RIOTING LAST EVENING.

"Washington, D. C, April R. Next Friday the republicans of Massachusetts will hold their state convention, and there promises to be a lively contest over the question whether or not. the delegates at large to the national convention Khali be instructed for Secretary Taft. Singularly enough Senator Lodge and his son-in-law, Representative Gardner, will be arrayed against each other in this fight. Idge oes not favor instructions, while Gardner is an earnest advocate of the proposition. The senator has given out a statement in which he says it. would be best not to insist on the passage of resolutions of instructions, and his son-in-law announces his intention 1o press such resolutions. In his Statement the senator says: "At the present time my one desire is. as it has been from the beginning, to maintain harmony and good feeling in the republican putty of Massachusetts. Personally, I have no opposition to any resolution which the stale convention might see fit to pass, but I think that in the interest of the party and of cordial union and harmony among republicans, and out of deference to those who feel that resolutions would be to them a cause of embarrassment, it would be much better and wiser not to offer or press any such resolutions in the convention." As soon as Mr. Lodge's statement v.-as shown to Representative Gardner, he made the following statement: "I am sorry Senator Ixxlge has taken a position against Taft resolutions in the convention. I hope he will not oppose them actively. His assistance would have, been invaluable in our effort to carry them, but we must get along as best we can without the co-operation of either senator. So far as injury to the party is concerned, the only thing -likely to cause injury to the republican party in Massachusetts is the feeling that the proceedings at the state convention are likely to be cut and dried beforehand, and that the undoubted preference of the state for Mr. Taft, is not to be given expression."'

The Two Bacons. Roger Bacon. 1214-94. known as the "miraoulous doctor," was a very remarkable man, 300 years ahead of his time. In fact, his mind was more modern than that of Francis Bacon, who lived three and a half centuries later. He was probably the inventor of gunpowder; he knew that there were different kinds of gases; he predicted steamboats and railroads; he constructs lenses and burniug glasses and was ucquaiutcd with the theory of the telescope. If he did not actually construct one. In an age of unusual iguorance and superstition he stood for keeu, systematic thinking. In opposition to the spirit of his time he sought to divert the interest of his contemporaries from scholastic substitutes to study of nature. Lisbon, April 8. l.'nawed by the strong military force with which the city has swarmed since the election rioting on Sunday evening, and the heavy arrival of troops from the provinces, the population of Lisbon uade fresh demonstrations last evening. In the outlying districts they paraded, shouted and jeered the soldiers and sang revolutionary airs until dispersed by the troops. Two hundred arrests were made, and it is officially announced that more than 000 arrests were madeVm Sunday and Monday. Premier Ferreira has given out a statement to the public in which he says that order must be preserved, and that the Government is prepared to adopt the most stringent measures to insure public peace and safety.

THOSE WHO HAVE NEITHER GAS NOR ELECTRICITY WILL BE ABLE TO SECURE GOOD LIGHTS AT SMALL COST.

Think of it, all of you farmers atid residents of the rural districts where the electric; light does not grow and the gas pressure does not become effective in your direction - Dr. Wiley, chief chemist of the agricultural department, is maturing plans to teach farmers how to make denatured alcohol, and make it so cheaply it may be used for illuminating purposes. ManyWayne county farmers are students anxious to learn everything new that is of benefit to them and they will be sure to take hold of the opportunity to acquire this knowledge. Next August Dr. Wiley proposes to erect a still at the bureau of chemistry and operate it himself for two or three months, producing denatured alcohol daily from damaged fruits and vegetable substance such as can be had cheaply in the market. Denatured alcohol is an excellent fuel and makes fine light. As it can be manufactured from waste, the farmers ought, to avail themselves of the

new law permitting it, to be made I without imposing a revenue tax. In time, no doubt, stills will be set at all ; agricultural colleges and schools established to train students in the intrij cacies of business under competent ! chemists. When they learn how,

fanners will be making this fuel just as they do cider in the fall.

The Bet Man.

During the old days of Sweden there J

were several best men. and the term was applied In Its full literal sense. The duty of the best men in those times was to defend the groom and his prospective bride from a rival, who, accompanied by several retainers, was sure to appear while the wedding processiou was on Its way to church and make a stubborn fight for possession of the woman. The Scandinavian warrior considered it beneath his dignity to court a maiden's favor by gallantry and submission and, therefore, generally preferred to wait until she was ou her way to be married to another man, when the attempt was made to carry her off by main strength. It was then that the best men if they were the best men came into good play; hence the custom is still preserved in "best"' man of today.

Lynn. Mass., April R. A suit for ' SH," ,00 , filed in the Essex County Su- j perior court in Salem, late Tuesday ! afternoon, by John S. Donohue, of this ; city, against Thomas W. Lawson, of: Boston, has aroused widespread inter- : c.A. The suit is for special services , alleged to have been performed by Mr. , Donohue as confidential agent to I-aw- t

son, and many ot them cover some oi the biggest deals in the history of finance. That most sensational developments will be brought out when the case comes to trial is likely. The suit comes as a surprise to even the nearest acquaintances of the two persons, who have long regarded Mr. Donohue as the closest friend of the copper king and one of the few who knew the real Lawson. It was not even known among some of their closest friends that there had been an estrangement between them. Mr. Donohue himself, his friends say, is at a loss to explain the attitude which Lawson has assumed lately, and which has caused the break between them. The Inner Circle. Those familiar with the situation look forward to the developments which the suit promises to bring out as something in the nature of an expose, and Mr. Donohue himself is authority for the statement that before the legal proceedings are finished thousands of persons who regard Iawson as a brilliant and intensely interesting enigma, will have considerable light thrown on the charming inner circle which the author of "Frenzied Finance" treads. In an interview last night. Mr. Donohue said: "I will say that the special services in the declaration cover period of 11' years. I might also say, in way of explanation, that when I became associated with Lawson, it was agreed that there should be no salary, as I would bo more useful to him if he were in a position to say, as he did on the witness stand, that I was not in his employ." Mr. Donohue also says he. arranged various meetings for Mr. Lawson with United States Senator Clark, of Montana; Addicks, of Delaware, -nd Augustus Heinz, of Montana; that he took part in stock deals for Iawson, conducted a news bureau in Iawson's interest, and acted as "capper" and "tout" in stock transactions and other speculations. Some of the Allegations. These are some of the things Donohue alleged against Mr. Lawson in the papers in his action: That Laweon was the "angel" for certain theatrical ventures.

That Lawson botght a part interest j

from Colonel Mann in the notorious Town Topics of New York, to stop that publication from attacking him. That Lawson had secret meetings with certain persons in a furnished room place in New York.

That Lawson (through Donohue) got

District Attorney John B. Moran. of Boston, to break up a stockholders' meeting in New York. Donohue is a Lynn politician and business man. He is reputed to be rich. He is connected with the millionaire Dennox family of Ivnn, and had been, in Lawson's employ about

years, probably being more inti-

New York, April S. -That an agreement has been reached among the relatives of Madame Anna Gould to interpose no further objections to her engagement to the Prince rie Sagan was reported today. The pertinacity of the prince, who recently announced that he would forego his plan to return to Faris this week, and the insistence of Madame Could upon her right to decide for herself are said to have broken down the opposition to the engagement so that all except George. Gould have fomented to it. The latter is the custodian of his sister's property.
