Chcago, 111., July 25. American buildings may serve as models for Japan's new $12,000,000 house of parliament, according to Kametaro Hayashida, special envoy of the Mikado
who is now in this country preparing a report on our architecture, particularly as shown in Chicago, New York Washington and Sari Francisco. England, Germany, France, Italy and other European countries will be visited by Mr. Hayashida, but it is understood that the United States will have the preference when it comes to the selection of the architects to draw the plans and superintend the erection of the building. "There's a deep bond of sympathy betwen the Japanese people and the wh'e races of the West," said Mr. Hayashida. "Japanese
ideals and Intellectual sympathies are western rather than eastern. Our
people are nearer to the people of the west than they ever will be to the Chinese. We have patterned our constitution after the German constitution, our courts after the courts of France, and are considering building our house of parliament after the American style of architecture. Of the American fleet now on the Pacific we have been more anxious than for anything else to show how we can make evident our sincere feoling of friendship for this country by the welcome we will give the battleships when they arrive In Japanese waters." The Japanese enevoy will attend the international parliament in Berlin in September. This will be the first time that Japan has been represented in the in
ternational congress. Mr. Hayashadi while in this city specially noted the skyscrapers and steel constructed buildings with a view to determining the most effective type of construction to withstand the severe earthquake shocks prevalent in Japan.
Members of the denomination of Friends are being appealed to to cease the use of tobacco and to use their influence against it. The appeal is to be circulated and several Friends of prominence have signed. It is expected the attempt to interest mem
bers of th echurch will be made international. The London Friend states the reason for the appeal as follows: "We ourselves believe that smoking is both unnecessary and unnatural, and that in many cases is directly injurious. It is admitted by leading authorities that cigarette smoking by
boys is one of the causes of physical deterioration. "It may also be urged that the money expended on the habit which in some cases is considerable might be better employed. Instances have come under our notice in which the amount spent was badly needed for or
dinary family expenditure, or might well have ' been set aside for insurance or similar purposes. "Further the habit is often a cause of discomfort and annoyance to nonsmokers (including ladies) and in some cases tends to dull the finest feelings of courtesy and thoughtfulness for the comfort of others." The appeal goes on to speak of the influence which Friends may exert,
and the help they may tender others
who are attempting to overcome the tobacco habit.

Barney operates a threshing outfit and while moving from the Oliver Cook farm he stood in the way and one wheel of the separator passed over his foot mashing the toes. He could not run very fast In a solitical race now.

J. and Mrs. Mills. After a social time with singing and
music Elias Rogers, on behalf of the!
Monthly Meeting, presented them with an address in book form, beautifully illustrated and bound in Morocco. Dr. and Mrs. Mills have been nearly four years In Toronto and have endeared themselves to all, and there were many expressions of regret that they were leaving for another field
