Jackson. May 2. It is reported that peveral cotton mill managers in Mississippi are to make a test of the McDowell ehild labor law, enacted at the recent: session of the Mississippi legislature and becoming effective Oct. 1st. The attack on the law will lie made on the ground that it is in the nature of class legislation and is, therefore, unconstitutional.

Hartford City. Ind., May 2. The temperance forces late last night ended a lone fiirht against the saloons
with victory, winning in every ward in this city and Montpelier, which places the entire County of Blackford with its four townships in the dry list. The riling of blanket remonstrances at 11:30 last night with the. county auditor was the signal for a, great demonstration in the Court. House, where several hundred citizens had gathered to await, the announcement of the result. The ringing of church bells gave the first information that
1 lie anti-saloon forces had been victorious, and headed by a band, the temperance people, several hundred strong, inarched to the Court House, where a prayer and song service was hebi. The majorities of (lie temperance forces ranged from seven in the Third Ward to forty-seven in the First Ward.
Chicago. May 2. Hundreds of Illi
nois saloons went our or uusmes rnday a the result of the local option elections held April 7 and April 21. Liquor stocks everywhere were being disjxed of at bargain pales. and in some of the cities wild orgies resulted. The auctioneer's hammer in many insiances wa-s followed by the carpenter's hammer, as the saloons were speedily transformed into drug stores, shooting galleries, ice cream parlors and allnight restaurants. Meanwhile municipalities, which had planned how to ex vend the customary funds from licenses, hastily revised their plans and abandoned numerous enterprises. Unless they can devise some new source of revenue, the passing of the a loon will also witness a halt in building of sidewalks and other city improvements and along with the saloon will go hundreds of village marshals and other
peace olticers, whose omcial existence was due to the saloon.

London. May 2. Mr. Mackenzie j King, deputy minister of labor for
Canada, atter passing some timo in London in consultation with the home authorities on the subject of Indian migration into Rritish Columbia and other territories, has completed bis mission, and there is a good deal of speculation concerning the measure of his success. It is commonly reuoited that a satisfactory solution of
the problem has been found. It is taken for granted that there will be no legislation on the subject, of emigration from India, but that, administrative measures will be taken to discourage Indians from emigrating to a country where the climate and conditions of labor are so unsuitable to men of the class which has been invading Uritish Columbia.

NET WILL PROTECT COUNTRY'S BATTLESHIPS
Successful Test Held in ragansett Bay.
Nar-
Washington," May 2. A successful demonstration of a steel net that will protect warships from torpedo assaults was held in Narragansett Bay recently. Battleships are to be equipped with the nets at once, and
' the cruisers and other vessels as rapJ idly as possible. The resistance of j the nets to Whitehead torpedoes was regarded as sufficient demonstration l of their utility. One of the torpedo i nets was taken to the testing ground.
It was held suspended by two launches and the torpero boat Marris was used for the demonstration. Running at
! full speed, the torpedo boat fired a j Whitehead torpedo within eight hun- ' dred yards of the net at a speed of j thirty knots. The torpedo struck the j net. rebounded and glanced away
from the steel-meshed obstruction.
His Way of Putting It. Paul "Louis Courier, when bitterly assailed by a French professor, quietly remarked: "I fancy he must be vexed. He calls me Jacobin, rebel, plagiarist, thief, poisoner, forger, leper, madman, impostor, calumniator, libeler. a horrible, filthy, grimacing ragpicker. I gather what he wants to say. He means that he and T are not of the same opinion, and this is his only way of putting it."
