LAFOLUTTE HOLDS CENTER OF STAGE
Has Not Been in the Background Since He Entered United States Senate.
A PICTURESQUE FIGURE.
HE IS SO CONSIDERED BY HIS ENEMIES BECAUSE OF HIS VARYING MOODS AND STAND ON DIFFERENT QUESTIONS.
"Washington. I. C, April 11. "That tnan La Kollette" is occupying; the Center of the- stage in Washing1 on thpse flays. He has not boon in the background at any time Kinoe he came Ho the Senate two years ao. and it is rot, likely that he figures on obscurity for the four years ho has yet to serve. After that. well, that's a long way Jnto the future. He is a strong man Jn his State and the people may want Jiim to return to Washington. Senator La Toilette is a unique man. frhere are no others like him in Con-
ftress. He is a partisan Flptjhlican. j
"who generally voles wjtn me uemocrata. after bitterly harranguing his rwn party. To many ho is a radical. Tint, according to his own vieiws, he is p conservative more so than the majority of men in Congress. Senator Ia Kollette has confllence in himself, which probably accounts for his fearJeBsness. With the government employes 1here is no more popular man in "Washington than La Kollette. Willi the Senators, there is no more unpopular. There is no luke warm opinion of La Folk-tie. Kveryone is either Jor him or against him. and both crowds are in dead earnest about their sentiments. Trust is placed in him to the very limit ; then, on the other hand, he is distrusted. It depends upon which faction one speaks of. in giving praise or criticising. One side has it that, he is i patriot, untarnished, unselfish, with the good of the country only at heart. The other side says he is a demagogue and argues loud in support of their contentions. One thing is certain La Folletle is always interesting. Kven his enemies regard him as a picturesque figure, a jieculiar mind, and a personality that Must, be reckoned with, not ignored, lie always gets an audience in the galleries, and he never speaks unless he ilrives some of the members of his own party from the chamber. He is always looked upon as being loaded for the man who ventures- to nag him, r accidentally ruffles his feelings. 'On the floor he is a thunderbolt, in private conversation he is mild mannered villi a winning smile that, makes him ii good "mixer" one who makes friends as quickly off the platform ns lie does upon it. La Kollette is a peculiar, interesting man.

Truth and Quality appeal to the Well-informed in every walk of life and are essential to permanent success and creditable standing. Accoringly, it is not claimed that Syrup of l-'igs and Elixir of Senna is the only remedy of known value, but one of many reasons why it is the best of personal and family laxatives is the fact that it cleanses, sweetens and relieves the internal organs on which it acts without any debilitating aftereffects and without having to increase the quantity from time to time. It acts pleasantly and naturally and truly as a laxative, and its component parts are known to and approved by physicians, :w it is free from all objectionable substances. To get its beneficial effects always purchase the genuine manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co., only, and for sale by all leading drug gists.

THEATRICAL CALENDAR.
NEW PHILLIPS. Week of April 13 Vaudeville. GENNETT. Week of April 13. North Bros. Will Present "Divorcons." One of the greatest New York and London successes of last season will be presented by North Bros., comedians, during their cimam im-nt at the Oennett for one week with usual matinees, commencing Tuesday. This great success is Victoricn Sardou's celebrated French comedy, "Divorcons." It is a French comedy, pure and simple, and is brimful of coniiy and laughable situations from the rise to the fall of the curtain, and is entirely different from anything ever seen in this city, at popular prices. It is true, as is the case in nearly all plays translated from the French, that there is more or less suggestive during the progress of the play, and being ''fit ten by such a clever author as Sardou. he has gone just so far with the lines, and it is left with the audience to imagine the rest. However, the play is absolutely clean throughout and not a vulgar word or movement in the entire play that would mar the feelings of the most fastidious. Miss Goodwin has an exceptionally pleasing role in the play and one that is admirably suited to her style of acting, and is given ample opportunity of displaying her ability as an exceptionally clever and versatile artist. It is said that her conception of the role compares very favorably with that of Grace George, who is now touring the country, playing large cities only.
Washington. I). C. April 11. "Noth
ing would be contemplated with great- : er complacency by the European powj f is than a war between the I'nited
States and Japan." So tays Former Comptroller of the Currency A. R Hepburn, who was in Washington a
! few days ago. "A taxing of the js-irength and wasting of the resources
of these two countries, without involving the powers of Europe, would k nd to restore thfir relative power and precedence in the council of nations." Mr. Hepburn explained that the I'nited iriates is not liked by the continental powers. Our growing importance as a naval and military power most disturbs Kurope. It disturbs t ho international balance of power as it heretofore existed and upon which
i their diplomacy has been based. .lapan is not liked for a similar reason, i With Japan, the powers are particu- ' larly concerned. Iler prestige as a i tiaval and military power and her -lm-I lish alliance have brought the Mikado's
count y to the lront m the family ot nations. It calls it halt in territorial acquisition in the Far Fast and from now on is likely to mark a recession in
English influence in Asia. The "v
low peril." that loomed so great before tile Russo-Japanese war still stalks the continent of Kurope. although it is no longer political to proclaim the same.
Mr. Hepburn is certain that never more apparent thai thr friend the I'nited States has whole of Europe is England.
