It in at least gratifying to find that our republican council will not descend to the level of playing "peanut" politics. Council's determination to avoid a deadlock and accept C. V. Merrill as city clerk, is done in the right spirit the spirit of sacrificing Its feelings as a republican body in accepting a democratic appointee, in order that the business of our city government may proceed without a hitch and with all despatch. Mayor 6chlllinger has not gained prestige in the eyes of the citizens of Richmond ty his appointment. Mr. Merrill already held a good position as president of the board of public works. But to advance him, a democrat, to the office Just vacated by a republican who was elected to that office by the usual overwhelming republican majority In this city, was, to say the least, partisan politics of the rankest kind. This is especially true when it is considered that Mayor Schillinger, in the eyes of a great many people lias always been regarded as a kind of fusion mayor. That he was elected by republican voters desirous of rebuking end removing from office the late regime, goes without saying. In view of this fact, therefore, it would have been no more than 'right, considering the real source of the power that elected him, if tho mayor had for the once dropped consideration of partisan politics and appointed a republican to fill the vacancy created by another republican. From all accounts, C. V. Morse, the New York banker, is not the only one who Is "at sea." His creditors who are attempting to straighten out hid affairs are equally bo. Milton, at least is glad it hasn't the automatic telephone service when it comes to a question of warning the community of the attempts of bank robbers. The Thaw family is leaving Pittsburg for good and there Is one member of that family who would like to leave Matteawan for good, too. And Kentucky is still balloting for a United States senator. Bryan's magic must have failed. TO THE REPUBLICANS OF WAYNE COUNTY. Tho duties of tho recorder's office have prevented my making us thorough personal canvass of the city and county as I had desired, therefore I can only appeal to you through the press. The question has frequently been asked me as to what the salary of tho recorder is as compared with the sal aries of the several other county off i- j cers. The salary of the recorder Is fixed by law at $2000 per year, providing the receipts from fees amount to that sum, and if the fees exceed that lum, 30 per cent of the excess. He pays the wages of his help out of his salary, as do all the other officers out of their salaries. The treasurer receives $5000 a year, auditor $4550, clerk $3700 and sheriff $3200. That there is an unjust discrimination In the law, is plain, when advised that the duties and responsibilities of the recorder are as great and of as vital importance as any of the others, while the election and help expenses are much the same. Being the only candidate for recorder, who Is an ex-soldier of the civil w ar. having enlisted at the first call in 1S61, at the age of 16 years in the Eighth Indiana infantry, and later in the Fifty-fourth Indiana, also being experienced in the duties of the office is why I ask your favorable consideration and support of my candidacy for county recorder, which favor if granted I will most certainly ever appreciate. Yours respectfully, FRANG C. MOSBAUGIL TO ATTEND FUNERAL. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Kuth went to Eaton. O., today to attend tie funeral of Mr. M. S. Morton. Mr. Morton was a brother-in-law of Mr. Kuth. Street railway employes In New York city have not much encouragement in the way of promotion. Records of t'u companies show that only three men out of each fifty have any chance for promotion, and even then the new jobs are but little better paying than tho old ones. MASONIC CALENDAR. SQUARE DEAL IS MOTTO OF REVIVAL

Evangelists Hobson and Small Displayed "a "targe Banner at Grace Church. LEAN CLUB" IS ORGANIZED A GREAT NUMBER ARE WILLING TO BECOME MEMBERS A BIG MEN'S MASS MEETING IS BEING PLANNED. A large banner was prominently displayed last night at Grace church, where the Methodist revival is now in progress, bearing the motto of the campaign, "A Square Deal." Evangellst Hobson said that a prominent , business man remarked, "If the church will put up that motto, I'll join the church." The evangelists took him at his word literally and here is the motto. We ask for "A Square Deal" for self, for fellow men and God. The music was again featured by whistling and humming and the large audience showed their approval by heartily supporting every suggestion made by Mr. A. A. Small, who conducts the preliminary service. Another dub was organized last night, a "Can" club. Evidently a great many were willing to be initiated. "Oo not say, 'I Can't' " said Hobson. "Say I Can." Phil. 4, 33: "I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me." Do not criticise, do not oppose, do not whine, do not growl. It is so delightful to have a religion that will not sour in hot or cold weather." The discourse was on 'Tractical Christianity." "I like a christian who Mill last all the week through; who is true on Monday, who is up and doing on Tuesday, who endures on Wednesday, who is sustained on Thursday, who is alive on Friday, who is satisfactory on Saturday and who is saved on Sunday." The text was Acts, "., 7, "And he took him by tho right hand lifted him up." Here is a work for all to do. All have influence. The Wooden Indian in front of the cigar store has influence and the man "smokes up." I don't bee why it takes so much more smoke to j "cure" men than women. A man i sang "One More Day's Work for Jesus" in a room where gambling was going on and the players Immediately threw down their cards. I count not as my friend the man who speaks ; against my Lord and Christ. Some- i time it will be all important what God j thinks of me. One favorable word from Christ outweighs all that can bo found in the Blue book. Blue blood and black blood does not save, but the blood of the covenant. Let a man rerepent and believe, and immediately will salvation be his. The text suggests accountability, adaptability and possibility. The Lord have mercy on a church member who can't do anything. It is a luxury, a positive joy to win a soul to Christ. How many souls did the 1,000 church members of Grace and First church win last year to Christ?" There were four conversions last night and the meeting continued to ten o'clock. Services tonight at 7:SO. A great men's meeting is being planned for Sunday afternoon. APPARENT DISCRIMINATION "With one more city letter car rier, said Postmaster Hpekenuter, we could give all patrons living on the outskirts of the city the best service possible in this city. As it is at present we have but fourteen carriers, wagon and footmen, to cover the en tire city, and as tho result, there are many nooks and corners which it is impossible to reach." From all appearances it seems that Uncle Sam is giving Richmond a raw deal on the matter of letter carriers for there are hundreds of people who do not get any service other than that by rural route, although they live inside the city limits or just on the outskirts. Muncie and Anderson both aro allowed sufficient number of carriers as aro many other cities in Indiana of Richmond's size. Postmaster Spekenhicr as well as many others residing in Richmond, ere Inclined to believe that the increase in salary granted to all postoffice employes last cummer, has made the department officials iu Washington just a wee bit careful of the public funds, and that this condition will prevail until the affairs of the department are once more adjusted and the committee which is working to shape the affairs of tho postoffice department so that they will be put on a paying basis, has completed its work. Until then, Richmond people living on the outskirts of town, can hope for no relief. By the addition of the fifteenth man to the local carrier force, another a footman. A Trade Hygienic Institute is to be established in Frankfort. Germany, abere all matters pertaining to the health and protection of German factory operatives and the working class in general is to be studied. Many monarchs are using English in Intercourse with one another. The Czar of Russia, for example, speaks English better than German, and the German emperor speaks English better than French. So it is natural that the two sovereigns should, as they do, correspond in English. Boston Globe,

Superintendent of State Hospital Gives Out This Information. DEPENDS UPON SANltY. AS SOON AS THAW RECOVERS FROM EXCITEMENT OF TRIAL, OBSERVATIONS WILL BE MADE TO THIS END. New York, Feb. 7 Thaw did real work today, with the permission of the superintendent of the Matteawan asylum. He shoveled snow off the walks for two hours. Matteawan, N. Y., Feb. 7. Dr. Lamb, superintendent of the State Hospital for the Criminal Insane, s-aid today that if after lit) days or so it i.s his belief that Harry K. Thaw i; sane, it will bo within the p-ovince of "..he hospital authorities to so certify to ilia court and recommend ais release. A commission in lunacy or other proceedings would not bo necessary, he declared. The physicians at the institution are not making observations or r iaw as yet, as they feel that ho has not recovered from the excitement caused by his recent trial for the murder of Stan ford White. He is considered a model prisoner by the physicians, and on account of his good behavior nas been allowed certain special privileges. Dr. Britton D. Evans, the alienist, and A. Russell Peabody, of counsel for Thaw, visited the patient. Before seeing Thaw the visitors had a half hour conference with Dr. Lamb. ')r. Eans said he did not come lo Mutti -await to make an examination of Thaw, but merely because the patient appeared to be cheered up by his visits. That there is friction among Thaw's counsel over the question whether an attempt to have him released from the asylum shall or shall not be made is denied; and it is stated that Evelyn N'esbit Thaw, wife of the alien, has become reconciled to Thaw remaining in the hospital for th3 present. It is said also that it is unlikely that the members of the Thaw family will visit him frequently at Matteawan. Thaw has requested that neither his wife nor his mother visit him while he is at Matteawan. It has been practically decided tVat there is no way under the law by which Thaw can be confined in a private sanitarium instead of the Matt-u-wan institution, and his lawyers and family are said to have agned that it would be unwise to ask for his release , now. Martin W. Littleton, who con ducted Thaw's defense in court, left yesterday for a. six weeks' vacation in Florida, and it is posslh'e that no move will be made in the caso before his return. Reports from Albany that Thaw's other lawyers would apply to Dr. Fer ries, of the state lunacy commission. in the hope of inducing that official to cider his transfer to sora? other insti tution were ridiculed by boih Dan O'Reilly and A. Russell Peaboty. Superintendent of Prisons Collins, at Albany, declared he would soo Thw at Matteawan today, but had no intention of investigating the cha-ge3 that h has been ill treated there. WANTED POLICE TO MOVE ASHES Sergeant McManus Searched For Help. Sergeant Dan McManus was on the lookout for a wheelbarrow this morning, and also wanted an assistant, a job which he offered the newspaper boys, but which they declined with hurried thanks. The cause of the trouble was a request from some resident of South Fifteenth street to the police to come down and remove some ashes. Dan finally succeeded in shifting the job to other shoulders.
