Hattiesburg, Miss.. May 15. Officers of thsee states, Georgia, Arkaa

eas andiMississippi. have been called upon to take up the pursuit of Sam Rhodes, an itinerant photographer and fanner, who, with an army rifle across his lap. is flying across the Southern States, carrying off seventeen-year-old Emma Thomas, whom he has kidnaped and holds in captivity, having deserted his wife and three children back in Georgia, lie has been pursued for some distance

through the country, but he has been "able to keep ahead or to double back on his pursuers. A large reward has "been offered for his capture. On April 1 Emma Thomas, the daughter of a neighbor, disappeared, and it was several days after that before it was discovered that she had been carried off forcibly by Rhodes. The couple have been seen several times and they have invariably occupied the same position, the girl sitting behind the man, who drives along with his rifle across 'his knees, a double precaution to prevent the girl from escaping and to defend himself against pursuers.

TAKEN UNDER ADVISEMENT.

Rushville, Ind., May lo. County Attorney Gates Sexton, who was appointed by Judge Will M. Sparks of the

Rush Circuit court, to defend Leslie

Bundrant, charged with the murder of

Charles Coleman several weeks ago, is

asking a new trial for his client on the grounds of an unfair verdict. Bundrant was sentenced by a jury last Monday to be hung after he had entered a plea of guilty. The case was called to trial and a jury impaneled. Bundrant. directed his attorney to enter a plea of guilty. Judge Sparks then instructed the jury to find the defendant guilty and recommended a sentence of life imprisonment. The jury, however, after being out one and one-half hours and balloting eight times, returned a verdict of guilt and fixed the penalty at death. In his motion for a new trial Attorney Sexton contends that the. verdict as returned by the jury is contrary to law,' that the sentence was imposed on insufficient evidence, and that the sentence was contrary to an implies! agreement that if Bundrant pleaded

guilty he would be given a life sentence. Judge Sparks has the motion under advisement.
