MOST COMPLETE TIEUP IN HISTORY OF CANADIAN RAILWAY OPERATION IS NOW ON COMPANY TO STAND BY BOARD.
Winnipeg, Man., Aug. 6. Trade unionism in Canada has given its defy to the Canadian Pacific Railway. Without any untoward incident or ostentatious show, the mechanics and kindred workmen, Wednesday quit work, and all shop's, big and little, on this great system are idle. . It is estimated that 12,000 men went out, the largest number being 2,200 in Montreal and 1,500 here. Two thousand men left work between Ft. William and Vancouver. Even old workmen, In line for pensions, went home and it seems to be the most complete tie-up in the history of railway shops in Canada. Every wheel in the shops stopped and every fire died out when the whistle blew several Bhort blasts, caretakers and shop foremen alone being left to put the places in shape for the period of idleness bound to follow. Yesterday afternoon the men gathered at their halls to appoint committees to carry on the strike. It was decided not to appoint pickets at present. It is known, however, that the company has several hundred old c Mintry mechanics in "cold storage" -':o will be brought to the scene of .tion at once. Some are optimistic enough to believe that all will be over this week and the men back at work on Friday, relying upon the supposed capitulation of the company. The grievance of the Canadian Pacific men is that the finding of the board appointed at the request of the men should, in the company's opinion, be binding on the men. The Canadian Pacific not only did not seek arbitration, but, believing the board to be hostile to their interests, withdrew their representative, and the Government appointed another arbitrator to represent the company, who therefore was not officially accepted by the company. Despite these facts, t' " board Bo constituted gave a finding, which was accepted by the Canadian Pacific under protest. They claim that the men must be bound by the finding just cs they are, but they consider that the men's refusal strengthened their position, as the Canadian Pacific is not satisfied itself with the decision. t
BOARD'S AWARDS Will Be Upheld by the Railway Officials. Montreal, Aug. 6 The officials of the Canadian Pacific Railway refuse to make any statement beyond the declaration that they would stand by the award of the Board of Arbitration and Conciliation appointed under the Lemleux law to consider the matters In dispute between the company and their mechanics. There is but slight probability of Government intervention.

With Carr and Williams back In the game and Durham hurling In old time form, Indianapolis defeated the Brewers yesterday. It is to be supposed this victory will revive hope in the breasts of the fickle Hoosier fans and they will begin to shout "the greatest ever," whenever the team is mentioned. Those Indianapolis bugs are the limit. It would be hard to play a more evenly contested game than that between Cincinnati and the Giants of yesterday. Darkness stopped the game with the score a tie and the hits being eight and nine favoring the-Giants and the errors the same. When their team was -losing consistently on the home diamond the Indianapolis fans? began to pull for Columbus and Louisville to. win the pennant. Such 13 loyalty in a big city. An effort is to be made by the management of the Knutsford Park- track in Jamaica to secure -the racing dates that would have gone to New Orleans and Benning had not the law stopped It. Charlie Hickman joined Toledo yesterday and went into the game against St. Paul soon after arriving. He se cured a triple and helped win the game. The ex-Clevelander is good for many a long tussel. Wilson, of Minneapolis, held Columbus to three hits yesterday and his team mates secured Beven but Columbus won 1 to 0. It's hard luck. After Washington came Boston and both teams have been improving their average at the expense of the White Sox. The Louisville Riders will bear watching. That team 1b rapping the ball hard and not falling down before the tailenders. Stone for St. Louis secured three hits and two runs in the double header against New York yesterday. He is one of the best players in the outer gardens of the league. In the sec
ond game Pelty held the Highlanders to two hits. The Papke-Ketchell bout for Labor day is declared a certainty. Eli Cates returned to the firing line for Washington yesterday and four hits in two innings by Cleveland sent him to the stable. He had rejoined his team after attending the funeral of his mother at Greensfork. A home run by Cravens In the second inning, when the bases were full and two were down, featured the South Bend-Zanesville contest yesterday. The Central league is playing good ball this season. The same as usual an error came to the rescue of Detroit yesterday and the break of luck won the game for the Tigers. Spanish Queen won the $10,000 purse in the races at Kalamazoo yesterday. The time was slow as all the horses of which much had been expected proved very unsteady. In order to oust George Tebeau, the owner of the Louisville club, persons who are leaders of the fans in that city, have subscribed $35,000 to secure the controlling interest. Te beau's price for the entire stock is $50,000. Delehanty and Clymer have been suspended for their ungentlemanly remarks to Umpire O'Laughlln. It Is hard on Washington but will not count for much In the end. Henry Cartwright, a veteran English middleweight, who fought with bare knuckles before King Edward, when he was Prince of Wales is dead. He was known as the "fighting blacksmith." T. J. Hickey, ex-president of the American Association, has made an offer to George Lennon for the purchase of the St. Paul clab. The owner of the South Bend club will not buy the Grand Rapids franchise. Arnold asks too much money for the Wolverines and South Bend will not lose its franchise as had been expected in case the deal went through.
NO INFORMATION AS TO ATTEMPTED MURDER
Washington Knows Nothing of Attacks on Sultan.
Washington, Aug. 6. A cable dispatch from Ambassador Leishman at Constantinople came to the state department late yesterday afternoon. It related to a comparatively unimportant routine matter and made no mention of the reported attempt on the life of the Sultan on Monday night. No information has been received at the Turkish legation in this city In regard to the reported attempt on the Sultan's life nor is there any news at the legation bearing on the reported recall of Mohmed AH Bey, the minister at Washington.

FUNERAL TO BE SATURDAY.
Dubuque, la., Aug. 6. The funeral of the late Senator Allison will be held on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. It will be simple in the extreme. Brief services will be held at the residence of the dead senator. The Rev. J. T. Bergen, D. D., pastor of Westminster Presbyterian church, of which Senator Allison was a member, will officiate at the house and also at Linwood cemetery, where the burial will take place. The body will be In state on Friday afternoon and evening. Arrangements are under way for the suspension of business in the city during the time of the funeral. Flags are at half mast on all public buildings. Telegrams of sympathy are pouring in from public men in all parts of the country. Delegations representing the senate and the house will come to Dubuque to attend the funeral.

WRECK CREW OUT.
The wreck crew rras called to Greenville last evening to repair two freight cars that had broken down at that point last evening. The track was cleared and one of the passenger trains was delayed several minutes and the freight train was about an hour and a half late.

FIRST MAD DOG SCARE OF YEAR Spaniel Suffering With Indigestion is Killed. The first mad dog scare in Richmond was yesterday when Officer Cully was called into the yard in the rear of the William H. Dickinson drug store to end the life of a little water spaniel that was frothing at the mouth
and acting very strangely. Nobody had been bitten by the dog, although there had been several little children playing with it. The dog's owner is
unknown. L. C. Hoover noticed the
dog In the yard before it was killed and stated that he did not believe the dog had hydrophobia, but wa3 suffering from acute indigestion, a disease that Is very prevalent at this time of the year. For this reason tho head of the dog will not be sent to Indianapolis for examination.
