PLANNED TO HAVE UNCLE JOE ARRESTED
Pittsburg Autoists Wanted to "Get Even."
rittsburg, Pa., June 4. "Uncle Joe" Cannon, speaker of the house of representatives, would have been arrested here had he attempted to move out of the city in his automobile, which did not bear a state license. Auto enthusiasts have been trying to have an act passed establishing a national licensing law. The house did not take kindly to it, and, as "Uncle Joe" was violating the law in not having a state tax when he drove into Pittsburg last evening, the autoists thought they would give him an object lesson and arrest him. But "Uncle Joe" left the city for Chicago by rail and the plot was foiled.

Cambridge City Guardian of Law for Many Years Steps Down and Out.
AN AGGRESSIVE OFFICER.
This is a picture of Mrs. Hum
phrey Ward, t',a noted English novel
1st. who has just returned home after
a trin to Canada and the United
States.
HE WAS KNOWN FAR AND WIDE
FOR HIS CRUSADE AGAINST AUTOISTS WHO BROKE ALL SPEED LAWS.
After three years of service as mar
shal of Cambridge City, Darnel Dns-
chel has resigned. The town board
has selected John McKee as Drischel's
successor. There is at least one class
of persons who will sigh with relief
when it becomes known generally that Drischel has thrown down the reins
of office. This class is composed of
the automobilists. To them Drischel j
has been a terror by day arid a cemon by night. This has been because of
he eagle eye he has maintained on 1
their movements through his baili
wick.
Drischel was an aggressive officer I
of the law and automobilists were his
pecial prey. He measured off the
distance between the Big Four railroad tracks and the west end of the
bridge in East Cambridge. As the
merry auto party sped along Main
street it was ignorant of the fact it was being timed. If the trip between the two points mentioned was made faster than the time allowed by Drischel as proper within the limitations of the law. the marshal hastened to a telephone, called East Germantown, Centervllle and Richmond and notified
the authorities to stop the auto and hold the occupants until he arrived.
Usually it fell to the lot of the local
police force to make the arrests. If
permission were granted locally, Drischel would pilot his rarty back to
Cambridge City, and there arraign his
captives before the squire.
For the first two years that he held
office, Drischel was held to be one of the most competent officers of the law in the county. He was called up'u frequently by the sheriff or local po
lice to make arrests. He showed ab
solute fearlessness in the face of danger and was always a man to be re
lied upon. During the past year, however, charges were made that Drischel was not always showing proper
precaution and forethought in the conduct of affairs of his office. Matters
came to a climax when an attempt was
made to induce a wagonsmith at East Germantown to overcharge a local
man for repairs made to a vehicle. The plan, was frustrated, however, and
there was no violation of law accom
plished because of the failure of the
alleged scheme and the fact the money was not secured. The town board of Cambridge City investigated the affairs of Drischel's office. It has not been given out whether the resignation was voluntary on the part of Drischel, or induced by suggestions from the town board.

But the Japanese housekeepers of my acquaintance rather resented my light attitude, assuring me, quite after the manner of housekeepers all over the world, that it is all very hard and requires much work oh. very much work indeed. Iu order to Justify my self to one housekeeper I drew a comparison of her own difficulties and those of an American woman, but the American picture seemed to her so terrible and she became so deeply sympathetic that I had to stop short to save bet feeUp&s. gouekeeEteTj . .

A President's ripe. General Jackson was a poor eater, and well for him that he was, or he would have often gone hungry on the days when large crowds came to the White House for a free lunch. It is relnted on one occasion the poor man was moved to thank the Almighty that after the crowd had gone there was a raw piece tt steak in the ice chest off which he could make a dinner. There seems to be absolutely no foundation for the stories of Jackson being a hard drinker, for his physical condition forbade all excesses. He liked his toddy in company with his corncob pipe, but he was no lover of all kinds of intoxicants. Home Magazine.
Safety Devices That Ar Opernted From the Bridge. It Is in its safety devices and the provision made to meet every possible accident that the ocean liner is perhaps most remarkable. All the machinery which may be set in motion in case of danger is centered on the bridge, and bo perfectly has it been a&ranged that the entire vessel could be controlled If the necessity should arise by means of a series of levers and push buttons. About the walls of the wheelhouse are
arranged curious looking indicators, much the same as one sees behind the desk of a great hotel. About them are hung a surprising variety of barometers, thermometers, thermostats, wind and rain gauges and other less familiar looking instruments. There are rows upon rows of buttons and levers on every hand, all highly polished and in the most perfect working order. The danger of fire at sea, for instance. Is anticipated by a thermostat connected with the frame filled with little squares like the hotel indicator. There are thermometers. In every part of the ship electrically connected with this box which are constantly on guard. If a fire should start In any part of the great ship the temperature would of course rise, and the fact would instantly be announced In the wheelhouse by the ringing of a bell, while a red light would flash at the same time in one of the squares of the Indicator. The man at the wheel could tell at a glance the exact point of danger Francis Arnold Collins in St. Nicholas.

Just before the ripening of the crop he posted watchers round the fields and issued notices that all persons stealing potatoes would be severely punished, the crop being intended for the tables of the king and nobles. Such delicacies, continued the notice, were too good for ignorant peasants, who would touch them at their peril. Of course watch was only kept during the day, and at night the fields were robbed right and left by the peasants, who were curious to taste the strange vegetable and jealous that It should be reserved for their betters. As soon as they had tasted the succulent tubers the pilferers were only too anxious to plant as many as they could possibly purchase, the wily Farmentier's scheme thus succeeding beyond the most extravagant anticipations.
