Riding in the cab of the motorman of an electric railroad Interurban car as it speeds along the roadside or across a corn field, up hill and down, across streams and around short, sharp curves, one experiences all the thrills and even some more than are to be obtained by a similar trip in the cab of a steam locomotive. The motorman must possess, nerve, coolness and the ability to think and act promptly in probably a greater degree than is demanded of his brother on the steam road. His track crosses many more roads, it passes through numerous downtown streets, he must make constant stops of his car but keep up to the schedule, no matter how much time is lost for stops. Mis

car does not follow along a right of way nearly as private as that of the steam road and often It boarders upon a township road or pike. When passing through towns along the route his car must be under control at every moment and he has more to watch out for. Think of a locomotive engineer wondering how long it will take that truck wagon to get off the track or if that woman with the baby buggy ever will stop using the company's right of way as a short cut to her neighbor's home. As trolley roads are now operated, they differ very little from steam roads, save that the motorman, has but one car, or two at the greatest, under his control, instead of a long train. He maintains the same speed, observes the same signals, receives the same sort of orders, faces the same dangers as does the locomotive engineer and he has just as complicated mechanisms to control, and just as precious lives to safeguard. In some respects a motorman must be even more wary than an engineer. His car moves along with less noise than does a train, his compressed air whistle does not carry warning so far ahead and his tracks run closer to highways and probably cross them more times than does a steam road. In addition, cars are probably more frequent on the electric road than are trains on a steam road, and f-3 the trolley lines usually have but a single track, the motorman must keep his wits about him to avoid dangerous collisions. Headlight is Safeguard. In one safety appliance in particular, however, the electric car is the peer of any other public conveyance, and that is in its headlight. Modern genius has made the electric headlight a beacon that brilliantly illuminates the track for a great distance ahead and sends warning lo the trespasser

or persons crossing the tracks that danger is approaching. It is the headlight, also, that forms the fascination to the novice In the

! cab, for the view ahead, a fascination j which is shared and which is never i lost by the car driver. Ahead gleams the bolt of brilliancy, transforming the gloom immediately at hand into brightest day and rendering the night ; beyond and to the sfdes the darker : because of the contrast.

At terrific speed the revolving wheels eat. up the space, as it were even pushing the night backward and gathering up the stretches within the confines of the liglit rays. A painted arm or pole flashes into view for a second and the motorman sounds shrill blasts with his whistle. The arm disappears and ahead a green light gleams low beside the track, objects pop into view ahead between the rails which the uminitiated one would take oath were human forms. Shivers creep up one's spine as one thinks of the honor, should the object prove to be a human, but one hates to feel creepy with the motorman sitting grim and silent in the dim light of the compartment, and one feels greatly relieved when the object is dispelled under the glare of tiit headlight, proving to have been only a shadow cast by a '.ree. Succession of Thrillers. Suddenly the form of a man does loom up. He trudges along on the ties, ignorant of the approach of a flying demon behind him. Then one does quake. The motorman merely places his foot on the air valve and the whistle sounds quick and sharp Distance and speed are hard for a "green one" to judge in the cab of ;i car or a locomotive. The man doesn't move. He doesn't look around He apparently does not hear. It i maddening. "Will he not move?" oik asks himself. The situation become

tense. Finally, however, when it ap pears that the car is about to lean up

on him. the pedestrian steps to one

side, walks down the slope and coolly awaits the coming of the car, which, in reality, is still some distance away, j Then a curve bobs up. It is right ahead, one thinks. The speed doesn't slacken. Surely no car can run that bend at such a speed and keep the rails, one imagines. Again one unconsciously turns to the motorman. He knows his track and he knows when to check his speed so as to lose no more time than necessary. When, to the tenderfoot, so to speak, it appears that derailment on the curve and subsequent death are inevitable, the car driver suddenly shuts off the current and a moment later tlie coach rides the rails as smoothly as a yacht cuts the water under a stiff breeze. Real Tragedies Nightly. A night ride in the front of a trolley ear is nothing if not exciting every minute of the time. One thumps at the thought of the consequences were the swaying coach to leave the rails and one thumps when next a bright light apparently the headlight of a car appears ahead, seemingly in the center of the track. The motorman sits unmoved at his levers and still the light approaches at sickening speed. It must be upon us in a moment, it appears, but just as one makes ready to leap, if necessary, the light jumps to the side of the track. It wai merely a lamp gleaming at the windows of a farm house along the road.. Real tragedies, however, are nightly experiences of the motorman. A moving object comes into view in the track. It moves, then stops as if in fear. The car is upon it and one recognizes it as a rabbit. Then the cowcatcher, in plain view in front, passes over the hapless bunny and he disappears from sight. "Get him?" the motorman is asked. "Just depends on whether he jumped up so the cow-catcher could get him back of the neck or whether he tried to run out under the wheels at the side. If he stood still he is all right. We kill dozens of them. Run over one or two every night."
