m Tell No One of His Attitude Toward Eighth's Congressional Situation.
ARE THREE CANDIDATES.
CLAIMED THAT FORMER CONGRESSMAN WILL HOLD DELEGATIONS IN DEADLOCK AND AT LATE HOUR WILL TURN TO HIM
Muncie, Ind., March 17. With the Eighth district republican congres
sional convention only a week off, George W. Cromer of Muncie, ex-representative of this district in congress maintains his original silence upon the question of being a candidate for auother nomination. For several months Mr. Cromer has been looked upon by politicians generally throughout the district, regardless of political faith, as being engaged in a deep plot to take the nomination away from the others after the convention is in progress. His plan, it is said, is to have the delegates to the convention so absolutely under his control that they can ballot several times upon the other candidates without nominating, and then, seemingly from necessity, turn to Cromer and hand the nomination. The convention is to be held at Anderson, March 2. Repeated efforts on the part of Mr. Cromer's intimate political friends to draw him out along this line have availed nothing. The announced candidates for the nomination for congress are Albert H.
Vestal of Anderson, Senator Nathan B. Hawkins of Portland and Theodore Shockney of Randolph county. Ves
tal is considered a Cromer man; Haw
kins never has been particularly act
ive on either side of the Cromer war.
while Shockney several times has openly opposed the Muncie man in his
political ambitions.
Within the last two or three weeks two elements have entered into the race that may have an important bearing upon the action of the conven
tion delegates. One was the half-
entry of G. B. Slaymaker of Anderson
Into the contest for the nomination and
the other was the report that Mr. Cromer would give his support to "the candidacy" of Senator Hawkins. Slaymaker Is Receptive. Mr. Slaymaker is not to be considered a candidate for the nomination in the strict sense of the word. Rather be is in the attitude of the man who is willing to accept if the honor is thrust upon him. Mr. Slaymaker has done practically no work toward furthering his Interests outside of Anderson, and his friends have been no more active. The report that Mr. Cromer will back Senator Hawkins in the race is not new. Several weeks ago it was announced here that the Portland candidate had solicited Mr. Cromer's aid and that he would be almost unwilling to enter the race if Mr. Cromer intended to start. At that time, however, Mr. Cromer would say nothing definite about his own candidacy and Senator Hawkins was left in the dark. Friends of Mr. Slaymaker made much capital" out of the fact that the resolutions committee of the Madison county republican convention failed to
make any mention of Mr. Vestal's candidacy In Its convention report.
