Ira Swisher, lessee of the Gennett theater, has given an option on his lease, which expires in September next year, to Harry Summers, a prominent New York theatrical manager, who controls a chain of theaters in this section of the country. Mrs. Swisher, who in the absence of her husband from the city, has acted as manager of the popular play house, has not yet been notified whether the terms given Summers were acceptable. In local theatrical circles this morning, it was rumored that the terms would not be accepted and that the management of the theater would continue to remain in the hands of the Swishers until the expiration of their lease. This week an agent of the Summers interests was in the city accompanied by B. F. Shiveley of South Bend, who acted as attorney for Summers. While here negotiations for securing the Gennett were opened. For her husband Mrs. Swisher gave an option on tbe lease and Clarence Gennett, owner of the building, signified his approval of the- proposed change of management. "Mrs. Swisher has given an option on the lease and has named her terms. These are now being considered by Mr. Summers but up to the present time no word has been received from him. The Swisher lese expires a year from next month," stated Mr. Gennett this morning' when asked to confirm the report that tbe Gennett theater would soon change management.
Should the house pass under the control of the Summers interests it
would still continue to offer the public the best theatrical attractions obtainable. In the event the deal is not consumated the amusement public will lose nothing as Mrs. Swisher has booked a long list of excellent attractions for the ensuing season. The Summers interests 'in this state control two houses at Marion, a house at South Bend and one at Goshen. All the productions appealing in these
nouses are booked through Klaw & Erlanger or in other words the theatrical trust. Mrs. Swisher has entered into a contract with Klaw and Erlanger to book rl' of her attractions the coming season.

Nature Solves Hard Arithmetic Problem Through Medium of Gold Fish
Milton, Ind., Aug. 27. Just a little
problem in arithmetic, 12 x ? equals
1,000. School is not in session and It
would be a shame to make the happy lads and lassies struggle with such a
perplexing problem. Lieave it to nature or maybe the nature fakir. J. I-. Manlove of this place claims he has the solution. It is something like this
twelve gold fish placed In a small pond multiplied by four month equals 1,000 little gold fish. Manlove says the rule applied is as old as the world. 1-ast spring he placed the twelve republican finntes in the pond and last week seined the pond and removed a mass of first voters that "he claims numbers at least 1,000.

Indianapolis, Aug. 27. Charles W. Fairbanks, vice president of the United States, is at his home in Indianapolis. He arrived yesterday, and, aside from one or two trips he will make
outside of the state in the next few weeks, he will spend the most of the time until election day in Indianapolis. The vice president left Indianapolis a month ago as the official representative of the United States to appear at the :)Xth anniversary of the founding of Quebec. The vice president and Mrs. Fairbanks were the guests of the royal families of Quebec and the vice president passed the compliments of the season with the Prince of Wales, who represented the mother country at the exercises. Mr. Fairbanks is in the best of health. Notwithstanding a number of
newspaper reports had him in a hospital at Excelsior, Springs, Mo., he is hale and hearty and ready to enter into the Indiana campaign. "I never was in better health in my life," said Mr. Fairbanks last night. Within the next few days Mr. Fairbanks will have a conference with the officers of the republican state committee and the question of what share he will take in the campaign will be discussed.

Hot Croaa Una Memorial. At Bromley-by-Bow is a public bouse with tbe ign of "The Widow's Son," and there a curious old custom is maintained. Once the tavern was kept by a widow with an only son. He started on a sea voyage on a Good Friday and promised that he would be back by that day In the following year. He did not come, but for years the mother kept her promise to prepare a hot cross bun for bis return. Each year she lived the anxious mother observed tbe custom, which has been maintained by successive hosts and hostesses of the inn ever since. Now, as for long time past, "within its guest chamber may be seen old oaken rafters with buns hung up between." London Standard.

Balston, Spa, N. Y.. Aug. '27. An in
cident unparalleled in the history of the state occurred at the Saratoga County Fair, Wednesday, when Governor Hughes was humiliated in the ryes of thousands of people by the
horsemen, who refused to start their horses while the governor was on the
grounds.
The incident, it is believed, will make votes for the governor should he run again this fall, as the action was
strongly condemned on all sides, and the fair officials were almost at the
point of disqualifying the owners. The governor had made his visit to the fair and at the conclusion of his address took a seat in the grand stand, surrounded by prominent republicans of the county. The horsemen at a meeting last night, it is said, decided to retailif.te against the governor for his action in racing matters, by not starting the races. The horsemen openly charged that the governor, by favoring legislation antagonistic to their interests, had hurt their business, and they proposed to show him their feelings by refusing to trot a race in his presence. The fair officials did their very best to get the horsemen to start, but they were obdurate. They were about ready to disqualify the horsemen when the governor departed from the grounds. As the governor left he was cheered and for the horsemen there were jeers and cat calls. The races proceeded at once, but it was nearly dark before they were completed.

Kobodf Waa Offended. A Michigan congressman tells story:
"A certain citizen of my district was called upon to defend a man who had soundly whipped a worthless individual. He had been indicted for assault
and battery, 'contrary to the peace and ,
dignity of the people of Michigan.' The lawyer contended that the prosecution could not hope to convict unless the entire allegation was proved. 'We ad mit the assault and battery,' he said, 'but we deny that It was contrary tc the peace and dignity of the people ol Michigan. "The jury so held, and the fellow wai acquitted.'
