INDIANA NOT DOUBTFUL.

PLACED AMONG THOSE STATES THAT WILL BE CARRIED BY REPUBLICANS OHIOAN MAY CARRY MISSOURI.

New York, Oct. 22. Frank H. Hitchcock, chairman of the Republican Na

tional Committee, has received the final estimate of the vote for William H. Taft and William J. Bryan from the Republican national committeemen in the forty-seven states of the union. These estimates convince him of the election of Mr. Tart on Nov. 3 beyond all question of doubt According' to the figures sent In, which have been shown to the members of the executive and advisory committees of the national committee, they indicate that Mr.' Taft will carry 30 states with a combined vote In the electoral college of 33, with a possibility of carrying .three others, with 14 votes additional. The table allows Mr. Bryan only 12 states, the "solid south," with 127 votes in the electoral college, with the prospect of two doubtful states, with 31 more, a possible total of 158. Even if Mr. Bryan should carry all of the five doubtful states in Mr. Hitchcock's list, he would have only 172 votes in the electoral college to 311 for ' Mr. Taft i Mr. Hitchcock's estimate of the states sure to be carried by the Republicans is as follows: California, 10; Colorado, 5; Connecticut 7; Delaware, S; Idaho, 3; Illinois, 27; Indiana, 15; Iowa,13; Kansas, 10; Maine, 6; Massachusetts, 16; Michigan, 14; Minnesota, 11; Nebraska, 8; New Hampshire, 4; New Jersey, 12; New York, 39; North Dakota, 4; Ohio, 23; Oregon, 4; Pennsylvania, 34; Rhode Island, 4; South Dakota, 4; Utah, 3; Vermont 4; Washington, 5; West Virginia, 7; Wisconsin, 13; Wyoming, 3; total, 311. Doubtful, probably for Taft: Maryland, 8; Montana, 3; Nevoda, 3. Probable to tal for Taft, 325. Mr. Hitchcock's table places the following states in the column sure to be carried by Mr. Bryan: Alabama. 11; Arkansas, 9; Florida, 5; Georgia, 13: Louisiana, 9; Mississippi, lO; North. Carolina, 12: Oklahoma, 7; South Carolina, 9; Tennessee, 12; Texas, 18; Virginia, 12. Total, 127. Doubtful, but leaning to Bryan: Ken

tucky, 13; Missouri, 18. Probable total for Bryan, 158. Mr. Hitchcock said he thought Mr. Taft had a fighting chance to carry Missouri, and indicated that while in Chicago, Friday and Saturday, he would arrange to concentrate the Republican campaign in the middle west and Missouri next week.

More Civilization Only Thing That Saves Dark Man From Vice

Lake Mohonk, N. Y., Oct 22. With a large attendance of men and women devoted to the welfare of peoples over whom the United States Government exercises the right of guardianship, the annual Lake Mohonk Conference of Friends of the Indian and Other Dependent Peoples began here Wednesday. Many men and women prominent in educational and philanthropic circles of the country delivered addresses. Dr. Elmer Ellsworth Brown, United States Commissioner of Education, in a brief address, said, in part: Referring to the tendency of the "dark man" first to take on the white man's vices, the Commissioner said

that "It takes the white man's virtues to combat the white man's vices." Once the dark man gets the "first corrupting contact with civilization, he said, "nothing will save him but more civilization. He must be taught some new Industry or taught to have some part of his own in the white man's Industry. And when it comes to a conflict with the white man's vices, he must acquire the white man's morality and religion or he is doomed. This does not mean that the dark man must acquire all of the white man's civilization or acquire It in a hurry. But he must acquire enough of the good that is in it to overcome the evil that is In if
