MEN

Portland, Ind., Feb. 2i. The young men of Portland, of marriageable age, are forewarned. On Wednesday evening a conspiracy was entered into by a number of the young women of the city, who have grown tired of waiting for the exercise of that prerogative that is usually recognized m the eole right of man. Taking advantage of leap year, at a meeting at the home of one of their number, they organized a club to be known as "The Portland Leap Year association."' Each of the members as one of the conditions to the consideration of her application, was required to pledge that she would devote herself strenuously, to winning from his beloved bacheloi hood one of the backward, dilly-dallying or obstinate members of the opposite sex. During the remaining ten months of the year, it is expected that Daniel jupid will be busy in Portland. The girls have secured the name of several young men of marriageable age in the city. He is to be attacked by the use of all the ways and wiles Ivnown alone to the feminine heart, to draw him from his exclusiveness, and to convince him that it is better to snare his society, and incidentally the income of his daily work, with a winsome and altogether willing member of the fairer sex. Together with the names, the girls have in some instances secured photographs of their prospective victims. Opposite the names in the list is recorded the information concerning rach prospective victim. So far twen-

ty-two names adorn the register, followed by the following descriptions: That Awful List, 1. Attorney; got the ring and !s anxious to use it. 2. Driller: too gay. 3. Stock buyer; is easy

The Afew Spring Quarterly Style Book and How Richmond Women Regard It.

To hear the continual call for the Spring Quarterly stylo book, one wtKild almost conic to the conclusion that it was the only book printed that pertained to style and fashion. When the first lot of Spring Quarterly stylt books put in their appearance and were displayed in our windows, we noticed a broad smile on most every customer that isited our pattern counter. They had been waiting for this bright and snappy book of fashions, full of correct information concerning the advance t-ivle of dress. It's not the lteautiful cover on this book that created this enormous demand, but its one hundred pages of Spring stylo creations, beautiful f.ihion drawings, and its unlimited help to the home dressmaker and those learning to sew that made this a much sought for Intok of stylo know ledge. To successfully promote a cause, the cause must be right. This beautiful Spring quarterly is brought out to promote the sale of our LADIES' HOME JOURNAL. PATTERNS which have from 4 standpoint of merit, won their way into most every home in Richmond. The Spring Quarterly Style Book, worth at least 35c, including a Ladies' Home Journal pattern, worth 15c, all for 20c, at the pattern counter.

ACCIDENT PREVENTED PLANS OF TERRORIST

St. Petersburg, Feb. 2!). The police tell of a recent effort of the terrorists to get at intended victims. Two handsome young men, they say, took lodgings in fashionable quarters and assumed passports of a Baltic baron and a Southern landowner. They played the roles of spendthrifts and participated in the debaucheries customary in the high life of the capital and succeeded, through their close acquaintance with officers of the guard, in gaining entree to the social events of a certain aristocratic house. On one occasion, the police say, the "Baltic baron" inadvertently dropped a revolver at a reception at which Premier Stolypin was due to appear. The premier, however, was then warn

ed by detectives and remained at home. The police made a search of the lodgings of the two men, but they had cleverly made their escape. That

the sentence of death imposed yester

day against Calvino, the Italian newspaper correspondent, and six other

terrorists, who were convicted of complicity in the recent plot upon the lives of Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholaievitch and M. Chtchegiovitoff, the minister of justice, will not be carried into effect without an effort being made to save them, was made manifest today when an appeal based on constitutional grounds and involving the competency of the Douma was lodged with Gen. Ilazenkempf, chief of the general staff.
