TAGGARTON HOT FOOT National Chairman Will Be Opposed by the Indiana Democracy. ORGANIZATION PROGRESSES Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. ITS. It is ruriored here that the anti-Taggart forces are preparing to bring out candidates for delegate to the National Contention, from this district and one candidate for delegate at. large from Indiana. If their followers are able to control the primaries and the slate convention, they will elect three delegates from here to oppose the re-election of Thomas Taggart as democratic National committeeman. The anti-Taggart element now has control of the county organization, and Chairman Fogarty will be able to appoint all of the election officers. He has promised to be chairman of the entire party but ex-Mayor John W. Iloltzman. James L. Keach and other antiTaggart leaders managed his camXaign, and it Is said that they will demand his assistance in defeating any t?ne for delegate from here who may be favorable to Taggart. An organization Is being made in every district to defeat Taggart if his name is presented for committeeman. The cntl-Taggart leaders believe they have him on the run. because of the result of the contest over the county organization, and they are losing no time or opportunity of going after him in every locality where they can find eny one to take up their cause. BARRED BY FACULTY Ancient Purdue Custom Now Dead. Is Lafayette, Ind., Feb. 2S. The Purdue senior class has been informed by the faculty that the custom of burning mechanics will not be permitted this year, and there is considerable feeling in the class as a result of the faculty's edict. The mechanics burning has heen a tradition at Purdue for many years, being held soon after the beginning of the second semester, and the seniors of the various classes of engineering participate. The idea is to celebrate the completion of the study of mechanics, the most difficult in the engineering curriculum. The celebration is carried out by miming a representation or the text-1 hook. In connection there are a mim-1 der of interesting exercises; and some j of them are not as dignified as the fac-! ulty desires. It was on this account ! that action was talen by the faculty. The senior class, h'owever. is planning to hold the celebration behind closed doors. CONSPIRACY 10 SLAY CHICAGO PRIEST! Has Been Discovered, Frustrated. But Chicago. Feb. EACH TELEPHONE AN ALARM BO!
Chief Miller and Wm. M. Bail ey of the Home Company Devise a Scheme. MEANS GOOD PROTECTION. ALARMS CAN BE TURNEt IN THL IS MOS"i IN FROM ANY POINT CITY THE SCHEME UNIQUE. Wm. M. Bailey, manager of the Rich mond Home Telephone company, ami Kd Miller, chief of the fire department, have been working on a plan by which each automatic telephone could b made a fire alarm box and after goin:: into the matter very thoroughly, they have happily struck a most uniqtuscheme, which is now Installed and working very satisfactorily. The plan is that number 12151. which is printed on each telephone dial, is to be used for no other purpose except to report fire. Whenever a subscriber pulls this numbers it rings the telephone and gives an alarm at No. '2 engine house, which is located in the city building. This phone is not to be used for any other purpose than to receive an alarm of fire. Therefore, whenever it rings, the chief or assistant immediately answers same, taking the exact location of the fire as reported. This phone is so arranged that immediately on receiving this call by throwing a switch he can ring all of the other engine houses simultaneously and communicate with all at the same time. All of the other engine houses at the same time receive this order and are posted as to where the fire is and which has been sent out. All of the engines remaining in, know who will next be called. The chief can also use this device at any time for giving general orders or for any other purpose that he sees fit. Number 2 engine house is also supplied with another phone, 210S, that will be used for general purposes and the public is hereby notified that none of the members of the fire department wiil receive any calls except lor fire over telephone l-IH. Alarmers in Danger. The system is also so arranged that as soon as a fire call is turned In it gives an alarm in the automatic room of the Home Telephone company and the switchman on duty immediately plugs up the two phones, that is the phone calling and the fire department, so they cannot release. He then traces the connection and makes a record of j the phone calling and the time that I the call was made. This is to detect anyone giving a false alarm. In case a falsa alarm is given, all that Is necessary is for the chief of the department to Inquire of the telephone company from what phone this alarm came, and he immediately receives the information and then can locate the offending party. The alarm Is also registered at the information desk, who receives all Information that has been given to the fire department and is immediately in position to answer all inquiries as to location of fire, etc. Doth the city and Homo Telephone company are very much pleased at this arrangement and fell that they have accomplished a tremendous protection to property, as with the use of this system every telephone Is an actual fire alarm box and an alarm can be turned in to headquarters even with more dispatch than is required to reach a fire alarm box and make the report by operating same. The telephone fire alarm system adopted in Kichmond has been discussed by the automatic electric company and many other automatic companies and is considered the very best that has yet been installed. It really gives the ci'.y, in addition to the number of boxes it now has. about I'mii) additional lire alarm boxes. It also enables the watchmen at. factories and stores to Ket immediate and prompt response to calls turned in from these places and also gives each resident who uses an automatic telephone, direct communication to the fire department. The reason that both the city and the telephone company object to this phone being used for any other purpose is, that if the phone is in use for some private conversation and some one desired to report a fire, it would be impossible for them to reach the fire department as they would receive the "bu.sy test" every time they called this number, but if the phone is not allowed to be used for any other purpose then it is always open for in-coni-insr calls. The city and the ITomo Telephone ictc. This valuable remedy is really a doctor's prescription and cures these affections easily, promptly and thoroughly. Rev. Hobson Says That There Are Many Sinners in the Churches Today. ASHAMED OF THE EAGLE. HE CLAIMS THAT AMERICANS IN HEAVEN WILL FEEL THAT WAY TOWARD AMERICAN COIN RE VIVALS CONTINUE. The interest in the union t' viva. meeting at the First M. K. t-hun-h wj intense last night, and continued miti. after eleven o'clock. Dr. Hobson ballot preached with greater liberty an i power in any of the other services or the series. His theme was 'Disappointments." Dr. Hobson said in pail. When one's heart is fully and completely set on something and that vanishes away, how great is the disappointment: The sneerer, the scoffer, the rejecto.of God has no advantage over thi Christian, death and the judgmeu. comes to him just the same. You can't buy your soul's welfare with jeer?, snickerings. cursings or scoffing. It is not necessarily the gambler, the drunkard, the harlot who have lost Christ, but some who sit on the front seats or sing in the choirs may have lost him. Christ is not contagion.-, like mumps or smallpox. You may sit by a christian, live with one. have one for your husband or wife, and ytt die a miserable sinner. You may sit by a rich man and die a pauper. You may own a prayer-book, have your name on the church record, attend the services of God's house and die a miserable, wretched sinner. Sin will rob you of your priceless heritage and mock you on your deathbed. I won der if some of us have not lost the keen edge of our christian experience ' We have listened to the scoffings ot others, heard their jeers and gibes at Christ and His servants and have not dared to. defend Him, but have trembled under their devilish vituperations. It does not take a thunderstorm for one to lose Christ. One may lose Him in a moment as he may lose his sight. I wish we would not hold Jesus at arms length. One may suppose he has Christ. His parents supposed he was in the company. Supposition will never give you credit in the commercial world. You must have the cash or its equivalent. How often we are disappointed when we seek him among our friends or relatives and find him not: You can know whether you are paralyzed or not, whether you are dead or alive. We can know whether we have Christ or not. You never can make the almighty dollar take the place of Jesus in your heart. Fine clothes, splendid jewels, elegant homes! how can we take our riches to heaven with us? We would be ashamed of them in heaven. We would be ashamed of the American eagle in heaven midst all the glory and riches and the beauty of the birds of paradise there. Mary would not be comforted when she discovered that she had lost Jesus. When the first sorrow came into your home, whom did you want? That old saint of God whose face, though wrinkled, yet out of it shown the light of heaven, you wanted her to come and pray for you and give you comfort. You wanted Jesus. If we have a high regard for good people and for Jesus Christ in sorrow, let us have a high regard for theni in our joys. One may lose Christ by refusing to pray or testify for him. We may lose him at the communion table. Judas did. One may lose Him. at Calvary, -he disciples did. It takes bravery to stand when Jesus has been insulted. You can lose Christ by association with sinners, the Apostle Peter did. Yon can love Christ, in business transactions, Ananias and Saphira did. Time and eternity are partners; as
