How th. lda of the Device Came te Thomas Godfrey. Concerning Thomas Godfrey, a famous American mathematician, there la an Interesting account In the ''Literary History of Philadelphia." Thomas Godfrey was a glazier. He seemed to be one of the roost singular phenomena that ever appeared In the learned world. One day while at work at his trade a young girl came to a pump and filled t pail with water, which was left upon the sidewalk. The sun's rays were rejected from Godfrey's glass to the pall f water and then to his eye, thus completing a triangle. This is said to have suggested to the glazier's mind the idea which in 1730 became the basis for tho looble reflecting sea quadrant. Prior to this time English mariners bad been using Davis bow to ascertain their latitude at sea, but it could not be adjusted in a storm. Godfrey gave the aabject careful study, taught himself Latin in order to read Newton's "Prlncipla" and endeavored to have the value of his invention recognized in England. While thus engaged he determined to have the device tested on a ship bound for the West Indies. In Jamaica the qnadrant was exhibited, or presented, to an English sea captain. Thus the Important discovery came into the possession of Iladley, a mathematical instrument maker in London, whose name It usually bears In spite of the long exertions of influential Americans of the eighteenth century to have Godfrey's claims stsMtohed and honored. TESTING DRUGS. rgetine la Tried on Chickens, Digitalie en Frog. A lot of eorry looking chickens, dogs and cats loafed In the black, ill smelling yard of the great chemical plant. "W nse these animals to test our drugs on," aaJd the chemist. "They com in rery handy. They more than earn their board. "Ergotine la a drug we test on chickens. It is a simple test. If a dose or ergotine f&Ua to turn a chicken's comb black, we know that the drug Is for some reason or other worthless. "Hasheesh we test on dogs. Hasheesh is made of female heu buds. Male hemp buds have no medicinal value, yet some dishonest dealers put male buds on the market, and since they resemble the female buds precisely it is impossible to detect them save by an actual test Dogs given hasheesh get drunk and happy if the stuff is good. "Digitalis, the heart stimulant, la tested on frogs. We Inject a drop of It Into a frog's stomach, and in the kymograph, or heart recording machine, we study the changes that take place In the frog's heart action. Thus wo get a rery accurate knowledge of what our digitalis can do. "Do wo ever test drugs on ourselves? Oh, yes, indeed, often. Chemists have lost their lives, chemists have gone incurably insane, through too rash a bravery In testing drugs on their own Persons." Los Angeles Times. PREMIER BANNERMAN'S Physicians Guarding Over English Statesman. Umdon. .March IS. The condition of Premier Bannerman Is unchanged, but on account of disquieting symptoms, the physicians have decided to remain in attendance. Theree was much speculation in the lobbies of Parliament in regard to the coming cabinet changes. It is understood with the accession of Herbert Asquith to the premiership there will be a reconstruction, the marquis of Itipon and Sir Henry Fowler both retiring on account of advanced age, and Winston Spencer Churchill, under secretary for the colonies, and Sir Walter Kuncinian. financial secretary to the treasury, being promoted to cabinet rank. THE DUCK SHOVER. A Man Who Gets Things on the Bounce and the Nod. An amusing dialogue occurred between Judge Willis, K. C, and a plaintiff who sued a man for the value of a quantity of grain supplied. His honor said he had received a letter from the defendant, who said he could offer only half a crown a month. "That." continued his honor, "will take six years to get rid of the debt." Plaintiff (emphatically) I would willingly forgive a poor man. but when you find he is a "swanker" and doing every one in the neighborhood it puts your back up. Laughter. We have to cut things very fine in order to get a shilling or two, and then these gentry come "swanking" about the country as if they were toffs. I am told by others that he is nothing more than a "duck shover." Laughter. 1 His Honor A what shover? Loud laughter. Plaintiff Duck shover, your honor, a man who gets things on the bounce and the nod.- r Renewed laughter. tils Honor You mean a man who gets people to let him have things on credit by representations that are not correct? Is that what you mean to convey by your big phrases duck shover and so forth? Laughter. Plaintiff That's it duck shover and swanker. Renewed laughter. An order to pay 5 shillings monthly was made. London News. For Husbands. A clergyman took down a small volume. "This is called." he said, "the 'Instructions of Ptah-ho-Tep." It is one of the very oldest papyrus writings known. It gives among other things i advice to husbands, and that advice is as good today is it ever was. Listen." And he read: " 'If thou be wise, furnish thy house well. " 'Woo thy wife ever, and never Quarrel with her. " 'Nourish her daintily. " 'Deck her out, for fine dress is her greatest delight. " 'Feed her upon sweets. " 'Perfume her. " 'Make her glad with praise. " 'Adorn her with jewels, feathers and the skins of beasts as sumptuously as thy purse will suffer.'" How Much He Thought About Her. They were on their way to the theater, and she was tremulously happy. She felt that the words she longed t hear would be spoken that night, and the idea made her almost dizzy with delight. "Mr. Sampson." she said softly, ' why do you wear that bit of string upon your ringer'.-'' "Oh." replied Mr. Sampson, taking it i off. "'that was to remind me of my eni gageruent with you tonight.' It wasn't much, but it was enough to take away the delightful dizziness. London Chronicle. D Ter feetly harmless and pleasurable BLACK BURNr D If not, your money back 10c and 2Zc. D

CLERK NOT PLEASED Decatur Officials Does Relish Idea of Taking Deposed Mayor's Seat. COFFEE'S MANY TROUBLES. Decatur, Ind., March IS. C. O. France, city clerk of Decatur does not relish very favorably the prospect of having to assume the office of mayor, since the office has been declared vacant by a jury in the Jay circuit court finding the mayor, David D. Cotfee guilty of improper conduct and declaring the office vacant. To accept the position means a reduction iu France's salary of $50. The law provides the city clerk shall serve as mayor, when such a contingency arises, however. It is not known if Coffee will ask for an appeal from the court decision. His troubles arose over his attempt, to depose the town marshal as the result of a political controversy. FAVOR MM WITH HOE Residents of West Richmond Say Road Scraper Injures Streets. GRADES ARE DESTROYED. Scrapiug the city's streets with the j large scraper .such as is being done I this week under the supervision of the ! street commissioner, does not meet ! with universal approval. The scraper j is at work in West Richmond at presI ent. There is no doubt of the fact it ;does the work practically the same as ' if it were done by "the man with the hoe" as in former years, but it is be lieved the surface of the street is damaged. The scraper removes a greater part of the surface than is aone by the hoe gang and this results in a constant cutting down of the grade. All the streets of the West Side are comparatively new and the largest number are made of gravel only. The machine scraper cuts through the toft surface, and after it has completed its work. it. is but a short time until ruts are worn. Oenius Defined.
