sa JAPAN PREPARES FOR BLOODY WAR Resident of Pekin for Many Years Anticipates Trouble With China. AWAITING AN OPPORTUNITY WHEN THE TIME COMES TO STRIKE, THE BROWN MEN WILL STRIKE HARD RUSSIAN ALLIANCE IS NOW SCENTED. Washington, March 7. That Japan is preparing for war with China is the firm belief of Horace E. Edwards, who has been a resident of Pekin for the past twenty years and who is now in Washington on business. "I wouldn't be surprised at any time now to learn that the Japanese fleet had appeared in some Chinese port, bombarded the town and sunk the Chinese war vessels," said he today. "Japan is merely awaiting a favorable opportunity to strike. She h?.s to have an outlet for her surplus population and China offers the best field for colonization. "In her weakened state China could offer feeble resistance, for she has no navy, and while her army is being strengthened, it is insignificant compared to that of the Japanese. The latter country has with much prescience negotiated treaties with every foreign power except the United States and Germany, and, under these circumstances the last-named countries would perhaps have to remain neutral in the event of war between the two great countries of the orient. That Japan will ever evacuate Manchuria is not for a moment believed by any persons familiar with the attitude and temperament of the Japanese people and government. "Many persons in China and Japan believe the Japanese and Russians have a plan whereby Japan will precipitate war with China and that then Russia and Japan will divide up Manchuria between them." 9M TRYING TO OVERTHROW A LOVED TRADITION Ground Hog, It Is Said, Is No Weather Prophet. Elwood, Ind., March 7. Jacob Wise, near this city, has protected a family of ground hogs on his farm lor six years. He took special note of tho animals on Ash Wednesday, and he says that so far as wea.Iier prognostications are concerned, there is nothing to indicate that these rodents have anything; to do with the weather. Three of the little animals emerged from their holes about 6 o'clock on Ash Wednesday and partook of a celery and carrot breakfast, one of them apparently returning to t.ie den to toil the rest of the family what was going on. The remaining two came out. and none of the groundhogs returned to the den until after 0 o'clock, and would not likely have done so then, but a dog approached and they scampered at the first scent of danger. Mr. Wise says that the groundhogs have been out at least twenty times this winter, and they stay out on sun-shiny clays three or four hours Tefore returning.
