Robert Parker, the Remington. lnd.) bank wrecker, came to Renn.selaer after he had been to St. Intis, where he said farewell to his wife and family, and two hours and twenty-four minutes after his arrival was on his way to Michigan City to serve a term of from two to fourteen years for embezzlement. He pleaded guilty to each of the six indictments. There were few traces in Parker's face of the ordeal of parting with his family when he appeared before Judge Hanly. As each indictment was read he gasped almost inaudibly, and then regained his composure. The bank of Remington closed its doors Dee. 7, l'.M7. and at first the suspension was thought by friends ot barker to be only temporary, but State Auditor Billheimer and P.ank Examiner Hinshaw made revelations. The examiner discovered that Parker had kept two sets of books, one exhibiting a part of the transactions of the hank that looked to-be all right, and the other showrng the transactions that seemed to be a little uncertain of passing the approval of the examiner when he came around. There is Biblical proof of the fact that gloves have been worn 3,000 years. The first mention of them is made in the book of Ruth. WOMEN AGITATE THE "BOOZE CURE" Petition Presented to Marion County Commissioners. Indianapolis. Ind.. April 2.".. A petition has been presented to the County commissioners of the local Council of Women for the establishment of a "booze cure" at the workhouse. The I petition is signed by l,Mto persons.' many of whom are prominent in the social and commercial life of Indianap-j olis. They declare that a m-ajority of the inmates or. tne workhouse are sent there because of drunkenness or crimes committed while under the influence of liquor, and say that conditions could be made better by having the inmates treated for the liquor habit. The commissioners say they favor the plan, but the county is without funds to carry it out. Test For Hydrochloric Acid. A curious mishap stave us a very delicate test fer hydrochloric acid in the atmosphere. In a north of England locality many houses have curtains of the cream color produced by metanil yellow, popuiarly known as "dolly" cream dye and to science as "the sodium salt of meta-amido-benzlue sulphonic aeid-azo-dtphenyl-arnine.'' Some of these cream colored curtains suddenly changed to heliotrope. Investigation showed that an accidental escape of hydrochloric acid from a neighboring alkali plaut had discolored the curtains, and the dye became a most useful test. An Episode In Court. "You are charged with snatching a womau's pocketbtmk." "I know it. judge. But I wouldn't do such a thing, hungry and broke as I am." "Too conscientious, 1 suppose?" "No. I don't pretend that. But why should I snatch a womau's pocketbook? What would I wr.nt with a couple of car tickets, a powder rag, a piece of chewiug gum aud a dressmaker's address?" April 2",. Philander C. Knox, senator from Pennsylvania and j former attorney-general of the I'nited States, addressed the Civic Forum in' Carnegie Hall last night. A vast audience listened with interest to hist scholarly address on "The People, the Railroads and the National Authority." Senator Knox traced the history of the great interstate railroads and showed that they have been the wards and beneficiaries of the federal govj eminent; that from the beginning state I control over them has been progressi ively lessened and national control has progressively increased to a point where the last vestige of local authority, except in matters comparatively unimportant and local in their bearings, has been swept aside and the national power has been declared paramount. Chinese language. Difference Between the Written Characters and Speech. The diaiects or languages of the Chinese empire are very numerous and dissimilar. Thus a Chinese speaking the dialect of the Kwangtung (Canton) province is not understood by a Chinese residing in the neighboring province of Fukien. The language or dialect spoken nt Shanghai would be quit strange to the people residing at Tekin. ! Written characters of Chinese are, j however, understood and recognized by sight throughout the w-hole empire i iu the same manner as our Arabic numerals 1, 2. 3. 4, etc., are recognized by the eye throughout Europe. But aa these numerals when pronounced or read have entirely different sounds attached to them in England, France, Germany, Italy, etc., so the Chinese written characters are spoken in totally different words aud sounds in the several provinces of China, with, however, the important exception that the mandarin language is spoken or understood more or less throughout three-fourths of China or, roughly speaking, in nearly ail the provinces north and west of the river Yangtze. The language known as Wen-ll is the medium by which the classical books of China have been handed down. It is par excellence the written language of China, but it is-not generally understood by the great mass of the people. The spoken language viz. Mandarinmay also be written, and there is a good deal of colloquial literature la Mandarin. Versions of the Bible in the local patois have also been produced in several districts of the southeast, where the dialects are very numerous and diverse. In the Chlnse written language there are over 4(T,000 dlstiact characters or symbols, and this vast cumber is being constantly Increased by the addition of new characters to represent new scientific words and nsoderu ideas. Although the Chinese are considered a literary people and have naturally a desire for education, yet owing to the extreme difSctilty of mastering th? Chinese characters it is estimated that only one in ten of the population can rd or w ri t. Coutmporary Eariaw.

Taft of Cincinnati and Frank H. TOMB OF THE MINGS. It It a Riky Place Fop a Traveler to Visit Alone. Every traveler in China goes to the tomb of the Mings if he stays more than a few days in Shanghai. The Chinese consider the Mings the greatest rulers of the ancient kingdom, and they rank second only to Confucius. The tomb is composed of two colossal figures facing each other and elaborately carved in the style affected by Chinese artists centuries ago. Seen in Central nark or Versailles they would look grotesque enough, but standing as j they do among bleak and lonely hills, outlined against the clear blue oriental j sky, they have a rude grandeur and ; imposing simplicity which make them! seem fit guardians of imperial dust. It is not an easy journey the tourist must take if he wishes to pay his respects to the stone giants, nor is It a trip advisable for a woman to undertake, as It lies through a region where hatred of the "white devils" is considered as much a part of the Chinaman's religion as the worship of his ancestors. A donkey and a guide are necessary, and It is also wise to get a parly of sightseers together for the excursion if possible and to go well armed, for once a foolhardy traveler started forth alone from the hotel on the Bubbling Well road, Shanghai, to visit the tomb of the Mings, and he was never heard of again. There are many places in the p ;rlieus of Shanghai even where It Is imprudent for a white man to venture alone in broad daylight. An extra donkey Is also needed to carry provisions as well as the cameras, for most tourists want a picture of the towering images which have so successfully withstood the wear of the centuries. New York Press. Odd North German Custom. In northern Germany a familiar fig' ure of th rural districts is a quaint old gentleman whose hat Is very much i decorated with flowers and particolored ribbons and who carries a staff j to the top of which is tied a hug? j bunch of renl or artificial flowers knot- ! ted to it by long streamers of similar ribbons. According to the district, his costume also is old fashioned and unusual in other ways. He is the "hoehzellbitler," or person employed among the country folk to go from house to house ami invite guests to attend a wedding. He delivers himself of a set speech in an old "Piatt Doutsch" rhyme when be arrives at each place, accompanying it with wagging of the head and stamping of the staff, and is generally in rather a jovial condition by the time his day's labors are ended. Miltort-'s Retort. John Milton was not a wit, yet he is reported to have made a crushing reply to a question from Charles II. "Do you not think." said the king, "that your blindness Is a judgment on you for having written in justification of my father's murder?" "Sir," replied the poet, "it Is true I have lost my eyesight, but if all the calamitous providences are to be regarded as divine judgments your majesty should remember that your father lost his bead " Hn. nr.., ;old r,rK' Mmial Flour pleases tli cook.
