PRISONERS SHOT TO DEATH AT NIGHT

Political Enemies of Haytien Government Meet a Sad End.

UNREST PREVAILS YET.

SECOND UPRISING HAS GIVEN THE GOVERNMENT AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEARCH ALL QUARTERS IN SEARCH OF SUSPECTS.

Port Au Prince, April 2. The spirit of uncertainty and of unrest still prevails here. The recent abortiye attempt at a second uprising in which General Larraque, chief of the cavalry and several other army officers are alleged to have been implicated, has given the government a cause for searching all quarters of the city in the hope of finding others suspected of being involved. The French Minister to Hayti, M. Carteron. has recently shown considerable alarm concerning the action the Haytien government may take against the refugees now asylumed in the French legation. Some of the refugees themselves say that the minister has advised them to procure pistols and as much ammunition as possible, so that they may be prepared to defend their lives. There are rumors here that summary executions continue in the nearby country districts. For a long time past the government had a large number of so-called political prisoners in hand, and it is reported that almost nightly some of these are taken from (he prisons, transported to the country districts not very remote from the city and shot. This the government vehemently denies.

' i The formal action came Wednesday ' after persistently repeated denials, by both husband and wife, that a divorce ; or separation was in contemplation. ; That it was in close prospect, however, i

I was known as long ago as last Wednes i day.
