William Whyte, second vice president of the company, left Vancouver for Winnipeg, after issuing a statement denying that the Canadian Pacific was Importing strikebreakers from the United States. He said that under no circumstances would the company connive at any violation of the alien labor law. If many of the thousands of skilled and unemployed machinists in the United States voluntarily sought work In Canada, he added, that was their own affair'.

The Labor Department at Ottawa reports that at present no government Interference in the Canadian Pacific Railway strike Is contemplated. It is pointed out that, under the provisions of the Lemieux act"there can be no sympathetic strike of other unions until a grievance has first been stated and Inquiry has been made by a board of conciliation and investigation. This -would necessarily take some time.

Daughter of the President of France Marries Secretary.

York, Pa., Aug. 11. Eight men were killed, nearly a score more or less injured and thousands of dollars worth of property damaged by the explosion of a boiler in the York Rolling Mill late last evening.

The boiler, which was located in the center of the mill, exploded without a moment's notice, thousands of persons being attracted to the scene of the

shock.

ed. Ambulances from the York hospital

were hurried to the scene, but owing to the number of dead and Injured

delivery wagons and other conveyances were pressed into service. The heads and limbs of a majority of the killed were torn from their bodies, and they were so badly mangled that identification vas almost impossible. The mill had been closed about a week and two score of men were engaged in making repairs to an engine. When the explocion occurred not one of them was able to make his escape. The shock was terrific. The injured, many of whom were so black with smoke that they could not be recognized, are all expected to recover.

Paris, Aug. 11. As a sequence to the separation of church and state in Prance, and incidentally because of the mourning of the bridegroom, the marriage yesterday of Madeleine Anne Marc Fallieres, daughter of the president of the French republic, to John Jean Joseph Edward Lanes, the president's private secretary, was not attended with the special brilliancey which one might expect would embellish nuptials of the daughter of the president of France. Nevertheless, the function was a notable social event, for all France, irrespective of arnk or situation in life, showea a warm, genuine Interest, evidencing the sincere affection with which President Fallieres Is held by the people of France.
