RECORD FOR THE YEAR.
Indianapolis. 1ml. , May . Smiles were plentiful yesterday anout. the offi
ces of the Indiana Anti-baioon League in the Claypool Huildin. The officials of the league have just compiled figures which show that 1S8 saloons will fro out of business during the May term of the various county commissioners' courts in Indiana if the remonstrances that have been filed are held good. With the 188 which may be ousted this month the total number of dram shops for the first five months or 1908 to ro out of business will be 591. Anti-Saloon League officials say they are particularly well pleased with this showing, inasmuch as during the entire twelve months of 1907 there were but few more than 600 saloons ousted. The 188 saloons which will go out if the remonstrances are held good are: Gary, 1 "0; Brownsville, 2; Laurel. 5; Tippecanoe. 2; Niles Township in Delaware County, 1; Portland, 18; Montpelier, 9; Hartford City, 19; Valparaiso, 2. Four citiws and three counties have joined the "dry" list thus far this year. The cities are Montpelier, Valparaiso, Hartford City and Portland. The counties which have joined the "drys" are Blackford, Union and Crawford.

Didn't Know Poe. The editor of a New York magazine told me reoeutly that to test the equipment of the employees of his establishment he passed among, them a typewritten manuscript of one of Toe's stories, bearing the title and name of the author. It looked as if It had just been submitted for publication. An opinion regarding the literary merits of the manuscript was solicited from the mail clerks and stenographers of the publishing plant. Forty young people made reply. None of them recognized the name of Poe. but all of them had opinions to express, the majority concluding that the story was not up to the literary standards of the magazine. Uncle Remus' Magazine.
