A FRENCH HERCULES. frlarvelous Strength of th Father of Alexandre Dumas. My father was twenty four at the time of enlisting and as handsome a young fellow as could be found anyhere. His free colonial life had developed bis strength and prowess to an extraordinary degree. He' was a veritable American horse lad. a cowboy. His skill with gun and pistol was the envy tt St Georges and Juuot, and his muscular strength became a proverb in the army. More than once he amused himself In the riding school by passing under a beam, grasping it with his rms and lifting his horse between his legs. I have seen him do it, and I recollect my childish amusement when 1 saw him carry two men standing upon his bent knee and hop across the room with there two men on him. I taw him once In a rage take a branch rf considerable toughness in both his hands and break it between them by turning one hand to the right and the other to the left. A few years later the gallant hussar was a brigadier general and performing fents of valor which earned him the title of "the Horatius Codes of the Tyrol." Best of all we like the sou's description of Horatius' storming of Mout Ceu is: The climliers reached the plateau. Although it was a dark night, the long line of soldiers, clothed iu blue uniforms, could have leeu perceived outlined narainst the snow from the fort. 'lut my father had foreseen this contingency; each man had a cotton cap aud a shirt rolled up In his kuaptuick. This was the ordinary dress my father adopted at night when he hunted chamois. They reached the foot of the palisades without having roused a single challenge. The men lxg:in climbing the palisades as soon as they reached them; but. thanks to my father's herculean strength, he thought of a better j'.nd quieter way namely, to take each man by the seat of his trousers and tho collar of his coat and throw him over the palisades. The snow would break the fall and also deaden the noise. Surprised out of their sleep aud seeing the French soldiers in their midst without knowing how they had come there, the Piediuoutese hardly offered any resistance. There i- a uod. lively bill at the New Phillips this wf'k and the crowd that attended .Monday tiijdit .Aas ,,H(. of the: largest on the opening night in months, the capacity being exhausted. Much enthusiasm was shown over various of the numbers ami especially so over the work of Bailey, Cioiiiimt and Hailey, lOuropean novelty gymnasts. Keouble Sims, the thin cartoonist and comedian, and Harris ileauregarde and company, present ing a rural comedy sktch entitled, "A Country .Midge." Itailev. I'mumer and Bailey have some new fe'at tires in their gymnastic work, performing some hand feats of unusual dexterity. Sims, cartoonist and comedian, is a sig'it to behold, hut he is good as a cartoonists and also succeeds as a fun maker, lie has an electric nose that is a wonder. His cartoons are off-hand work that show him possessed of considerable talent. Harris Heauregarde and company have appeared at the Xew Phillips before and that their return is welcome was shown by the applause with which they were greeted. In ad ditiou the Campbells have a comedy singing, dancing and music turn, an illustrated song, The Heart You Lost in Maryland You'll Find in Tennessee" is given and the cameragraph shows two motion met tiros ' 'rake (;od C?re of the Babv" and "Athl-tic American Girls." both of much interest. The Indies will be presented with souvenirs at the Wednesday matinee. Three amateurs who have given in their names to appear Friday night are Rd King Jr., in a comedy sketch, and Madaline I.augel and Minnie Black, singers. Indications are that the week will be a record-breaker for business. "The Honeymooners." Oorgo M. Cohan is said to be at his very best in "The Honeymooners." which, comes to the Gennett next Saturday night. Of all the long list of Cohan successes "The Honeymooners" has the most brilliant record of It road way triumph, having run all summer at the Xew Amsterdam Theater to packed houses, with seats selling at two dollars each and not nearly enoug-h of them. Cohan wrote the piece for himself and crowded it with every excellence that lie knew. The result is said to be a dazziugly brilliant song show with twice as much music and singing as the average musical comedy and more plot and stronger situations than most out and out dramas. Cohan is the only living writer for the stage who has mastered the difficult art of combining music and drama in one piece, and in "The Honeymooners" he tells a story of life and love, politics, sport and mistaken identity in the Vermont town of Tigerville to the accompaniment of a score of rattling musical numbers that, go with a typical Cohan dash and swing. "The Yankee Doodle Boy. In "Bud Hicks, the Yankee Doodle Hoy," which comes to the Gennett for a one night's engagement. Feb. is. playgoers and music lovers have iu store a treat of comedy, music, drama ind song. The book and lyrics are hy Halton Powell, while Oario Portello has supplied the music for the ten big song hits. The production is an elaborate one. the company acceptable both as regards dramatic ami vocal ability, aud the electrical effects novel. "The Yankee Doodle Hoy" has been a big financial success and it is thought capacity business will prevail here. "A Pair of Country Kids." The above well known play will be at the Gennett on the night of Feb. 17. and to lovers of comedy this will be a treat. Hi and Trizie the "Kids" are a lively pair and keep things lively during the evening and are supported by a company of artists. Special scenery is carried and the play has a consistent plot and enough sensation to relieve the audience from being bored by too much comedy. Numerous specialties are introduced. "Our New Minister." February !0 is the date set for the return of IVnnian Thompson and Geo. W. river's "Our Xew Minister." which comes back ;o the Gennett. in response to a popular demand. Rarely if ever did a piay catch the popular fancy as did this latest production of the authors of "The Old Homestead", for since its presentation at the Gennett a few weeks ago. it has been greatly eommeuded. It is not very difficult therefore to foresee the business that "Our New Minister" win do on its return date. The same cast will appear. PROHIBITION CAN NEVER SUCCEED
Cardinal Gibbons Talks on National Issue. Xew Orleans. La., Feb. 11. Cardinal Gibbons, who is stopping here, in an interview on prohibition publisher! today, says: "I am persuaded that it is practically impossible to put prohibition into effect in any large community and the be.-t means therefore to promote temperance is to limit the number of solootis by high license. I would be in favor of inflicting severe punishment on ih" proprietors of saloons who violated the law in the first instance, and in the second violation I would withdraw the license altogi-1 lit r. "In the country places I would su;'pest local option as an excellent means for the repression of intemperance if in the judgment of the majority of voters the sale of liquor should be entirely eliminated. "Laws like prohibition that are certain to be violated had best not be made, for iner.ssant violation draws down upon them disrespect." THE PE0PLEARE AROUSED. They No Longer Doubt Testimonials Are Useless. The Roof Juice people came to Richmond to prove the reports that were circulating over the country in relation to the many remarkable cures the great remedy was making. Hundreds of people that heard of the remedy, crowded into -V G. Luken's Drug store aud bought some of it and after taking it a short while many returned for more and urged their friends to iry it. Many local testimonials were published in this paper until it became useless as so many of this city know of many cures il has made and is making. It has certainly proved to be the greatest remedy known for the stomach, liver, kidneys and blood. It is remarkable Hie way it heals the stomach and bowels and gives .strength to the liver and kidneys. Out of all of the hundreds that gave the remedy a fair trial at this point, not a single one has been heard to condemn it. but. on the contrary many who suffered for years with indigestion, chronic constipation, rheumatism and various kidney complaints, after taking a fewbottles of the Juice claim a positive cure. So the great remedy does not merely patch. IT (TIIKS, Root Juice is sold at A. G. Luken's drug store for $1 a bottle, six bottles for '. Ambroise Fare, a barber surgeon of the sixteenth century, tells in his notes how Jn 1537 he went to the long wars to get practice in surgery. He invented some new processes, particularly in the treatment of amputated limbs. l.'p to Fare's time the most barbarous means had beeu used to stop the bleeding. In his own words: "So soon as the limb was removed the surgeons would nse many cauteries to stop the Cow of blood, a thin? very horrible and cruel In the mere telliug. And truly of six thus cruelly treated scarce two ever escaped, and even these were long ill. and the wounds thus burned were slow to heal, because the burning caused such vehement pains that they fell into fever, convulsions and other mortal accidents. In most of them, moreover, when the scar fell off there came fresh bleeding, which must again be stanched with the cauteries. So that for many healing was impossible, and they had nn ulcer to the end of their lives, which prevented them from having an artificial limb." The idea of abolisMne such eruclty by usins the ligature occurred to Tara in one of his war journeys, and his success vent beyond his own expectations. His other discovery was made within a few hours of his joining tho army. It was believed by the surgeons t the day that there was poison ia a gunshot wound, and one of the accepted authorities insisted that they must be cauterized "with oil of elders scalding hot. mixed with a little treacle." The pain was intolerable. It happened that at his first treatment of gunshot wounds Fare's oil ran short, and he used instead "a digestive made of the yolks of efc&s, oil of roses and turpentine." To his surprise he found nest morning that the patients he had thus treated were In better condition thau the others. 7.48 S24 IVIAIN POLICEMAN ON TRIAL FOR VICIOUS MURDER Frankfort Officer Slayed Daughter's Lover. His Frankfort. Ind.. Feb. 11. The trial of Police Officer Benjamin Martin on the charge of killing Koscoe Douglass j last October, began in Circuit court j jesterday. Today the court room was unable to accommodate the 1 throngs of people who desired to hear the evidence and the statements ot the attorneys. The alleged crime for which Martin is on trial was committed on the night of Oct. :!. near the home of Martin, where Douglass, according to his dying statement, had gone to make a social call im .Miss Pearl Martin, laughter of the policeman-defendant. Douglass was fired upon by Martin, it is charged, and the bullet passed entirely through his abdomen, from the i effects of which he died the next day. ! The state produced the statement made by Martin shortly after his arrest, in which he admitted that he fired two shots when he discovered Douglass, as he supposed, about to break into his house, asserting, however, that he shot simply to frighten him and did not shoot to kill, and lhat the bullet must have glanced from the cement sidewalk and inflicted the death wound. The dying statement of Douglass, which was admitted in evidence, stated that he was at Martin's house by previous appointment with the prisoner's daughter. The statement was made by Douglass a short time affv he was taken to the Farmers' hospital. In his statement for the defense. Attorney Holnian fiercely attacked the character of the dead man. He based his argument on the burglary theory. PROSPEROUS MILLER. Milton. Ind.. Fel. 11 The Milton I river roller flour mills, under the pro-; prietorship of J. Y. Hnunfield, are ' prospering finely.
