As to the native country of the peanut the opinions of botanists are divided between Africa and America. The peanut crop in the United States alone amounts to over 3O0.0O0,OOO bushels.

The marriage laws promulgated in all the. Catholic churches in the world for the last three weeks are now in effect. The salient points of these lavvs. as already published, are that the Catholic church does not presume jurisdiction over non-Catholics. That whereas marriage between a Catholic and a non-Catholic, both being baptized, was formerly valid, it is not after Easter. Marriages solemnized between two Catholics before a Squire or other civil magistrate was also valid before Easter, but is not now. The most important feature of the new laws is that a betrothal is binding upon the contracting parties, and unless dissolved by mutual consent either party can hold the other, and no priest is permitted to marry either one to another. The object of this law is to protect the woman in the case.
