m predicting that New York state will give a plurality both to Mr. Taft and Governor Hughes, republican campaign managers base their assertion on a remarkable canvass which has Just been completed covering every election district in the state. It was made by 12,000 men. and it recorda the intentions of 140,000 voters, divided about equally between the two regular parties. The canvasa gives Taft a plurality of more than 100,000 in the state and indicates that Governor Hughes will not run more than 40,000 behind him, which, means that the governor will be re-elected by at least eo.OOO. The canvass shows .further, the party managers say, that the tide has set in for Hughe ad that he has made big gains during the last week. No more extensive canvass was ever made by either party In this state than the on n which the claims of the republicans are based, and they eay that they are satisfied that it is accurate. It was made under the personal supervision of William L. Ward, national committeeman from the state. In some sections of the state the canvass shows that there is a very strong leeling against Governor Hughes. It

It shows many of the old line democrats who stood out against Mr. Bryan four years ago are going straight through this year, but it shows also that in the cities there are a good many merchants and business men, ordinarily democratic who are going to rote for Mr. Taft.

Manila, Oct. 31. Advices from the Illigan, in Northern Mindanao, state that the Mow outlaws are now terrifying the natives. Troops from Camp Overtos are in pursuit of the band of outlaws, which number twenty-five. Military officials generally declare

that an exhaustive campaign is neces

sary In Mindanao to wipe out the outlaws, who are growing bolder from time to time. Cholera and the heavy rains have

kept the troops inactive during the present Beason, as also political condi

tions in the United States. General Bliss, commanding the department,

has asked permission to send a large force against the bandits both in Mindanao and Basilan. He declares that these bands must be conquered before

the development of the country can continue.

Preparations are under way for a general campaign Immediately after

the election. Officers on leave are being recalled and the troops placed in

readiness. The plan of campaign is independent of the latest outbreak. It is believed here that a large force will

be employed.

The troops available consist of two

regiments of infantry, one of cavalry, three mountain batteries and nine companies of native scouts. Datto

Ami Gundalungun; the most notorious outlaw is at the head of the Moro

depredations.

to call at the office of the county clerk for his supplies arrived last evening about 5.45 o'clock. This was only a few minutes before the clerk's office was closed for the day. Had not the inspector arrived and secured his supplies for election day he would not have been permitted pay for his service, under the law.

Just why the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern Traction Company does not begin the construction of its proposed freight depot Is not understood by the city officials. The company announced some time ago it would begin the work but nothing has been done other than the placing of the tracks across the sidewalk in front of the property. The injunction proceedings are supposed to cause the delay.

BLACK HERO SAVES CHILD. A Negro Coachman Is Badly Injured. Frankfort, Ky., Oct. 31. To save the life of little Dora Hoge, aged 7 years, daughter of French Hoge, a banker of this city, Thomas Berry, a negro coachman, permitted the wheel of a carriage to run over his back, and probably Injuring him for life. Efforts are being made to get a Carnegie medal for the negro.
