SEVERAL PEOPLE INJURED.
Philadelphia, Feb. 'Jl. Headed for City Hall with a huge red, black, bordered and crepe festooned banner waving over the head of their leader, 2,)0 Italians fought for half an hour on Broad street, from Walnut, in' the fashionable club and hotel district, down to Washington evenue, eight block down town. The affair was practically a bread riot, caused by conditions of labor in Philadelphia, where hundreds are out of work. The method of protest, however, was distinctly anarchistic. Not until the head of the column, which stretched over four solid squares from side to side had reached Walnut street were the police able to halt first the desperate mob and then disperse them after the fiercest battle in the history of the police department. Men and women of fashion watched the progress of the fight from the windows of the fashionable Bellevue-Strat-ford hotel, many of the windows of which where shattered by bullets. As the fight increased in fury, more policemen arrived from a half dozen stations and from the city nail. The riot had begun with not more than six policemen diving into the head of the column and grappling with the paraders. Before it was over more than rxt mounted policemen, motor policemen, reserves and bluecoats from surrounding districts were scattered along Broad street, fightiug the mob from every side. The interference of the police was timely. Had they been a few minutes later in reenforcing the little squad, the mob would have overpowered them and continued on its wild rush. Twelve of the leaders of the mob were arrested. The prisoners were taken froni the throng of rioters after fierce struggles with fc.e Italians, who fought desperately to free their leaders. In the melee three policemen were shot and slightly wounded, and Charles
Monn, who was watching the fight. I
was struck in the leg by a stray bullet. Reserve Officer Fyott was beaten, and Policeman Smith, who went to the rescue of the drivers, was badly hurt. Harry Drumding, one of these, was beaten and nearly stripped of his ciothing. A number of participants in the demonstration, were severely cubbed and had to bo sent to a hospital.

Shafer Bros. Received Worthless Checks.
The Shafer Brothers, a local concern, has filed a demand in the circuit, court, against the Marshall, Rost, Bartel company. The amount demanded is $375. The plaintiff in the complaint avers that they received checks from the defendant for this amount but that the Second National bank refused to cash them on demand.
Chicago, Feb. 21 Crime will be decreased considerably in Chicago, it is believed, by the action taken of tho Council Committee on Judiciary. The
aldermen voted favorably on three ordinances designed to put an end to the carrying of deadly weapons. One of the ordinances obligates the city custodian overy six months to take all weapons that come into his possession and dump them into the lake at least five miles from shore. Another ordinance requires dealers in weapons to pay a license fee of $50 a year and the third forbids anybody to carry a weapon unless he is a sheriff, constable, policeman or coroner. Even persons with collections of weapons, firearms, swords or daggers, antique or modern, must take out a license under the now ordinances.
