Are You Superstitious? There's a prevailing superstition among housewives that laundry soap to lie used must, be yellow. Never was there a greater mistake. It has "been repeatedly demonstrated that the soap most harnib-ss to flesh and fabric, yet deadly to dirt and grease, is a white ;-,oan called Easy Task. One five-cent cake will convince yon.
DRIVEN TO DRINK
Harry Miller Says He Was Discouraged and Had a Bad Case of "The Blues."
HE LEAVES THE CITY.
TMseouragement has driven Harry Miller to drink. That, is the way he
explains it and lie is very much afflicted bv "the blues." He was released from the county jail yesterday morning and last nU'ht was rearrested on the charge of public intoxication. He plead earnestly for a chance to leave the city and this morning in city court Jude Converse granted the request. Miller appears to be "spotted." He claimed lie was sealed in a North Kighth street livery stable and causing no disturbance, when arrested. He was not in a public place. In telling his story Miller asserted he is not a drinking man. He said he was out of money but "F.ud Lally" bought the drinks for him yesterday. The man said he considered walking
to Eaton yesterday but the condition of his shoe soles was such he was afraid they would not stand the trip. He offered the court an opportunity to inspect his shops in order to add the weight of evidence to his favor.
The judge told him to take chances I with his shocs and not to tarry within the city limits. Miller said he would
go to Hamilton, ()., where he thinks he can find work.

A winking, blinking, happy old moon broke from behind ominous clouds last night ami smiled down upon the hundreds of people who attended the opening of the Druid'.- .lain Markt in Beallview park. His blink, his wink and his smile were in perfect accord with the occasion, for it was a happy crowd that was on the sce:r The myriads of rkctric lights, brilliantly illuminating the beautiful fronts of the many shows, lended added enchantment to the scene. I'p and down the midway the large crowd surged. Formality was cast to the four winds. Everybody was everybody's friend and a!! joined together in having a good time, typically characteristic of occasions of this kind. The shows were a'" good and were accorded a most libera patronage. There were no rowdh and in fact everything moved off wi; a smoothness surprising. Va lie county has one show- and on exhibit on the grounds. Bucks!- i Ben will open his wild west show which is of meritorious character, to night. The high winds of last nigh, made it next to impossible to keep t Inside walls of the large arena erect and it was decided earlier in the evening not to attempt a performance. This feature of thf carnival alone promises to attract much interest. The second Vane county feature is Indiana Chief, an ox which weighs 1,3:0 pounds and which was raised on the farm of Elias Mitchel, west of Fountain City. The animal is by far the largest that has ever been shown in Richmond and is a center of attraction. The animal is four years and four months old. The animal show is better than it was last year, by far. Diana, Samson, and Arizona all drew large and appreciative audiences during the evening. Although some of the shows arc moving pictures, the films have never before been shown in the city. They are exceedingly good. La Rose's Electric Fountain, which was shown in Richmond last year was unable to show last night for the same reason that Buckskin Ren was unable to give his performance, but this beau
tiful spectacle will be. presented tonight. Allen's Ti oubadors, a company composed of twelve colored people, entertained hundreds of people. This performance is one of the best on the
grounds, although it is with temerity one praises one show over another. The street car service to the carnival grounds last night was regrettably poor, but as there were numerous hacks and other conveyances the crowds were handled to and from the park with but little trouble. With its hundreds of good features and with Richmond carnival crazy just now. it is very probable that recordbreaking crowds will be in attendance during the remainder of the week. The management of the Robinson shows is courteous and the public is handled in

INVESTIGATION WELCOMED.
His Prayer. O'Connell had got a man off at one time for highway robbery and at another for burglary, but on a third occasion, for stealing a coasting brig, the task of hoodwinking the jury seemed too great for even his powers of cajolery. However, he made out that the crime was committed on the high seas and obtained an acquittal. The prisoner lifted up his hands and eyes to heaven and exclaimed. "May the Lord long spare you. Mr. O'Connell, to me!" Argonaut.
At the meeting of th Commercial club last ( veiling Mayor Pehillingr, and V. P. O'Neal, of the- hoard of public works, stated the 1ooks of themunicipal electric light plant are open for inspection and may be seen by local citizens at any time. They stated an investigation ahv.ys is welcome.! There has been some considerable comment on this subject of late and the board of works refused to accede to a request to have the b.oks examined by an expert as suggested by the Light, Heat aj;d Power company, competitor of the city's plant.
