ANOTHER EVIDENCE OF JUDGE BARNARD'S WEAKNESS. The Shelbyville Republican is responsible for the fitatement that Wallace K. Deem, editor of the Knightstown Banner, a Henry county publication, is against th candidacy of Judge Jiarnard of that county for congress, and has offered to bet that Barnard docs not have a solid delegation from hi.s own county. If this i.s true, it add.s the last and strongest blow to the tottering Mrength of Judge liarnurd's campaign. Coming, as it does on top of the deserved defeat, administered to the judge last Monday in his attempt, to pack Mr. Campbell's delegation in this comity with pro-Barnard men. it places before the district more prominently than ever the great weakness the republican party would have to shoulder were Judge Barnard its nominee. Many reports have come out of Henry county recently about the unexpected activity and enthusiasm of the democrats there. It is more than likely that. Henry county democrats realize how Judge Barnard would weaken the republican party in this district, as its nominee and are preparing to take advantage of it, if offered, not only in the district campaign, but also in the state and national campaigns. The republican party may well be likened to a gigantic chain and. with this in mind, it i.s well to remember that no chain is stronger than its weakest link. The links of the republican party chain are made up of Its candidates for office from president down to the smallest county or township office. The calibre and qualifications of the various men chosen by the party to fill these places, subject to election, determines the strength or weakness of the party in all the various localities that go to make up our country. One link In. this great chain is the Sixth District, normally republican by a safe majority. But with the lesson of the last election in mind, the election in which Congressman Watson's former
majorities were cut to a mere 1,5K), it i
behooves the republicans through their delegates to select for their nominee for congress the man who can lend the
greatest strength to the party. And ' in this connection we doubt if Judge Barnard, fresh from the defeat admin-; istered him in chosing the Wayne ! county delegation, and now with the ' leak from Henry county disclosing the fact that he cannot rely upon having a I
solid delegation from his own county, can fill the bill sufficiently to justify Sixth District republicans in placing him at the head of their ticket.
People everywhere are familiar with th- fact that -Mr. Rorkeffller suffered greatly with dyspepsia nnl eonm-quent stomach ills for years, which no amount of doftorlnj? or money could relieve or cure. About three years nj?o. an old physician in northern tjhlo offered a presriiit ion which q'licklv brought about a vast change for the better and a final cure. Mr. Jtoek'-ft'ller thinks lie i.-: pood for ninny year yet ami f h his friend.s. ANOTHER CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR
Another Democrat, Wm. 0?Keefe, Announces Himself.
Plymouth. Ind.. March i:. William O'Kcefe, ex-treasurer of Marshall county today announced that he was a candidate for the democratic nomination for governor. It was while Mr. O'Keefe was county treasurer that he came into prominence by his contention that the interest collected on pubHe funds belongs to the people. He carried the matter to the last legislature and worked for the depository measure which is now on the statute books, Mr. O'Keefe's entry into the governorship race makes the Thirteenth district two candidates; the other being C. G. Conn, of Elkhart.
HOWEVER IT IS VERY PROBABLE IT WILL NOT GET THROUGH AND CAUCUS MAY PASS ON ALDRICH MEASURE.
Washington, March l'J. It is evident that the currency legislation situation has been greatly simplified by the elimination of the railroad bond provision from the Aldrlch bill. The prospect now is that the bill will eventually get through the house. Hven
with the railroad bond feature out, the ; measure is not satisfactory to a major-; ity of the house republicans, but they j say they realize that it must be the ! Aldrlch bill or nothing. They do not: desire to return to their constituents i
without some legislation having been enacted. While the Foraker bill, which Is now before the house, is regarded with great favor, its friends admit that it probably could not get through the senate if the house should pass it. The program now is for the bouse republicans to hold a caucus after the Aldrich bill gets through the senatw to decide what course to pursue.
