FLURRY CAUSED BY J REQUEST Delegate to M. E. Conference Wants to Know of Book Concern's Finances.
LOSS FOR BOTH ALLEGED.
THEREFORE IT IS PROBABLE THAT UNIFICATION OF TWO METHODIST HOUSES WILL BE CONSIDERED FAVORABLY.
Baltimore, May 14. At the Methodist Episcopal general conference here the sitting was occupied chiefly with the hearing of reports of Bishops in the foreign fields. Bishop Earl Cranston, resident bishop of Washington, read his report on the union of the various Methodist churches in Japan. Bishop I. B. Scott, the only colored bishop, made his report of the work of the church in Africa, especially in Liberia. A commission was appointed to consider
means or increasing tne salaries 01 me pastors. A flurry about the book concerns, which promises to develop as the sessions grow, and the question of a unification of the New York and Western
publishing houses conies up for settlement, was caused by the introduction of a motion by B. L. Paine, of Nebraska, calling for a detailed account
of the finances and business of the
two houses. In the preamble the resolution stated that the book depositories had been run at a loss for some years past; that it was believed "the book depository plan has long since passed its period of usefulness and necessity."
He also stated that it was probable
the body would be asked to start another depository.
These statements aroused Dr.
George P. Mains, of the New York
book concern, who stated that the book concerns had not been run at a loss. On a point of order Bishop Spellmyer, who presided, cut the dobate short, and put the question of referring it to the comm'ttee on book concerns to a vote, which carried.
Rev. John Handley, of New Jersey,
made an ineffectual attempt to have passed by the conference a resolution
providing for the nominating of pre
siding elders by annual conferences. This matter is now before the commit
tee on itinerancy, which will, it is expected, recommend that the bishops
continue to appoint the presiding elders, but that hereafter they shall make
their selections from lists of three nominees for each presiding eldership these nominations to be made by the annual conferences by ballot. It is planned to have the general conference adjourn not later than May 29.
THE CITY NEWS IN BRIEF
Is Your Kitchen Clean? Greasy floors and oilcloths can only be cleaned properly by the use of pure soap. The cheap yellow kind which is filled with rosin, only makes a scum over the dirt. Easy Task is different, because it is made from borax, cocoanut oil and tallow. It dissolves the dirt and leaves everything sweet, and it costs 5c.

WAITON THE PENNSY Railroad Expected to Take a Step in Interchange Case Soon.
WILL THEN TAKE ACTION.
R. K. Shiveley of the firm of Shive-
ley & Shiveley, attorneys for the In-' diana Railroad commission in the lo-' cal freight interchange case, states ! that it was probable that the Penn-1 sylvania Railroad would within a short time file its brief of appeal in the supreme court of the state. This;
appeal is taken from the decision of the railroad commission in ordering the interchange of freight in Richmond between the Pennsylvania and the C. C. & L. About four months ago the Pennsylvania company filed notice of its appeal. As soon as the railroad company's brief is filed in the supreme court the railroad commission will file its brief.

NO FARM PRODUCE EXHIBIT THIS YEAR
Only One Such Event Been Held.

No exhibit of farm produce will be
made by the pupils of the district schools this year. One such exhibit was held a few years ago and it proved very satisfactory. Prizes were offered and the school children took deep interest. It was suggested at the time that the affairs be made annual and a number of the township trustees believed the plan to be advisable. It seems to have been lost sight of, however, and to have become merely a matter of history.
