Washington, March 14 Submitting the extraordinary plea that eightypound Joseph Polucci, condemned to die March 2:1 for the murder of his sweetheart, is too light, to break his neck when the trap falls, the attorneys for the condemned Italian will appeal to President Roosevelt fo commute the sentence to life imprisonment. Physicians declare that, the man will surely bo strangled to death. Tho attorneys say Paolucci is going to die soou, anyhow, and that his emaciated condition, due to the ravages of consumption, forbids the inhumanity of hanging him. Paolucci doesn't care whether he, is hanged or not. bis attorneys say. He knows that death is inevitable, aud spends bis days in the District of Columbia jail, morbid and morose, awaiting the end. Paolucci shot and killed Miss Elizabeth Dodge, a Washington girl, more than a year ago. He has been convicted In the lower courts twice, Ihe conviction was affirmed by the District Supreme court, and finally passed upon by the United States Supremo court, which refused to order a third trial. OTHER WOMEN INTERESTED Detroit, Mich.. March 14 A little over a year ago five Detroit women met and organized a stork club. Since then the stork has visited every member. The idea originated with Mrs. Emily Boldrick and it was not long before she had gained four neighbors as converts to her way of thinking. The members and mothers of the children are Mrs. Emily Boldriek, Mrs. Ella Schmitt, Mrs. Anna Shantz. Mrs. Ruby Rudd and Mrs. Clare Carey. This club was organized in January, 100", and long before the little innocents were ushered into a workaday world the mothers met weekly. They discussed things for the welfare of children, but substantially and equally important, too. they prepared clothing for the little ones. Other women iu the neighborhood are taking a lively interest in the proceedings aud it is predicted that the mebcrship soon will be doubled. OLEO CAUSE TROUBLE Revenue Officers Are Kept Busy Owing to Butter Shortage. LARGE CITIES AFFECTED. Chicago. III., March 14 Butter has been so high of late, and the substitution of "oleo" for it has been so highly profitable, that internal revenue officers at Chicago have started a campaign through Northern Illinois against dishonest dealers. It is believed that the sale of oleomargarine, colored to resemble butter, ia being carried out ou a much wider scale than had been suspected. Extra deputies from the revenue office have been sent out to punish all who are vio-1 lating the law. Uncle Sam ia much j interested, for there is a stamp tax ! of a quarter of a cent a pound on all ; oleomargarine sold uncolored. and ten cents a pound on that which has been colored. Wherever the "oleo" Is sold as creamery butter, the evasion of taxes means a very handsome profit. I The fraud Is being carried on prixiel-! pally In the larger cities, where the j butter buyers are not so familiar with ; the real thing, fresh frtm farm, or ' datrv. Beaver Falls. Pa.. March 14.- Eight ' boy pupils of the high school were re-! cently reported to the school board for allowing the hot water to drain out of the heating apparatus of the high school building, also for placing limburger cheese in the heating register so that between the absence of the heat and the odor of the cheese school had to be dismissed. The boys have been suspended pending further action of the board. Meantime a petition is being prepared by the citizens and parents to the board praying that each boy concerned in the prank, be given a thrashing and allowed to return to his studies. L is believed a good, old-fashioned "lambasting" will do more good than suspension and demerit marks, j WOMAN POURED OIL ON SELF AND FIRED IT Visited Grave of Mother Where She Committed Deed. Mo., March 14. A woman highway robber, who wears man's attire and a mask, is operating in St. Louis. Her hands are small and white and they glitter with diamond rings. Her feet are dainty and shapely, and h'-r fashionable boots have high French heels. Her voice is musical and feminine, but her mariner that of the professional "strong-arm man." Iter victims are young girls who go out in the evening, purse in hand, to make purchases. The police are puzzled, and they arc asking: Is this some opera bouffe prank of a society girl, grown too blase for the dance and the reception? Is the robber some desperate woman of the .shadows, some beautiful nymph of crime, who may. before she is appre-1 bended, perpetrate more and more bold i nd heinous villainies? Fourteen-year-old Nellie Watson, who lives with her parents at ''o2J Warren street, was twice held up. The last time Nellie, without any thought of danger, was tripping along when suddenly, out of an alley, there came with a mincing step, a slender figure, dressed like a man. but palbahly a woman. No man ever walked like that. No man ever had a figure like that No man ever had such tiny, dazzling white bands as that. And over the pretty face was a silken mask, such as "Pink Domino'' wears at the costume ball. The robber's little hand grabbed the purse Nellie carried and disappeared.
