This morning the hoard of public works adopted resolutions for two im

portant and necessary public improvements. The improvements in question are cement curbs, gutters and sidewalks on South A street from Second to Eighteenth streets, and the paving of North E street from Tenth street to Sixteenth street, together with cement curbs, gutters and sidewalks. There is a petition in for the improvements on South A street and it is thought there will be no remonstrance against them when the day of hearing on this resolution comes. Property owners on North E street will probably enter a remonstrance with the board because the resolution calls for cement sidewalks. Property owners on this street are now reconciled to the fact that it is necessary for It to be paved, and they do not object to the placing of cement

curbs and gutters. When they do object to, however, is cement walks. They insist that at the present time it is not necessary to build cement walks, arguing that they will be put to enough expenses by the other contemplated improvements. If the property owners do remonstrate against building the walks it is probable that on the day of the hearing the board will strike out this proposed improvement. The board will feel satisfied if these property owners offer no opposition to the plan of paving the street, which is now in a terrible condition. As soon as the proposed improvements on So .th A street are completed the board will adopt a resolution to have the street macadamized as it is now in bad condition.

Wm. H. Bartel Thinks Richmond Should Send Men , To Indianapolis.

William H. Bartel thinks the city of Richmond would do a wise thins in following the example of Eaton, O., in

sending prisoners to a workhouse, lie states that at Eaton when a man is arrested he is sent to the Dayton workhouse. The town of Eaton has a contract with the city of Dayton which permits this arrangement. Mr. Bartel thinks that Richmond should contract with Indianapolis to have local prisoners confined and employed at the workhouse in that city.

AN INVESTIGATION ECHO.

Washington. March 4. The president has decided to appoint W. S. Rossiter, of New York, to be public printer to succeed Charles S. Stillings, of Massachusetts. Mr. Rossiter has been for several yeas chief clerk of the census office and recently was detailed by the president to make an examination into the conduct of business at the government printing office. When Stillings was recently suspended as the result of discoveries made by the house investigating committee, of which Congressman Landis of Indiana, is chairman, the president appointed Mr. Rossiter as Stillings' temporary successor. The treasury department refused to approve Rossiter's bond, on the ground

that the law provided that an employe ' of the government printing office 1 should be placed in temporary charge i in the event of a change in the head of the office. It was then that the president selected Mr. Rossiter as his per- j sonal representative in the investiga- j tion. Thomas A. Carter has been a j candidate for the place. j
