WHERE ROADS ARE IMPASSABLE FOR THE MACHINE, WESTCOTT WILL RUN HIS CAR ON RAILROAD TRACKS.
Harry Westcott, a well known resident of this city and a son of the late millionaire J. M. Westcott. left today for Dayton, from which city, he will start tomorrow on one of the oddest automobile tours ever made in. this country. He will use a StoddardDayton 45 horse power car which is so equipped that it can be run on railroad tracks. Mr. Westcott and a representative of the automobile company which made the car will be the only occupants of the machine and they plan to go at least as far west as Denver. Probably they will go to San Francisco. The roads in the far West are very poor, some of them so bad as to make automobile travel Impossible. This is particularly true in the mountain country, so the car has been especially made to operate on railroad tracks. While running on the rails the car will be able to make almost as good time as one of the trans-continental express trains. Last winter Mr. Westcott toured In a machine through Texas, New Mexico and elsewhere in the southwest. While in a small New Mexico town he thought of the plan of placing his car on railroad tracks. lie made measurements and discovered that by placing the necessary devices on the wheels of his car he would be able to successfully carry out his plan. . After doing this he obtained permission from the Southern Pacific railroad company to operate his car on its line. He traveled in this manner for several hundred miles and, he says, it is far ahead of ordinary road travel. There is no jolting and the car can be run at a high rate of speed. The machine he used on his southwestern tour was sold in Denver. The new car is perfectly equipped for the new method of automobile travel. Mr. Westcott and his companion will pass through Richmond tomorrow and go to Chicago by way of Indianapolis. Just what route they will take out of Chicago has not been determined. Mr. Westcott states that at the end of this tour he will sail for Japan and will probably go entirely around the world before returning to Richmond. He does not know how long he will be gone. MANY IMPROVEMENTS ON SCHOOL BUILDINGS Work Will Soon Be pleted. ComThe work in preparing the Richmond public school buildings for the opening of the fall term in September, is rapidly nearing completion. A large number of men are at present engaged in whitewashing, varnishing and washing the buildings so that they will be in the best possible condition. The work, of putting the new fire escape on the east side of the high school building will commence in a few days and when that work is completed the high school will be ready for opening of the fall term with ample fire protection. CONN WILL NOT RON FOR GOVERNOR Announced That He Will Not Sail Under Hearst Banner. Indianapolis, Ind., July 2S. The Elkhart Truth, owned by C. O. Conn, yesterday afternoon contained a statement from him that he will not accept the nomination for governor on. the Hearst Independent League ticket in Indiana. GRABBED SUPPORT IN HEADLONG FALL Miller Green Probably Saves Life by His Act.
When Howard Horney took his precipitous headlong plunge from the scaffolding at the Wayne Works yesterday, he was being assisted about the work by Miller Green, another painter. Green was thrown from the scaffold, but managed to catch a support with his hands and fell to the pavement a moment afterward, feet first. He did not believe himself to be injured at the time, but last night it developed his ankles were swollen badly and he was also injured about the hips as the result of the great force with which he struck the cement pavement. He is compelled to use crutches to walk upon. Horney is recovering rapidly from the effects of his fall and is not likely to suffer any permanent injury, although he struck upon his head after falling from the third story. GOVERNMENT WILL T FOR RIDERS Secret Service Men After Kentucky Outlaws. Frankfort, Ky., July 2S. Before the end of this week a number of secret service men of the United States government will be in Trigg and Caldwell counties to investigate the burning of the depots of the Illinois Central railroad company and the destruction of cars. It is stated here that the postal department at Washington has been notified that the burning of depots and bridges had Interfered with transportation of the mails and that the cases were those in which the government should take action. The government was requested last winter to send secret service men into Kentucky to investigate the sending of threatening letters through the mails, but the state government was notified that the cases as presented did not come under the jurisdiction of the postal department. AGAINST PROHIBITION AMENDMENT IN TEXAS Democratic Primary Returns Show This. Dallas, Texas, July 2S. Additional returns received account for about one half of the vote cast in last Saturday's democratic primaries. They make it certain that Governor Campbell has been renominated by a majority of about 75,000, and that Attorney-General Davidson has been renominated by a majority which may reach 2o.OOO. Returns so far show a majority against the proposition to submit a prohibition amendment, but the margin is so narrow that it will require a full count to determine what the result has been. All the congressmen who had opposition have been renominated, with the possible exception of S. B. Cooper, in the Sixth district. Story Against Wm. Brunton Not Believed by the Police. GIRL'S STORY ILLOGICAL. . The previous excellent reputation of the young man and the illogical story told by the girl, resulted in the dismissal of the charge of assault and battery against William Brunton, a well known young man. in city court this morning. The charge against Brunton was preferred by Minnie Smith, a domestic in a well known family on the west side. She is said to be feeble minded. Her., story was so evidently lacking in probability that the authorities did not see any reason for holding Brunton. The girl accused Brunton of abusing her. As Brunton tells the story he was walking on West Fifth street Sunday nght, when the girl came up to him and told him she was lost and asked him to take her to the place at which she is employed. He says he never had seen her before and believed her story. When near the house the girl uttered a cry of alarm and told her employer and neighbors she had been outraged. The girl was at police headquarters this morning and an investigation failed to substantiate her story In any way. Brunton is held to be innocent and the case against him was dismissed without ever coming to, trial. He is regarded as the victim of unfortunate circumstances. He bears a splendid reputation and is a member of a reputable family residing west of the city. INSPECTS HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING Board of Education and Supt. Mott in Indianapolis. Supt. T. A. Mott, M.
