HUGHES ACTIVE NOW
Evidently He Is Willing to Do a Little Skirmishing for Nomination. NO LONGER- RECEPTIVE. Washington, Feb. 18 Governor, Hughes of New York is not only a receptive candidate for the presidency but he also is an active candidate. Lately he has been making some interesting moves in tho presidential rame. Frederick C. Stevens, the chairman of his Board of Public Works, a state official who owes his appointment to Governor Hughes, has been in Washington during the last week advancing the Hughes candidacy. He represents the New York Governor in the combination of candidates who are opiKsed to Secretary Taft. The news that Mr. Stevens has been here taking a hand in the antiTaft campaign is considered exceedingly interesting as showing that the New York executive does not occupy such a high plane of politics that he is not willing to do some skirmishing to get the nomination. Governor Hughes. It Is authoritatively stated, has the New York situation in fine shape.
