TICKETS UNDER LOCK AND KEY
No Mail Orders for Republican Convention Tickets Filled.
DEMAND UNPRECEDENTED.
CHAIRMAN NEW THINKS THAT IT IS DUE TO UNIVERSAL INTEREST THAT IS BEING TAKEN IN POLITICAL GAMES THIS YEAR.
Chicago, 111., May 14. Harry S. New, republican national chairman, wishes to announce to the world that the ticket windows for the big show will Hot be opened until 48 hours before the doors of the Coliseum are opened. Until then the tickets will rest in a safety deposit box, and no mail orders rill be filled. The fortunate persons who secure .amission to the convention will get their tickets from the. National committeeman of the state from which they come. No tickets will be given tut from the National committee head
quarters. "The person who gets tickets will have to come to Chicago for them," taid Mr. New, "and they will have to get them from their National committeeman. The sooner this is undertood the better. It's going to be the biggest crush in the party's history. " By locking up the tickets and keeping them under key until just before the convention opens the National committee hopes to be able to prevent forgeries. The demand has been unprecedented and indicates that the republicans of the country believe the 15)08 convention as a spectacle will be worth traveling from the furthest end of the country to see. Mr. New and Secretary Dover have been at a loss to understand the reasons for the great rush for admission, but have come to the conclusion that it is indicative of the tremendous interest which has been aroused by the campaign and of the general belief that the fight for the nomination will reach its climax in the convention itself.

INDICTMENTS RETURNED.
Pittsburg, Pa.. May 14. Alleging that rich men of Pittsburg and vicinity within the last few years have been bunkoed out of not less than $l,O0,000 by card sharps. District Attorney Harry Goehring, of this city, acting in conjunction with District Attorney Jerome, of New York, has opened his batteries and the greatest gambling sensation in years is now promised. Quietly yesterday afternoon Goehring had rushed through the grand indictments against Frank T. Thompson and F. B. Ranger, of Pittsburg and New York, alleging that they conspired to defraud D. C. Davis, a rich banker of Marietta, Ohio, out of immense sums of money. The defrauding is alleged to have taken place through a crooked card game in a New York resort more than a year ago. Though this is not a new charge it opens up a line of attack and sensations galore are promised. The quiet announcement. that Thompson and Ranger had been indicted caused the greatest consternation among gamblers when it was made known here this morninig. Goehring declares that, ho has scores of names and amounts showing that hundreds of thousands of dollars have gone into the maw of the gamblers and he is simply using the case of Davis as an opening wedge.

Indianapolis, Ind., May 14. In a report filed with the war department at Washington, giving his side of the controversy between the advocates of the use of Bedford stone and granite for the proposed Tippecanoe Battlefield monument, Governor Hanly stated that he had appointed a special commission to examine the Soldiers' and Sailors' monument here. This monument is one of the handsomest in the world, but Governor Hanley's expert says that it is deteriorating under the influence of the weather. Word was received here tonight that the governor has gained his point, and that granite will be used for the Tippecanoe monument.
