It may be that legal proceedings will have to be resorted to by the county treasurer in order to collect raxes on property that was owned by the Pittsburg Steel company at its branch warehouse in this city two years ago. The company has refused to pay the taxes assessed against it and not only alleges the tax is too high but charges the officers Here not notified. The matter has been referred to Ernest Finley, the local rep
resentative of the company and he has held conferences with the local authorities in the effort to bring about an adjustment. In 90j, the Pittsburg Steel company conducted a branch warehouse at the plant of the old handle factory West Second street and the Panhandle railroad. A large business was operated and the quantity of material that was kept stored at the place was the largest of the kind ever stored in this city. The company supplied orders received for its wares from this vicinity from the local warehouse. The business was large, but when a consolidation was agreed upon the local business was abandoned. The stock of the company was placed on the tax duplicates at a valuation of $25,000. This value is not regarded as having been excessive by any but the steel company. The county assessor notified the officials of the company at the offices at Pittsburg and sent them notice of their assessment. Instruction was given, also, that if there were
any eaueyuous to tne valuation, a representative of the company could appear before the board of review and show reason why a reduction should be mads. The company paid no attention to the request of the as
sessor and permitted the tax to become delinquent. Treasurer Myrick has been endeavoring for some time to bring about the collection of the tax. The com-
pany refuses to pay, alleging the as
sessment was too high and it looks as if the only recourse of the county is to be found in the courts. The company officials allege their stock ha been removed from the jurisdiction of the local taxing authorities and the county cannot substantiate its claim. It is held that if the warehouse contained property worth $25,000 at the time the assessor paid his visit it was very unusual and merely a case of "happen so." To repudiate any such assertions the taxing authorities assert the assessor called at the warehouse and asked the representative in charge to place a value on the stock. He refused and the assessor was left with no alternative other than to place a value according to his own estimate of the probable worth.
