Denver, Colo., June C. The coming .national Democratic convention promises to have more women in attendant th;tri any similar convention that has ever been held in the country. Colorado Is a woman suffrage state, to begin with, and women naturally take more part, in politics than in places where the right of suffrage is confined to men. Women have been selected on the reception committees and many of the important state delegations will be accompanied by huge numbers of the fair sex, the word having been passed along that all delegates are expected to bring their wives. A large number of the delegates who will attend the convention will bring their whole families with them to upend some time in the state, both before and after the convention. The many places of natunil beauty and the large number of summer hotels and mountain lodges will attract, hundreds of them for weeks during the month of July. Many Social Events. An attempt, will be made by the people of Denver to introduce many social events into the meeting of the delegates and visitors. There will be elaborate receptions to all the state idelegations iind nothing will be left undone to provide those who come with entertainment and amusement. The vast, new Auditorium will seat nearly 14,0(10 ami this will enable a large number of spectators to enjoy the proceedings of the convention. Special committees will look after the ladies while the delegates are in the convention and reception committees, appointed for each of the state delegations, will vie with each other to seo whose entertainment is the most elaborate and pleasurable. There will be a large amount of money spent in entertainment. The national committee hits received $100,000 from the city of Denver which Will help to pay the expenses of the convention proper and there will be an immense sum expended for special entertainment also. This will be by long odds the most, costly convention that has ever been held in America. Interest in the proceedings of the convention is increasing as the seventh day of July draws near. All the offices in the gift of the convention will be eagerly contested for and the rivalry over the highest honors bids fair to be keen in the extreme.

tested. A number of negroes have left here. Those remaining are keeping ijuiet, but manifest no disposition to be frightened. John Felkner, owner of the building In which they are Quartered, declines to eject Uis tenants and he says he will not put them out, even if the alternative is leveling the building to the ground with dynamite. There is a supposition that the night watchman could identify some of the marauders nf night before last, but so far he has withheld all definite information. When the marauders began shooting he wetn after the marshal and when they returned downtown, the assailants had tied. The citizens did not venture out until the shooting had ended.

driving into the country, when a collar came loose, letting the wagon tongue drop, and a runaway followed. Reason and Iverton jumped out, and Deverton's skull was fractured, causing death. Mr. Leverton was formerly a resident of Indianapolis, where he is well known in railway circles. He was a Pythian and a Red Man. and he leaves a wife and three small children.

Chicago society is stirred to its depths over the announcement of several of the "smart set" leaders that they are going to introduce into the Windy City the new 'directoire-' gown, the revival of which lias been causing a sensation even in gay Paris, where it made its debut before a startled world a few weeks ago. Advance notices of the new fashion have done nothing to allay the general alarm. The "directoire" gown is tight. -clinging tight. What is more it is slashed np the skirt on one side above the knee, disclosing trousers. Not the plebeian kind, of course, that mere man is accustomed to wear. No indeed. The directoire kind are made of blue satin and like the gown they

cling. but for all that they are unmis- i takably trousers. This may account j for the failure of several of these much

heralded costumes to make their appearance on schedule time. Dressmakers aver that they have made a large number this spring, yet the fact remains that to date, but one Chicago woman has had the fortitude to appear on the street in the new garb. Here is the description of her gown. "The costume, which is said to have been imported from Paris, is of "London smoke French cloth. It has a close fitting skirt, and is slashed on the rieht side, slightly above the knee, exposing bine satin trousers, which also are tight fittinsr. The whole effect is extremity light, form clinging. The trimming is blue with a lace jabot and lace cuffs. The buttons throughout are trimmed blue agate and gold, with double loops. Will Not Take Steps Against Railroads at Present.

Washington, June 6. The Department of Justice has agreed with the coal carrying railroads that the case involving the constitutionality of the commodity clause of the Hepburn act shall be hean before three Federal judges in Philadelphia on June 10th. No prosecutions will be begun until a decision of the court has been reached.
