Affairs of the Sporting World
Jim McGutherie, a colored man, called at police headquarters this morning to solicit funds for a colored republican drum corps. As Judge ConTerse produced a quarter he looked threateningly , at Jim and remarked, "See that the money you have secured here is spent for drums instead of drinks. If you get pinched Jim, I
promise to put you somewhere where !
you will be kept until after the campaign is over." "I'm on do water wagon, Jedge.'-No danger of me missing de campaign" Jim hastily replied to the court's warning. -

This afternoon they again returned ifi amp. "Catching many fish out there?" was asked Meredith this morning. "Sure, shot 'leven squirrels yesterday." New York, by taking two games from Boston yesterday, ' managed to maintain its lead. The Pirates grimly retained second place by again trouncing the Reds. Chicago continues to be within easy striking distance of the Ciants. Yesterday the Cubs won a double header from St. Louis. Marquard discredited the report that he was "all in" yesterday by letting the Columbus champs- down without a hit or a ru. A hostile crowd gave the Rube an ovation after his great performance. Indianapolis having won yesterday, the Star correspondent again figures that the Browns will win the pennant. Should Columbus defeat the Browns today he will view the situation from a different angle. The Cleveland club Is attracting the attention of the sporting world this Eeason. For the first time in its history, the Naps have made a consistent fight all season for the pennant. They have played game baseball, too, as
nearly all year the team has been bad
ly crippled. It is estimated that the three games recently played at Chicago between the Cubs and the Giants were witnessed by over 75,(XiO people. How would you like to own a champion ball team? Hal Chase, the star first baseman of the New York Americans, has informed his club that he is through with organized base ball forever. He states the management has circulated stories
detrimental to his character. Chase
will probably play with the Stockton, Cal., "outlaws."
The Weiss All Stars of Cleveland want a game with Manager Jessup's
independents. This outfit Is a novelty
as the pitcher is a young girl, Alta Weiss. Jim Bradley of the Cleveland team says she is "a remarkable little
player in skirts." Brandon, late of Kansas City, pitched for the Pirates yesterday, let
ting the Reds down with six hits and one run. The new Red recruit, Du-
buc, allowed Pittsburg only five hits, but he received miserable support.
