Anderson, Ind., Aug. 18. The quiet which has seemingly prevailed among the members of the Civic league in this county has been misleading. President Dinsmore has visited each precinct chairman in the county. The
attitude of the various candidates on the liquor question has been obtained
and the members of the league are
preparing their forces to bring about
the election of the men who have
stood for the cause of temperance. The voters in the "dry" townships, will, it is believed, vote as they sign
ed the remonstrance.
Terre Haute, Ind., Aug. 18. At a meeting of the Bituminous Operators' association last night it was decided to stand by the action of Tuesday night, Aug. 11, and not to allow the "check-off" in the mines of the Eleventh district. Hopes of an early settlement of the difficulty and strike were blasted by the action. The Vandalia Coal company which operates several mines, has announced it will continue the "check off," and 3,000 miners were prepared to return to work today in the mines of this company. It seemed certain that other operators would be compelled to follow the Vandalia company, a3 it owns about thirty mines in the district. The Vandalia company will now abide by the decision of the oierators' association it is believed. When the Vandalia Coal company informed the executive board of the Mine Workers' that the "check-off" would not be stoppedthe coal diggers believed that a prompt adjustment was at hand. Ordered Back to Work. The men employed at Jackson Hill mine were ordered back to work yesterday by President Van Horn of the executive board as no notice was served on them declaring the "check-off" at an end. As soon as they learned that a strike was ordered the miners walked out of the entries without trying to learn whether the "checkoff" was in force or not. Officials of the Vandalia Coal company declined to discuss the situation after the meeting last night, stating that whatever Phil Penna, secretary of the association said was the truth. Mr. Penna's statement of the situation was: - "The operators association affirms the action of last Tuesday night, Aug. 11." In regard to the Vandalia's position he said he didn's know. However,
from the statements of the officials it would appear that the Vandalia company intends to carry out the order
of the association.
The Vandalia Coal company is the largest in the district and If it should
fail to carry out the order of the as
sociation regarding the collections the
miners would have a big point to
their credit.
The executive board of the mine
workers instructed the men to return
to work at the various shafts of the
Vandalia company today. Now, how
ever, they will probably be reinstruct
ed to await developments. The miners this morning, face the situation just where it was last Friday when the strike was started."

Mr. William Miles, late verger of
Rochester cathedral and the original of Mr. Tope In "Edwin Drood." was a great favorite with the late Dean Hole. On one anniversary of the verger's birthday, after a pleasant greeting, the dean asked: "How many children did your mother have?" "Oh, I am the eldest of twelve! replied Mr. Miles. , "Then." said the genial dean, "you never saw your youngest brother." "Oh, yes, I did!" answered Miles. "What! With ten miles between you?" said the dean chafflngly.
Quit Modest. "You took retainers from both husband and wife In this divorce case," said the court severely. "Your honor." said the accused attorney, "let me explain. I was first retained by the man." "No Impropriety in that." "Then, conscious that the husband had secured legal talent of such high order, I deemed It fair that the wife should have an equal show. Kansas City Newsbook.

All For nnRht. All these ''International conferences" to remove "causes" of war are futile. Wars arise from conflict of human desires. There will always be wars while desires conflict, until the millennium comes and we are angels. The impelling desire that brings together these universal peace conferences is chiefly social. The dreamers want a chance to tell their dreams to other dreamers. Men who find happiness in "prominence" want more prominence. So they gather and shake hands and make speeches and tell how happy the world will be when dreams come true. Chicago Inter Ocean.
The ideal food for hot weather. Whole wheat, made wholly digestible. Flaked and toasted, and flavored with maple syrup. It gives one the maximum nourishment and produces the minimum heat. Meat acts the other way. At least one meal a day, in summer, should consist of Mapl-FIake and fruit. Comfort and good health demand it. None of the fad foods can possibly take its place.
Mapl-FIake is whole wheat, prepared by a process requiring 96 hours. The wheat is steam-cooked for six hours.' Then it is cured for days a partial digestive process. Then each separate berry is flaked so thin that the full heat of our ovens can attack every atom. Then those thin flakes are toasted 30 minutes in a heat of 400 degrees.
Flaked foods can be prepared without all this expense prepared in one-fourth of the time. But that long process, and that fierce heat, are essential to perfect digestion. In no other way can the particles be separated so the digestive juices can get to them. The result is a food that's all food, because it all digests. The shorter process makes a half food a food that but half digests.
Then we cook out wheat in pure maple syrup, jnainly for the children's sake.
There is little use in making the best food i
children don't like it best. So we give it this enticing flavor the
delicious flavor that a cereal ever had. The result is, children want it as much as ytO want them to have it. You can't serve it too often ; they never get too much. One Package Free One package of Mapl-FIake will make yoa a convert forever. You will never go back to inferior foods after you once try this. So we offer to buy the first package ourselves, rather than have you delay. Please send us trus coupon now before you forget it. Povrer of a, Sonar. A pleasant incident happened at the Crystal palace when Mme. Albani was once singing the '"French rartridge." As soon as the concert was over one of the audience, a gentleman well known as a good shot and keen sportsman, called upon Mme. Albani aud said, "Madam, I am sorry to say that I have shot many a little Ted leg' in my time, but after hearing you sing that song I will never kill another," a deli cate compliment to a great singer -and to a song.
Fairview, Lincoln, Neb., Aug. 18. The most important happening at
Fairview yesterday was the emphatic denial given by W. J. Bryan to a story printed in Pittsburg this morning that he had "sold out" to the Kerr faction of the Pennsylvania democracy in order to accomplish the defeat of Col. James M. Guffe for national committeeman. The price alleged to figure
in the transaction was ?200,000 as a;
campaign contribution. The charge is said to have been made that Mr. Bryan "made good" but that Mr. Kerr, and his supporters had not come forward with the money.
Mr. Bryan declared that he had never
heard of the offer or agreement and he suggested that the proper persons to consult were the members of the committee on credentials, which decided the Pennsylvania contests. Mr. Bryan would not permit himself to be drawn into a further discussion with James Van Cleave, president of the Manufacturers' association, who came out in the press yesterday with additional reasons why the business men of the country should not support the democratic national ticket. This decision was based on the fact that Mr. Van Cleave had failed to defend his former contentions, but had shifted the discussion to other questions. Says Van Cleave Shifted. When his attention was called to the statement of James W. Van Cleave, president of the Manufacturers' Association, in which Mr. Van Cleave for the second time within a month sets forth reasons why the busi-
i ness men o( the country should not
vote for the democratic candidate. Mr. Bryan would not enter into any lengthy comment, but he charged Mr. Van Cleave with shifting the discussion to other questions instead of defending what he said before. "Mr. Van Cleave issued a statement appealing to business men to defeat the democratic ticket on account of the labor planks," said Mr. Bryan. "I replied to his appeal. Instead of defending what he said before he now attempts to shift the discussion to oth
er questions. It will not be necessary
to now answer what he says. I, shall during the present month discuss the questions which he lays especial emphasis upon the tariff question at Des Moines and the guaranty of bank deposits at Toneka."
