MADE BY LABOR

Riddick Hired "Unfair" Contractors to Build Platform To Embarrass Labor.

OTHER REASONS GIVEN.

CLAIM RIDDICK KNEW DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES COULD NOT BE ENDORSED HANDILY ON NON-UNION BUILT PLATFORM.

Members of the grievance committee of the Central Labor Union of Indianapolis have raised objection to the building of the platform in Tomlinson JIall on which the republican and democratic state candidates are to be nominated, iy J. S. Schumacher and Com

pany. This firm is on the "unfair" . list. The contract for the work was let by Carl W. Riddick. secretary of the republican committee, who had divided up the work of preparing Tomlinson hall for the two conventions with Secretary Heiley, of the democratic committee. The union men allege that the contract was let to unfair labor in order to embarrass organized laoor in the campaign. Fearful that the republican candidate will not be endorsed, the objectors say Riddick has endeavored to make it impossible for union men to endorse the democratic candidate. lie figures, they say, that organized labor can not endorse a democratic candidate nominated on a platform built by unfair labor. Secretary Riddick's Statement. Schumacher & Co., have built the platforms for several years, but have employed nonunion labor in the last two years. Secretary Riddick today made the following statement: "The Schumacher contractors have erected the bleacher seats for the state convention for several years, and no criticism has been offered. The lumber for the raised scats they keep on

hand all cut out and ready for use. and w ithout purchase of new material have only to set up the seats. For that reason they are able to take the job at probably less than half what it would cost If the material had to be furnished and cut out from new stuff.

The greatest economy is practiced in making the Pathfinder Cigars. The manufacturers grow all of their own tobacco, except the Sumatra wrapper; own their own box factory; do all their own printing; make their own advertising matter; own. their plantation's and warehouses in Cuba. Connecticut and Ohio; own the different buildings which they occupy. Three men compose the firm and it is not a corporation; therefore no dividends to pay on "watered stock." They cannot be put out of business unless the consumer should cease to be his own judge of a good cigar.

STERLING HAS CITY OF HAMELIN BEATEN

Rats Chewed $1,097 in Paper Bills.

Sterling, 111., March 21 Talk about Hamelln and its rats! Sterling has the old town, made famous in rhyme, beaten to a standstill on the rodent question. At least, when it comes to the value of the pests. There are or rather there were eleven rats in this town that cost the man who harbored them just $97 apiece. That man is E. A. FreadhofT. proprietor of a saloon. He killed the animals and has entered the sum of $1,097 on the debit side of his profit and loss account. The rats made their nest in a space behind the cash drawer in Freadhoff's saloon. One night they got into the money drawer and chewed up a roll of bills containing $1,097. Next day they were killed.
