The fore feet of a horse driven by Amos Gould, a farmer plunged through the roadbed while Mr. Gould was on his way to town this morning and out of the opening came a fountain of honey and an army of Irate bees. The bees . put Farmer Gould to flight and then attacked the horse, which could not extricate himself from the hole. From the stings and the exertion the horse died, but Mr. Gould took from the hole nearly 200 pounds of honey, which he sold for $25 and bought a new horse. SHEATH GOWN GOES Dressmakers Declare It Is Not And Never Was in Good Style. MISS WHITE SAYS SO. New York, Sept. 12. Coincident with the opening of the semi-annual convention of the Dressmakers' Protective association of America, in the Masonic temple. It was asserted that the sheath gown, as such, unmodified and unashamed, Is not, never has been and Isn't likely to be good style. Miss Elizabeth A. C. White, president, manager, and chief lecturer of the association, made this declaration without reservation after a long and exhaustive search of Paris for one of the really and truly peep affording sheath gowns. Miss White even went so far as to say that the commotion about the gown was caused mainly by two cafe chanteuses from the outer boulevards, who wore the garment at the Chantilly races. iHAVE ' COMPLETED PLANS. GROWTH OF COUNTRY AND DEMAND FOR HORSES CAUSE OF ADVANCE IN NUMBER IN SERV-ICE.

The government has been xaKing a census of the horses of the country tnd reports that there are over 20.tuiO.tKt horses and nearly 4.mt mules in the United States. This Is a greater number of horses by t-everal huiv dred thousHii.l than were ever before reiKJited and Indicates that the notion that we are about entering upon a horseless age U not Justified by the returns. Electricity has relieved horses almost eneirely of their o!d Job of hauling street cars. This was an occupation in which thousands of , horses used to have their spirits broken and their lives worn out. Nov they are released for other service perhaps not so hard. The various kinds of automobile have made horses much less necessary for another kind of service. With the increased use of seJf-propl!ing wagons and machines in use on farm or highway, it looks as though a diminished use of horse power was- inevitable, but as yet it is not manifest. Doubtless the increase of the horse population of the country would be greater than it is if it were not for the development of the various horseless vehicles. That the supply of horses and the demand for them have Increased in spite of the enormous development In the use of the automobile and the electric car Is due to. and is proof of, the still greater growth of the country at large.
