GREAT INTEREST If! REPUBLICAN NAT'L CONVENTION
Public Is Scrambling After Convention Tickets and the Supply Is Mot Half Large Enough to Meet Demand. SIX NAMES FOR NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENCY. So Far as the Vice-Presidency Is Concerned, Republicans Generally Are at Sea, But Cortelyou Is Suggested. Washington, Feb. 1C -.Four calendar months from next Sunday tho republican national convention will be called in order in the eoliseirni at Chi cago by Harry S. New, chaxrman of" the national commit iff. .Tudtrlng from nil present Indications it will be one of the most interesting political conventions in the country's history. The demand for tickets is terrific, and this is brinfcinK to the party ii:anbkpts a keen realization of the fact that the coliseum could bo twice; as large and still lack accommodations for all who wish to attend. Tnose who pleaded for a larger hall in which to hold the convention a.rc now saying. "I told you so," but the cooler Ji.ea.ds who are. looking after the management of the affairs are trying 10 make the best of the sltu.at.ioii by working every possible scheme 'to increase the available space. It. seems that at. most, the seating oap;city of the hall will be limited to alxmt .11.000 and it. will surprise 110 one if twice that many persons are on hand seeking admission. The subcommittee now ennoutr to Chicago to look over the situation will devise ways and means of still further stretching the seating capacity. Arrangements for the pn-s.3 are receiving special attention. The press facilities of 1901 were inadeua.te. F'lans already adopted provide for about 100 more seats for working correspondents than were available in 1904. Show Worth SeeJng. 'There Is a general inclination throughout the country to regard the coming convention as a show ihnt will be worth seeing. The same feeling was not manifest in 1901. Then it. was clear months in advance that Theo-j dore Roosevelt, would be nominated as 1 his own successor. There was no fight in the convention and the people did not care to pay their money for car fare and hotel bills to witness a dull and listless prnreeding. Kveryhody is of the opinion that the coming convention will be quite the opposite In character from its predecessor. That a great battle will be waged at. Chicago Is the. general forecast. Therefore despite the fact, that railroad passes are no longer to bo had. large crowds will flock to the city by the lake to witness a proceeding that promises to be full of animation and interest. In a short lime speculation will ho rife as to the men who will preside over the convention in the roles of temporary and permanent chairmen. So far thoro have been no movements, at. least above the surface, looking to 1 ho selection of the men who will wield the gave is. For the nomination for president six names, at least, will be presented to the convention. Fairbanks. Taft. Hughes. Cannon, Knox and LaFollette will be nominated by their respective, followers. To this list, may be added three more Foraker. Cununins and Cortelyou. Leslie M. Shaw, who has figured In the speculation for two or three years, will not permit his name to he used. Cummins has captured the Iowa situation and without, a delegation from his own state Mr. Shaw would present a sorry spectacle. Ho realizes this fact, and he has eliminated himself from the running. Cortelyou for Second Place. In to far as there is any discussion of the vice presidential nomination all of the prophets are at soa. There is a growing impression, however, that if the Ast. captures the presidency George P. Cortelyou may be drafted

for second place on the ticket. There Is now more talk of Cortelyou for vice president than or Cortelyou for president. The secretary of tho treasury is a poor man, and there is a popular tradition that men of means only am available for the vice presidency, but no one srems inclined to enforce the unwritten law of politics against Mr. Corteljou. Aside from Mr. Cortelyou there proljribly is more talk, of Governor Augu.'-wus E. Willson of Kentucky for the vice presidensy than of any other mail. There is a settled conviction that, if a Western man should be nominated, for president the vice presidential candidate will be chosen from the East and that if the Fast captures first, place on the ticket the West will be entitled to the vice presidential nomination. From now on the selection of delegates will proceed in a most lively fashion and the presidential political pot will boil. No record has been kept of the dates of district conventions for the choosing of delegates, but state conventions for this purpose will be held as follows: Missouri, Feb. 27: Ohio, March P.; Nebraska. .March 11; Kansas, March 1; Iowa. It w ill improve j with age, like wine, and public appreciation will grow stronger and more emphatic with longer experience. It is a play which, for many reasons, one cannot afford not to have seen. Personally, its effect is satisfying and the Ftory is absorbing. T'ne authors have gone straight to the heart of nature for their story and their characters. "The Honeymooners." When Geo. M. Cohan, the youngest and mont popular of American dramatists and composers, was informed by Klaw and Erlanger that he was to play all last summer at the New Amsterdam iheatrc in New York, he set himself to work to produce a starring vehicle, which would be the Ligsrest hit of his career. He wrote and composed "The Honeymooners" and made the greatest triumph of his crowded life playing" throughout the heated season on Broadway to capacity at Jprices. "The Honeymooners" comes to the Gennett next Saturday nizht, with the original Broadway production. It will be presented by a powerful cast of metropolitan favorites assisted by forty of the cleverest and prettiest chorus girls who ever left New- York. This latest and greatest Cohan song show is a typical Cohan piece effervescent with action and bubbling over with humor and laughter and instinct with the joy of life. It combines melodrama and music there being a strong story and no less than twenty stitting musical numbers. It is said by critics that "The Honeymooners" is the strongest musical production on the road this year arid that as a play pur- and simple it ha few rivals iu interest. Vaudeville at the Phillips.
