Magdalena, March 31. Rear Admiral Charles S. Sperry, who will succeed
to the command of the Atlantic battle fleet July 1, at San Francisco after , Rear Admirals Evans and Thomas i have been relieved, will retain the Con- j necticut as his flagship for the worldgirdling trip from the Golden Gate. Ad-, miral Sperry now commands the fourth division of the fleet and his flag floats ' from the peak of the Alabama. Almi-,
i ral Sperry enjoys the distinction of
never having been seriously ill during
the 40 years of service in the navy. He has been on active duty all these years w ith the exception of a year, and ten months which represents the total of his leave of absence. Speaking of the trip to Japan, Australia, the Philippines and on through
the Suez canal to New York, Almiral j Sperry declared that it presented no great natural difficulties. "It is just; like the cruise we are now finishing, only more of it," he said. "All this talk about the great difficulty and ' danger of navigating the Straits of ' Magellan is amusing. There is noth-!
ing to it at all. It was the simplest thing in the world, and the cruise ahead presents nothing more difficult. Coaling stations are plentiful and supply depots are abundant."

NEW PHILLIPS. Week of March 30 Vaudeville.
Vaudeville at the Phillips. No one who goes to tho vaudeville at the New Phillips this week will have reason to complain of tho bill that is being offered patrons of the house. It Is a lively one throughout and appeared to give entire satisfaction to the audience that attended Monday night; a much larger audience than might reasonably have been expected, considering the very disagreeable weather. The Four Franks head the program with their farce comedy, entitled "A Mixed Affair," a
production that affords opportunities for comedy situations and some solos and quartets. The Franks are already known to patrons of the New Phillips end they received a cordial welcome after an absence of some months. Mark Johnson, comedy trick cyclist, is wirffout doubt one of the best in this line ever appearing at the New Phillips. West and Benton, singers and Bancers, are genuine specimens of the refined vaudeville entertainers and the former gives an imitation of Primrose, the minstrel man, that is very clever. Charles Harris, character comedian, has an unusual stunt in which his overwhelming homely maketip cuts an important part He concludes with a representation of '"The Old Time Girl." The illustrated song, as sung by Mr. Cook this week, is "I Long to See You Once Again" and the xnotlon pictures are entitled "A Corsican's Daughter" and "The Lost Umbrella. There will be a souvenir matinee for the ladies on Wednesday and a special matinee for the children on Baturday. Saturday night the usual double Nil will be given.

FISHERMEN GALORE ALONGJHITEWATER School Boys Now Make River Banks Playgrounds.
If there were no other indications, the long line of fishermen that maybe seen along the banks of the Whitewater river eai afternoon is a sure sign that spring has come. Notice the youngsters, as soon as they are released from school in the afternoon. The mamma-wont-let-me-go-to-the-river boys, play marbles or ball, but the others tie themselves to the bank of the stream and there tempt the finny tribe to give up its life. A large number of suckers have been caught below the Main street dam but other varieties are scarce. The frequent high waters this spring have not helped fishing to any great extent. The high water brings down so much sewage that fish can find plenty to eat without searching for baited hooks and accepting the risk offered by their tempting morsel6.

In response to popular demand, the school board of Fort Wayne has decid-. ed to conduct a night school for persons between the ages of fifteen and thirty. It has been suggested often that the local school board operate a night school, but the matter never has received serious consideration by the school board. The undertaking at Fort. Wayne is in the nature of an ex-! periment. and its continuance and en-' largement will depend upon the attendance. But one teacher w ill he employed and all the branches will be taught, so that children, who are employed during the daylight hours, may have the same advantages they would enjoy in the graded schools.
