"Come off of that, and get a shake on yourself." "You come up heah and get me," re plied a negro, perched on the top of an eight foot straw pile on South Sixth street, to the angry demand of Police Sergeant McManus. Seeing It would be necessary to force the negro to come down, McManus gave the straw pile a stiff push and down came the colored man with an avalanche of straw on top of him. McManus dug his quarry out and started for police headquarters. At Sixth and Main streets the fellow bucked. "Throw down yo' gun and I'll show you who is the best man," he said to McManus. "I haven't any gun to throw down," replied the sergeant, as he proceeded to shake the negro's teeth loose from their sockets. After that there was but little trouble getting the man to Jail.
