican state headquarters from 70 out of a total of 146 precincts in Denver give the Republican national and state ticket 6.10S oa straight ballots;
jorlties given them. The defeat of
Cook was a great disappointment to the local saloon element who are very desirious that the next legislature be strongly democratic. According to unofficial figures, which are correct in nearly every instance, Will Robbins, candidate for recorder on the republican ticket, led his ticket with a majority of 3,240 over Reiser. All republican candidates on the county ticket won with ease. Beeson and Farlowe, candidates for commissioner, had no trouble winning out despite the fact that they, together with Ladd. were not endorsed by the Wayne County Civic league. Tomorrow the Palladium will give the official vote of the county by precincts in tabulated form. Returns on the result of the election in this county were received by the election board at the circuit . court room in the court house. There reports were exceedingly slow coming in because of the heavy vote cast, probably the heaviest in the history of the county and because there was an immense amount of "scratching done,
necessitating extra work for the poll clerks. At five o'clock this morning there was at least one-fourth of the polls heard from. It was not until nearly nine o'clock that precincts 1, 4 and 5 of Jacksoni township reported. Members of the election board, several county officers and three newspaper men waited until the bitter end and they were a hollow-eyed, sorry looking lot" The weather yesterday was ideal and because of the favorable conditions a heavy vote was out

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 4. Returns Indicate the election of Herbert S. Hadley as governor, over Wm. S. Cowherd, democrat by small plurality. It is claimed by republicans that entire state ticket is elected. The electoral vote of the 6tate will probably go to Bryan. Cowherd ran considerably behind the national ticket Senator Stone is leading Gov. Folk for the nomination for U. S. senate and has carried many counties Folk has claimed. Folk lost Cole county, in. which the state capital is located. R, C. Kerens, millionaire seems to have captured the republican nomination for United States senator although Lieut. Governor John C. McKinley and Assistant Attorney General John Kennish are close behind him.
