He bases his judgment on the way artificial digestion proceeds in the presence of marine salt.

500,000 employes of the roads of the ' country have been laid off since No-! vember 1. The forces of the mecban- i ical .accounting, engineering and cler-' ical departments, have been reduced an average of one-third. In normal : times the railroads of the United j States employ about l.OOO.HiO men. Policy of Retrenchment. Retrenchments are still being made : by most of the railroads. Depart-! ment heads have orders to continue a i gradual weeding-out process wherever i practicable. j While there has been a slight in-! crease in traffic of late, railroad men ; say that the improvement has not been : sufficient to warrant the assumption ; that the end of the reduction of forces
has been reached. Rumors of a general advance of freight rates have been current, but as Jet the matter has not advanced beyond a discussion of possibilities.

After an unsuccessful search for his brother Jacob, in this city. Luther Butts has returned to his home at Rustiville in despair. .;ob Bulls disappeared mysteriously about ihree weeks :vo, and h;is no! been heard from since. The family has advanced the plausible theory of suicide. The man had been suffering from a severe attach of grip and had Been delirious at times. He was last seen by any one. who knew him personally, standing on the Main street bridge, looking into the water. A conductor on an interurban car between this city and Indianapolis, has advanced a new theory, which has revived hope among the relatives of Butts. The . conductor says lie has eaten meals at the restaurant in this city where Butts was employed, a number of times and knew the man so there can be no doubt of his identity. He asserts Butts went as far as Indianapolis on his car. Butts seemed well supplied with money. It was on the same day that Butts disappeared from Richmond, and according to the conductor, the man said he intended to leave this part of the country. Butts had withdrawn his money from a local savings institution. Since hearing the story of the conductor, Luther Butts has some hope his brother intended to go to Missouri, where he has relatives. Letters have been written to the members of the family in Missouri.

Candidates for these offices have become so plentiful that the local leaders of the party are considering very seriously of selecting their candidates by direct primary. All seem to think this would be more sat-
