TERRIBLE MONSTERS
They Fought for the Body of a
Girl Who Came to Life Again.
Chicago, March 14. A new source of evenue to Uncle Sam that may event
ually run into millions of dollars an
nually, is part of the iatest plans of the International Waterways commis
sion. This is the utilization of tat-
mmense water power that will be de
veloped by the construction of dams
n the Mississippi and other rivers in onnection with the proposed govern
ment waterway projects. The animal
value of the unused water power of
he United States at present is placed
by experts at the enormous figure of nearly ?', mm or more than the annual value of all the mines in
he country, including coal and iron as
well as the precious metals. It al
ready ha-s dams at the headwaters of he Mississippi and elsewhere, but few
of them are now utilized. The development of the great internal river projects, which President Roosevelt urged in his last message, w ill call for the
construction of dams which will produce hundreds of thousands of horse power as an incident to making the rivers greater highways of commerce.
A way Is thus opened for Uncle Sam to take a hand in the exploitation of na
tional resources. Whether this water
power will be leased or used direct has not yet been determined, but in either case it will provide revenue which
should go far to take care of the tipkeep of the canals and river chaunels, when once these are completed.

WIFE SPANKED HUBBY
WITH HER SLIPPER
She Also Pinched Aged Man
And He Is Now Suing For Divorce.
Detroit, Mich., March 14 That his wife, Minnie, 66 years old, spanked him with a slipper and pinched his arm are charges made by Christian Csoble, 70 years old, in his bill asking for a divorce. They were married September 29, 1906. Each had been married before. Czoble declares that only a few
weeks after the wedding his aged
bride turned him over her knee and
used her slipper,- because he did not
give her $5 for a new dress. He ulti mately gave up the five, he said. Mrs
Czoble denies the allegations and says her husband told her lie was wealthy when he courted her, but that
she was deceived.

IT IS AN UNUSUAL STORY
raris, .March 14 Cotnte de Larmandie, a well known scientist, is responsible for the remarkable story told of the apparent revival of a girl three hours dead. He said: "A young
girl apparently died from
causes, and the physicians with the consent of the family secured the body a few hours after the death. After
three hours' treatment the girl opened her eyes. Further stimulated, she was able to speak. 'When I fell asleep at the hospital,' said she, 'there was an indefinite period of complete prostration, and then I became conscious of a growing sensation of cold. Suddenly there was a delicate shock. The last tie uniting me and my body was brok-

Chicago, 111., March 14. A close investigation of the Chicago schools will be made by a committee which has been appointed to examine the fire escapes, stairways and exits, test the efficiency of the fire drills and to in-; vestigate violations of the city fire j ordinances that may be found. The j school house horror at Collinwood, Ohio, had a peculiarly vivid interest for Chicago people because of the Iro-1 ouois theater disaster which in this
natural : generation will never be forgotten by ;
! Chicago people. The investigations , I are in accordance with recommenda-1 I tions of the secretary of the Illinois
state board of health, who, in all the country was one of the first to advise all local authorities to visit and inspect school houses and to see that provisions were made for the safety of the children. Similar investigations are being made all over the country, and in most cases are necessary. Even under the rules of the various city bureaus, it has been discovered that
many of the Chicago school buildings j are not at present duly protected, and ;
in smaller cities and in rural districts the danger, it is believed, is correspondingly greater as the ordinary inspection is less.
