STORY OF TROUBLE MERE INVENTION

Bonaparte and Roosevelt Had No Difference, Says White House Report.

HAD PEACEFUL SESSION.

MEMBERS OF CABINET TALKED OF THE BRINGING OF THE SUIT AGAINST THE NEW YORK AND NEW HAVEN RAILROAD.

Washington. May 2?,. "The story is a mere invention. There was no difference whatever between the president and the attorney general over the New York and Now Haven suit," fcars a statement issued from the white

house today in regard to the published story that Secretary Bonaparte threatened to resign yesterday as a result of difference with the president over the bringing of a suit by the governient against the New York, New Haven and Har.tford railroad, for violations of the Sherman anti trust law. "There was no difference of opinion in the cabinet." the statement continues, "and not the slightest action or even discussion of any kind between the cabinet officers and the president or between the cabinet officers themselves. The suit in question was determined on some two months ago. The only question discussed yesterday was as to whether it should be brought." It was understood today that President Charles S. Mellin. of the New York, and New Haven road had come to Washington for the purpose of taking up with some government official the petition which was filed in Boston yesterday. Mr. Mellin. however, did not call at the White House.

SAY THEY WILL BOARD THE MONITOR TO BE PLACED UNDER HEAVY BOTVIBARDMENT BY A SISTER CRAFT.

Washington, May 23. There will be the closest imitation of a real naval battle ever known in the waters of Chesapeake Bay some day next week, when the new monitor Florida will be attacked by her sister monitor, the Arkansas and Btibjected to a vigorous bombardment by heavy guns and torpedoes. As a result of the experiment the navy department expects to learn the effect of a bombardment on the interior fittings and other portion of the ships structure. These are the same in the Florida as in the newest battleships and the information would be doubly valuable. Whatever damage the Florida receives will be easily repaired and will in no way impair her future usefulness. A remarkable feature of the plan is the fever to volunteer for service on the Florida during the bombardment. Offers to man the monitor have come from all parts of the country but the navy department has decided to allow no one on boanl durins the severe tests. The sensational experiment will be witnessed by prominent naval officers, members of the cabinet and in all likelihood by President Roosevelt. The Florida will be stationary over shoal water so that if sunk she can be easily raised. A special military mast of steel rods has been constructed to be the target for smaller guns. Two twelve inch guns will be fired against the turret of the monitor and two torpedoes launched against her, one at each side.

Agreement Reached With Operators.

Kansas City, May 23. Thirty -five thousand coal miners of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, members of the United Mine Workers of America, who have been on a strike since March 1 last, will return to work next week. The convention of minors of these States here ratified and signed the agreement reached by the joint subcommittee of the miners and operators. Trices and conditions are to remain the same as they were last year. There are a few minor points yet to be settled, but they are not of sufficient importance to delay reaching a final agreement. In the reaching of the agreement and the practical settlement of differences between the miners and operators in these districts, T. L. Lewis, national president of the miners, has taken an active hand. He will now return to Indianapolis.
