A" LAW OF THE DESERT.
Wltb W(.r and Food rrcr, Kw treme Marri Are Warranted. It was in the ramp of Bullfrog that VitcheU, the big brick red mining man of Nevada, told me his view of law cm the deert: "If you are prospecting with an unreasonable hog of a partner who wanta to eat. three slices of bacon and half a loaf of bread for breakfast and lots the canteen gurgle down his throat while you get along with a strip of bacon and just moisten jour lips when yoti.take a drink, then you're all right If ycni kill him. I'd kill him if there wasn't anything else to do. It' a tough game, and it's your life or his when you're lost or your grub stake nd waster are giving out." Thesetobservatlons are suggested by the arrfcral In camp two days before ef the bone of a prospector who had died of thirst some forty miles from Pullfrog during the previous summer, lie had been a carpenter, earning wages-of ?8 a day in the new camps during the "boom," but the gold fever led him away from this safe and profitable toil. lie picked up a partner, they loaded their burros and trailed off south toward the reath valley country to prospect in the Funeral range. Three weeks after the desert swallowed them up the partner wandered into a freighters' camp, half crazed with thirst and exhaustion. He was able to tell the freighters that the carpenter was somewhere out beyond, lost and without water, too helpless to move. The partner was too weak and fevered to go back with the rescue party of freighters, so they left him In camp. He directed them as well as he could, but the search was bootless, and Griffln, the carpenter of Bullfrog, was added to the long list of desert victims. Several months later a party of prospectors tumbled by chance across what was left of him. There were no traces of his outfit. He had thrown away his gun, his canteen and fcis hat. One shoe was found thirty feet from his body, and he had torn off and flung away most of bis clothing. These were the ghastly evidences of the last great fight he had made to truggle on. "When they're dying for water," said Mitchell, who knows the "desert ame," "they throw away everything until all their clothes are gone, and fan generally find them without a titch on." Ralph D. Paine in Outing. Alwiyn In Season. When Hiram Bassert went down on Cape Ood to pay a visit his friends provided him with every sort of fish they could muster, and for five days he was trented to mackerel, halibut, oysters, clams, scallops and many other varieties in the best possible condition. "Well. Hiram." said his host on the day of Mr. Bassett's return to his home, "I'd like to see what you'll get Hannah to cook for you first thing when you reach home. I reckon you've had fish enough to last you for one while." 'PoohT' said Mr. Bassett. "I guess you don't know anything about it. You haven't lived in Massachusetts (ong enough. Hannah '11 get me the came thing she always does when I've been away from home for a spell a real good mess o codfish an potato hash. That's what Hannah '11 get me." MUCH MONEY LOST 81 UNCLE SAMUEL This Is the Reason for Strict Observance of Eight Hour Law. Washington, March 2;,'. In 1SSS con gress provided by law that eight hours should constitute a day's work for letter carriers iu cities or postal districts, and that if any carrier was employed a greater number of hours than eight he should bo paid extra in proportion to his salary. In ISO'S there were on file more than 4,XM over-time claims, ag gregating; over $ir,O,0O, and over time was accumulating at the rate of $"jryMNH per annum. Five years had passed since the enactment of the eight-hour law. and the appropriations had been especially increased to en able the department to meet the requirements of that law, yet there had been no appreciable decrease in tho annual accumulation of overtime. POINTED PARAGRAPHS. What happy lives farmers lead in story looks. Never judge a man by the opinion he has of himself. A dozen men may make a club, but one woman can make a home. When a man borrows trouble he puts np his peace of mind as collateral. Men and women should look during courtship and overlook after marriage. Happiness has a peculiar way of appearing and disappearing unexpectedly. It's an easy matter to sympathize with the poor when your pockets are empty. Try to be agreeable. There are too many disagreeable people in the world as it is. It's so hard for some men to save money when single that they don't think it worth while trying after they marry. What a man and his wife say to their guests and what they say about them after their departure are different, quite different. Chicago News. Wisdom of the Ancient. To the ancients for wisdom! Dr. Tinches at the University college in London brought out in a lecture some advice of general interest given by a certain little known king of the Assyrians. On one of the monuments In the British museum is the following inscription: "The eggs of an owl given for three days in wine bring on a drunkard's weariness. The dried lung of sheep taken beforehand drives away drunkenness. The ashes of a swallow's beak ground up with myrrh and sprinkled in the wine which is drunk will make secure from drunkenness. Horus. king of the Assyrians, found this out." The convivial monarch did not drink in vain if he "found these tilings out." I'nttlns Out a Fire. When trying to put out a fire remember that one gallon of water at the bottom of the blaze will do more i to put it out than ten gallons at the; top. "Tlay low" is the motto to follow i while fighting tire. A few gallons at : the bottom of the flames will rise in clouds of steam when the fire is rising and quench it. A big blaze on the lee-, ward side looks fearful, but play low; with the water on the bottom of the fre oti the windward side and you have the speediest way to quench the flames and will not. require a river. John Detchner, aged 21 years, serving two years in the penitcntiara.v here for a robbery committed at Louisville, all but becamo Kentucky's "Monte Christo." The stumbling block was another convict, who "snitched" to the guards. Warden K. L. Iludd was notified that Detchner had hidden himself in a sack and at that very moment probably was being carried beyond the prison confines. A sprint to the gate was made, and the outgoing wagons bearing sacks of shoe leather from the penitentiary factory were, halted. Snugly reposing in one o the receptacles was Detchner In his hand was clenched a knife with which to slit the sack that he might escape when the proper moment came. Detchner snarled like a lynx when he was discovered, and swore that be would murder the convict who informed against him. ADDRESS FRENCH SENATE. Parisian Protestants Suggest Plan for Devolution of Ecclesiastical Property. Paris, March 2:!. A group of Parisian Protestants, for tho most. part, opponents of advance republican polities and also of the separation law. have addressed a petition to tho French senate directing attention to what they call a serious infringement, of the fundamental principles of law in certain provisions of tho bill for the devolution of ecclesiastical property now before that chamber. They consider it their duty to urge the senate not to associate itself with a "veritable iniquity." Tho petitioners declare that t'ae senate cannot sanction the confiscation of the property left for masses "to assure the repose of the souls of the dead, without profoundly affecting all those who believe in the efficacy of prayers for the dead." RACE FOR GOVERNOR IS ABOUT SETTLED This Week Watson and Miller Will Know Where They Stand. DANIEL G. REID STORY AGAIN CIRCULATED. Watson's Denial That He Is Trying to Secure Beveridge's Seat Seems to Avail Him Nothing. Indianapolis, Ind., March The race for the republican nomination for governor will be settled withiu Ihe present, week. At least two of the candidates - Congressman James F. Watsou, of Kushville, and Charles W. Miller of Goshen--seem to feel that it is all over now in their favor but the shouting. Win. I,. Taylor, the Indianapolis candidate, is very confident that he is right in the running, and that he will be nominated. Lieutenant Governor Hugh Th. Miller's followers declare that, he has the most, enviable position, and that, there will be a deadlock hetween Watson and the Goshen Miller that will give him an opportunity to land at. tho head of the ticket. There does not seem to be much doubt, .however, but that a majority of the party workers are picking Watson to win. At least it is generally conceded that, he will go into the convention stronger than either of his opponents, with a fair chance of being nominated on the first, or second ballot. Captain .lohn K. Gowdy. who is looking after Watson's interests, is still confident that. Watson will be nominated on the. first ballot. He says that he has the enthusiastic kind of support that counts, and that his showing will be a surprise n his opponents. There is no doubt, but. that it. has been the game of the Goshen Miller and Taylor to combine their forces in many counties during the last month in hopes of electing delegates who will not vote for Watson at tiny time. Their plan has been to stem the popular tide in Watson's favor in hopes of preventing his nomination ou the first, or second roll call. Whether or not this combination will exist, during the convention is not known. Taylor's lieutenants declare that they didn'e have a combination in Indianapolis with Miller, but that, on the contrary, the only trouble they had here in electing delegates was with Miller's friends, who wanted to select men who would vote with them on the second ballot. The fact that he has been regarded from the start as the leading candidate has caused Watson to be the target for ihe other candidates. The methods that have been used against him in many localities are as unique as they are unfair, according to the views of his lieutenants. The latter say that tho day before the primaries at Ft. Wayne last week some of the managers of the Goshen Miller and Taylor heid a meeting of Methodist ministers, at which the ministers were informed that Watson is a very bad man. At the tame time others engaged in the management of the campaign of the Goshen Miller and Taylor were making the rounds of the saloons, telling that Watson is the Hanly candidate, and that Hanly is the arch enemy of the saloons. That night Watson's opponents sent ,",.! circular letters through the mails at Ft. Wayne, declaring that if Watson is elected governor he will go after Senator Be eridce's seat in the senate, or that he will back Dan Keid. the NewYork millionaire, for the place. Only a few hours before the letters were sent out Watson stated publicly in a Ft. Wayne newspaper that ha. will' not be a candidate for the senate against Senator Beveridge, and that he has nothing whatever to do with Dan Roid's political plans, if he has any. !:at Keid has nothing to do with him.
