8pecial Correspondence. Indianapolis, Sept. 9. An amusing phase of the recent state convention of the Independence league, of which William R. Hearst was the stellar attraction, is coming to light. Already there have been two protests against their nomination by men who were placed on the league ticket without consultation, as they say. The Hearst boomers were determined to fill up their ticket, and they wont at it tocomplete the job without any formalities. The idea of asking Smith or Jones whether he would stand for a nomination did not appeal to them, it seems. A league booster would approach Smith's best friend and ask if he would accept the honor of a nomination. "I guess he would," the friend of Smith would reply, and that would be enough for all purposes. Smith would be nominated and he would have to like It. And so it happens that Elmore Creceius of Crawford county, nominated for judge of the appellate court, and two presidential elctors George T. Frank of Pike county, and Oscar V. Nay of Johnson county, have cast aside the honors thrust upon them. They refuse to stand for anything from the Inckpcr: Irncc leaguers.: Little eruptions li' c ihr-.p ''o not dis-j cancies will be filled and the fight will go merrily on for Hearst and revenge. TWO TOPICS OF PRESENT IMPORTANCE Two of the most important topics of present conversation are, who will be our next president, and Root Juice, but Root Juice seems to have the advantage, and why not? Personal health is and should be one of the greatest considerations of life, and as so many local people are praising the new remedy. Root Juice, it is not surprising that so many of thf afflicted xeople of this county are so eager to talk about it and get all of the information they can in relation to the many remarkable cures it has made and is making, Ii invariably proves a great and agreeable surprise to weak, nervous, dyspeptic, constipated people, for after using It for a short while the soothing, healing and tonic properties of the wonderful remedy removes irritated and sore conditions from the linings of the stomach, bowels and bladder, heals and strengthens the liver and kidneys to healthy action, resulting in a good appetite, food well digested, bowels regular, good, rich blood, free from rheumatic poison and it soon nourishes and strengthens the whole nervous system. The people at the drug store are proud of the wonderful merits of Root Juice, and gladly tell all Interested of much of the great good It Is doing here. A. G. Luken & Co's drug store. NORTH CAROLINA TUBNSJOWN EARLY Notifies Washington It Must Care for Leper. Washington, Sept. 9. Assistant Attorney General Clement of North Carolina and President Gillett of the state board of health have notified the District of Columbia commissioners it is the federal government's duty, not North Carolina's, to care for John R. Early, the leper isolated here. Mr. Clement says railroads would not knowingly transport the leper and the latter could not go through the country to his home owing to the danger of communicating the disease to others en route. Both of them point out that Early, though a North Carolina citizen, contracted the disease in the Philippine service. Dr. Gillett says Mrs. Early and her child, if they return to the state will be quarantined unless properly certified to be free from leprosy. The district commissioners have asked for advice as to forcing North Carolina to receive the leper. Amusements "A Texas Ranger." The characters in "A Texas Ranger" are not overdrawn, but are types of the people of the locality in which the scenes are laid, and are depicted in & natural manner. The cast for the play has been selected with an entire fitness for their respective parts, both from a practical knowledge of the conditions existing in the locality and the ability to portray the characters for which they have been cast. "A Texas Ranger will be seen at the Gennett Saturday matinee and night. Sept, 12. TO ATTEND COLLEGE. Cterald S. Fitzgibbons, Robert Fitzgibbons and Valentine Schmidt left yesterday for Rensselaer, Ind., where they will attend St. Joseph's College for the coming year. They were accompanied by Rev.- Fatber..Hoffman of St. Mary's church.

On account of the prolonged drought Liberty fire insurance agents threaten to raise the rates on fire insurance. They state that the water supply for the town is too small for any ordinary fire and weather conditions have increased the danger. A3 a result the town board has been the recipient of the following communication from the Insurance men: To Board of Trustees of Liberty, Ind. We, the undersigned. Insurance agents, would report to the honorable board of trustees of the town of Liberty that we have visited the Liberty water works and find an insufficient supply of water in the ponds to protect the town against fire of any ordinary size. And would advise the board to husband all the water possible during the present dry weather by cutting use of water, and by so doing save us raising the insurance rates. C. K. Slop"'-John B. Macy. About Tour Dishes. Dishwashing, and the cleansing of the articles you eat with, demand a perfectly pure soap. No one likes even to think of the impure fats and raw rosin of common soaps, coming in contact with the dishes, glassware and the knives and forks. Better be on the safe side and use 2asy Task soap. Everyone knows that's pure, and it only costs five cents a cake. Your grocer has it.

The first measurements of the kind ever at tempted in Cincinnati were taken yes terday from the suspension bridge to determine the volume of water in the Ohio River by first ascertaining the velocity of the current The work is be ing carried on under the direction of Engineer A. H. Horton, the actual testings being made by W. G. Hoyt, a Cornell student, and Max Chapman, who are employed by the water resource branch of the United States geological survey. This work is being carried on to determine the feasibility of a general reservoir system at the headwaters of the stream for controlling the flow of water, being distinct from that under which the army engineers are working having in view the construction of a system of locks and dams along the streams. The test was made. every forty feet along the suspension bridge, and at the conclusion of the work the young men will leave for Wheeling to continue their experiments there. The plan is to determine the velocity at stages varying from ' extremely low to extremely high water. TO IMPROVE PROPERTY. Adam H. ORDERED TO AID FALL FESTIVAL WILL PROVIDE FIRE PROTECTION FOR BEALLVIEW ADDITION. Although council was "asleep at the switch" Monday night, performing the duties imposed upon them when there was not enough members present to transact business legally, no such mistake was made at the special session held last evening. Clerk Merrill carefully counted noses and found that nine of the eleven city fathers were present. Monday night only seven councilmen, or less than the required two-thirds of the membership, were in attendance. This made it necessary for Mayor Schillinger to call council into special session last evening. The three ordinances read and adopted under the suspension of the rules Monday night were again read and passed last evening. These ordinances authorized the floating of a temporary loan of $20,000; the postponement of the enforcement of the Main street pole ordinance until October 1 and the appropriations for the various departments of the city government. At the request of the Young Men's Business Club council last evening au thorized the club to use the following places during the fall festival Elm place from Ninth street to Tenth street, and, if necessary, to Eleventh street, the South A street market place. Councilman Von Pein stated that one of the provisions of the contract between the South Side Improvement Association and the Rahn-Carpenter company to secure the location of the plant of that company in the Beallview addition was to provide gas, water and fire protection. Mr. Von Pein stated the gas company and the water works company had agreed to extend their lines to Beallview. He said that fire protec tion could be provided if the city would consent to the location of a fire plug on the site of the company's plant. Council readily agreed to lo cate a fire plug where desired. Councilman Englebert wanted to know what had become of the petition to place cement walks, curbs and gutters on North Eighth street from Main street to North E street. Clerk Mer rill stated that the board had held this petition up pending the completion of the Y. M. C. A. building. BAR HARBOR. The Early Days of This Now Fanoii Mnine Summer Resort. In ltS8 Mount Desert and Its neighborhood were granted by the French to a man named Cadillac. When Acadia was finally as a result of that long war relinquished to England it was given to Governor Bernard, but as this gentleman when the Revolution broke out wns loyal to King George the estate was confiscated. Meanwhile M. Bartholomew Gregoire ami his wife, Maria Theresa, who was tli' uhlaughter of the original gra:.. jvived the claim of Cadillac, and ft wai allowed. For years the island remained a solitary place, with long stretches of unbroken forests into whose labyrinths no stranger dared venture without a guide, Its land uncleared, its future undreamed of. but artists, weary of the commonplace, found out the spot and bore to dwellers in towns glimpses of its wild charms, and now and then a world worn, brain spent man would steal away to seek the island's solitnde and stimulus. These seekers for beauty or health would carry their own camp outfit or later would patronize the hotels. The first summer cottage there was built on a site that was bought for $300. When fashion had put her stamp of approval upon the place land that would not have brought a dime an acre during the time of the Gregoires was sold at from $25,000 to upward of $100,000 an acre. Four Track News. Grinding? Incense In China. A missionary traveling down the Lan river in Mongolia says he passed thirty-one rapids in one day. At most of them were water mills for the grinding of aromatic trees into powder to make incense. The trees are chopped into small pieces and thrown into a hole in a heavy millstone, which revolves on a larger stone as the water rushes through below. In the rainy season, when the river flows full and fast, a pair of mills can grind 200 catties (260 pounds) of incense a day. It is made up into bundles of this weight and sold on the spot for fifty strings of cash (about $6). Relieves sour stomach, palpitation of the heart Digests what you eat

LOCAL INTEREST SHOWNN GAMES Tennis Tournaments at Indianapolis Attract Attention. Much interest is being shown by local tennis players in the results of the second annual state championship tennis games at Indianapolis. The tournament is held under the auspices of the United States National Lawn Tennis association on the club courts at the Winona Technical institute. A handsome silver trophy is to be given the winner of the singles by Julius Walk. The Charles Ma;er bowl, made of solid silver, is the challenge trophy. The Indianapolis Tennis Association put up a cup for the runner up In the singles. Frel Appel, present state champion will defend his title by playing the winner of the tournament for the Mayer bowl. Tbe Stuart Kinga. The family name of the Stuarts was originally, as Mr. Bayley observes, Fitzalan. The original Walter Fitzalan, brother of the ancestor of the dukes of Norfolk, was lord high steward of Scotland, and from this circumstance his branch of the family appears to have adopted the name of Stewart. When the change began is not certain, but It was probably not later than the time of Alexander, the great-grandson of Walter Fitzalan, for both his sons James, tbe grandfather of Robert II. and all tbe Scottish Stewart kings, and John, the ancestor of Lord Darnley appear to have borne the name of Stewart. Notes and Queries. A Designing Doctor. The Sydney Bulletin tells of a motoring doctor who ran into and capsized a pedestrian. . He looked behind bim and, seeing the man still prone, made a circuit and ran back, intending to stop beside and help him. But the motor shot a yard or two beyond the mark and hit the man again Just as he was getting up. The doctor turned his car once more and was cautiously stealing near to the prostrate sufferer when an excited spectator rushed from the sidewalk and, shaking the victim, exclaimed: "Look out! - He's coming at you again!" Whereupon the man scrambled up and started to run. Hate All Around. The famous English Chief Justice Holt -and his wife hated each other to the limit, and when she fell dangerously ill he was so delighted that he became disgracefully tipsy. But his wife was equal to the emergency and sent for the great Dr. Radcliffe, who hated Holt, and therefore out of spite when the case was presented to him came with great promptness and saved her life. ORDER FOR ENGINES Spare Pennsy Iron Horses Are Ordered Sent to Eastern Divisions. A SIGN OF PROSPERITY. Word has been received that all the spare Pennsylvania engines must be sent east as soon as possible in order that the freight business that is now accumulating can be taken care of. Two or three engines have been deadheaded through Richmond during the past several days and the order calling for 18 is received with pleasure by the railroad officials as it is the first sign of prosperity since the recent stringency. It means that the times of dull business are passing and the traffic will once more assume the proportions it bore prior to a year ago. Engines were sent from the east to the different divisions in the west to be repaired and overhauled so that they are now in first class condition. Many of the officials expect that the eastern division will demand more engines to care for the traffic which is said to be exceedingly heavy. AUTO HOLDUP MEN MHJE IN STATE First Report C6mes From the Vicinity of Greenfield. Indianapolis, Sept. 0. Has Indiana developed a band of auto highway hold up men? Two visitors in Indianapolis from Dayton, O., wish to know. M. S. Benn and W. A. Hoskins, real estate men of the Ohio city, had an experience between this city and Greenfield last night that they would prefer not to repeat. They were bowling along about eight or ten miles an hour six or eight miles west of Greenfield, between 9 and 1 o'clock, when what was either an attempt at a holdup or a cowardly attack in the dark occurred. Their first warning came in the shape of a stone that smashed through the glass of the car's wind shield. At the side of the road just ahead, they saw three men. Pollowing the crash of the stone through the glass there was a flash and report and the plng-g-g of a bullet was heard uncomfortably close to the heads of Benn and Hoskins. They stopped the car and sprang out. Benn fired two shots in the direction of the three men, causing them to run. They cut across the field to the south. The colored servant carried on the car, fired two more shots and the men ran faster. The surprised travelers then came on to the city.
